Yeah when the missile rocket motor fires up to chase its target. Yup
One of the critical differences between the AIM-120D and Meteor is that no escape zone. As the Meteor uses ramjets at cruise flight it is burning less fuel than an AMRAAM at Mach 4 so its no escape zone is much expanded saving fuel for interception phase where it needs power to turn on a maneuvering target and or more speed to catch up to it.

But If my knowledge serves me right, AIM120D can be fired from a range of 100Km ? However maybe the effective hitting range is 40Km, whatever the case may be, IAF pilots who got engaged by AIM120D might now have a way to counter it as they've experienced several lock on's (4 to 5 on just the SU30 MKI! shocker indeed). Maybe the PAF wanted to down our crown jewel as correctly pointed in the article.

Plus as per post by Livefistdefennce ... the PAF Awacs was flying too, any move by SU30s could've been painted.
Pakis have AIM 120 C-5. When did they get D version?

Correction *AIM120C Pak doesn't have AIM120D in their arsenal.

One thing I would like to share How Balakot strike took place. This is from one of my friend who is in Air Force and was posted on jaisalmer Border on that Day.

Normally they have to report at 5 AM, but on that day they were ask to report at 3 AM. They were not told about any operation. It was a normal drill they were told. But later they were told about the operation. Around 4-5 mig 21 crossed the LOC from Jaisalmer and some fighter jets from Gujarat side. So PAF attenation was on this side. Then Jaguars and SU 30 fly from Halwara and entered from J&K side and complete the operation. Operation was completed on three location but main was on Balakot.

About F16, Wig cmndr Abhinandan and another mig 21 were on CAP at that time . He Chased one of F16. He was alerted that he is crossing LOC. "Abort Mission, Abort Mission" was the command to him but by that time he was directly behind F16 and one F16 was behind him, so it was a "Sandwich" situation one Mig 21 between 2 F16. He locked on F16 and Boom.

The LOC Air Battle on February 27th

Three matters are clear from this air battle - 1). Pakistan came to equalize the Balkote score but failed, 2). F-16s were used, but these stayed on their sides and used long range AMRAAM missiles to blast down a SU-30mk1 but failed again, 3). The Pakistani fighters a whole cluster of them could shoot only a lonely MIG-21, which strayed on their side of the LOC. In the process lost a F-16.

Pakistan should be screaming that they could not achieve any of the objectives in this air action. They did shoot their Denel built glide bombs, but from too far, hence the bomb did hit its intended location, but accuracy was so horrendous that it fell a thousand meters away. That is the danger in shooting glide bombs from that far away that the accuracy goes to hell. Moreover, atmospheric conditions do impact the flight of the bomb. A small change would make a huge difference and the bomb may not reach the intended target. That is what happened in the case of hitting the Nowshera brigade headquarters.

A clever trick was played by the PAF to snare the Su-30Mk1 into the fight. The latter had to remain out of range of 100 km beyond visual range US made AMRAAM missiles loaded on F-16 planes. To goad the Indian SU-30s into action, they fired a few AMRAAM missiles at them, which the clever Indian pilots avoided with Chaffe and blocking them completely. The missiles ran out of fuel and fell to the earth, which the Indian Army picked them up and made an issue with the Americans. This was an expensive trial for PAF as each missile costs $3 million. Their denials were of no avail, as India had the evidence to show it.

There were 24 Pakistani fighters which came for a combat. This is a large armada and I would understand that they came for a big score but failed. They relied on too much on technology to do the job without crossing the LOC. They let the bombs from too far and these fell inaccurately. Had they come a bit closer, the results would be different. Besides, they let their AMRAAM missiles a bit early, without a clear radar lock on the target hence these were ineffective. In the process another Indian MIG-21 gave a chase and had a lock on F-16 and fired. In the target chase, he lost his bearing and crossed the LOC. Now he lost all his communications and became an easy target for a Pakistani fighter. The Russian short range Russian missile brought the F-16 down, but he himself became the hunted. He was quickly shot down.

In those five minutes of melee, three parachutes opened, although the Pakistanis deny it but is their usual habit. Two parachutes were Pakistanis and one was Indian. By all accounts you can infer that the F-16 was a trainer. The fate of the one Pakistani pilot was sealed by the villagers in the area. He died at their hands. The Indian pilot pilot was about to suffer the same fate, but his action to ward off the villagers in commendable.

This battle lowered the Pakistani morale and they were prepared to de-escalate very quickly.

If any one find any video of encounter please post it and marked to me.

Has anyone established the location/direction of the cameraman? If this is known we can proximate if any of the wreckage fell in India or if all fell inside Pakistan based on where the camera is pointed.

It's interesting that there are several videos that show an aircraft(s) descending rapidly, one leaves a smoke trail while the other does not. This indicates two aircraft went down. Of course it could just be camera angles, lighting and camera quality which gives an illusion.

After Balakot, IAF plans to equip Mirage 2000 aircraft with long-range Meteor missiles
The 27 February dogfight showed Indian aircraft were outranged by Pakistan Air Force in aerial combat.

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force is keenly considering arming the Mirage 2000 aircraft with potent long-range Meteor missiles as the 27 February dogfight highlighted that Indian aircraft were outranged by Pakistan Air Force in aerial combat.

With the Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile Meteor, the balance will once again tilt in India’s favour the way it happened during the Kargil war in 1999 when the Pakistan Air Force did not dare to close in because India had better air-to-air missiles.

On 27 February, at the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets, armed with AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, or AMRAAM, had targeted India’s frontline fighter aircraft Su-30 MKI.

The Indian fighters, armed with R-73 and R-77 air-to-air missiles, could not target the F-16s because they were outranged as the F-16s were fired from a distance of about 45 km from the LoC.

It is only when a Mig-21 Bison, flown by Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, chased an intruding Pakistani fighter jet across the LoC that it got a lock on and shot it down.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had later said that if the IAF had Rafale fighter jets, then the outcome would have been different.

Top IAF officials told ThePrint that it indeed would have been the case.

“Rafale armed with Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile Meteor would have been a huge deterrent as no Pakistani aircraft would have dared to come close by at least 100 km,” an official said.

The IAF, which is upgrading three squadrons of Mirage 2000s, is now keenly thinking about integrating the Meteor on them.

“The Meteor on the Mirage is something which we are keenly looking into. When the upgrade deal was signed with Dassault Aviation for the Mirages, the Meteor was still in the developing phase. And hence this would be a fresh deal. We are looking into the cost-effectiveness and other issues,” a top IAF source told ThePrint.

The Air Force is looking at a combination of BrahMos NG, Israeli Derby, Meteor, indigenous Astra, R-73 and R-77 to gain aerial superiority.

“There is no class of missiles in Pakistan and China that can match the Meteor at this point of time. However, China is investing heavily on indigenous cruise missiles and long-range missiles. Any missile that China will make will eventually get into the hands of Pakistan,” another IAF source said.

The Indian Air Force had the upper hand during the Kargil war because Pakistan did not have a BVR, but India did. However, since then, they have acquired the AMRAAM, which tilted the balance in their favour.

IAF’s plan for Meteor on Su-30 MKI and Tejas goes kaput
The IAF’s initial plan to equip the Su-30 MKI and the Tejas with Meteor has gone kaput because the European firm, MBDA, refused to integrate them.

The MBDA told the IAF that it cannot integrate the missile, with a range of over 120 km and a no-escape zone of 60 km, on a Russian platform or the Tejas, which uses Israeli radar.

However, following heavy negotiations between the European firm and the IAF, the MBDA has agreed to reconsider once indigenous AESA radar, manufactured by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is installed on board the Tejas Mark 1A or Mark II

I don't think that India is planing any war with Pak as of now.... We are not prepared for full fledged war... availability of our fighters are very low right now. Though Sukhoi 30 MKI is very capable fighter and now I believe that it was not shot down by PAF but 27th Feb has shown its disadvantages in front of F-16... Its electronically inferior to F-16 and larger RCS makes it further vulnerable to F-16.... R-77 too is no match to AMARAAM..... M2K we have in very smaller nos. Fulcrums are too not that reliable..... Rafales coming are in very less nos.... Maybe if we had S-400 operational today then we could have engaged PAF over there skies itself. But that too not coming before 2020.... So all in all we cannot only depend on Flanker..... Army and Navy are capable but to win wars decisive AIR POWER is must....
