Advanced BrahMos successfully test-fired on hidden land targets

The weight of a prospective rocket will be 1.5 tons and its length will be about six metres. It will be designed for Su-30MKI and MiG-29 fighter planes. However, it will be also fit for other operational combat aircraft or those set to be adopted by the Air Force of India, including Rafale and Mirage-2000 aircraft.

re: New BrahMos Cruise Missile: Range 500kms

NEW DELHI: Indo-Russian joint venture firm BrahMos Aerospace today said it is developing a smaller version of the 290-km supersonic cruise missile for enabling its deployment on submarines and smaller fighter aircraft such as MiG 29K. Addressing a gathering while launching his book 'The Path Unexplored', BrahMos Aerospace chief A Sivathanu Pillai said the firm was preparing for the test- firing of the air- launched version of the missile by the end of this year. "The BrahMos-Mini would be developed by reducing the size of the booster and the engine and reducing its weight. The missile would then be ready for deployment on submarines and smaller fighter aircraft," he said. Pillai, who has been the BrahMos chief for the last 15 years, said the joint venture is working towards getting the missile fitted on the planned Indo-Russian Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft and smaller warplanes such as the MiG 29K of the Navy. He said modifications are being done by HAL on the Su-30MKI aircraft for firing of the air- launched version of the missile and significant progress has been made in developing its launcher and other related systems. Pillai said despite a ban in Russia on induction of any weapon system produced outside the country, President Vladimir Putin was working towards ensuring that the BrahMos missiles are inducted into the Russian forces. Asked if banning import of weapon systems would help India to develop its own systems, he said such a mechanism can help the country as Indian scientists have developed several systems on their own during the era of restrictions. He said the BrahMos Aerospace was set up with a capital of USD 300 million and today it has orders worth over USD 6 billion for supplying systems to all the three Services.

NEW DELHI: The Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace is ready to test by this year end a smaller version of its 290-km eponymous supersonic cruise missile for deployment on combat aircraft and submarines.
BrahMos chief A Sivathanu Pillai also supported the idea of the country relying on its own weapons and systems to meet the needs of its armed forces, saying that Indian defence scientists and production agencies have proved their capabilities in this regard. At a function here to release a book on BrahMos he has penned, Pillai said the Indo-Russian firm was preparing for the trials of the BrahMos mini-missile on a combat aircraft by December. "The BrahMos-Mini would be developed by reducing the size of the booster and engine and reducing its weight. The missile will then be ready for deployment on submarines and smaller fighter aircraft," he said. Pillai, who has had a 15-year stint as BrahMos chief, said the company is working towards getting the missile fitted on the planned Indo-Russian Fifth- Generation Fighter Aircraft and smaller warplanes such as the MiG 29K of the Navy. BrahMos missile may be exported South-East Asian, Latin American nations

New Delhi: In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to export defence hardware, supersonic
cruise missile manufacturer BrahMos Aerospace has said that South-East Asian and Latin American countries have shown interest in acquiring the 290-km range weapon system and it is possible to export the missile to certain friendly nations.

"Several South-East-Asian and Latin American countries want the BrahMos, expressed interest in it, particularly for the naval and coastal defence versions. A definite list of such countries already exists. We are progressing with our marketing strategy for exporting BrahMos to certain nations, subject to clearance from both Indian and Russian governments," BrahMos Aerospace CEO Sudhir Kumar Mishra said.

"We expect several export contracts to be signed with nations friendly to both India and Russia in the near future," he told PTI in an interview.

Mishra declined to name the countries that have shown interest in the missile system but Defence Ministry sources said Vietnam and Indonesia in South East Asia and Venezuela in Latin America have expressed willingness to procure the missile.

Earlier, DRDO chief Avinash Chander had also expressed interest in exporting defence weapons to friendly countries.

DRDO and Russian NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) are partners in BrahMos joint venture.

The inter-governmental agreement between India and Russia for development of BrahMos missile also stipulates use of this advanced system to be inducted into the Indian and Russian armed forces as well as export to friendly countries.

Recently, the Prime Minister had stated that India should now move towards self-reliance in producing military weapons and systems and also look for exporting them to the friendly nations.

Asked about his immediate plans for the missile firm, Mishra said it will be indigenising missile development in India, capacity building for larger production, meeting the production orders ahead of schedule to ensure delivery of missiles on time and ensuring different versions of BrahMos missiles to meet the aspirations and requirements of the defence force including Army, Navy and Air Force.

Mishra said the Indian contribution has so far been only for the inertial navigation guidance system and fire control system. "We have to focus on indigenously realising the engine and seeker for the BrahMos missile," he added.

Re: New BrahMos Cruise Missile: Range 500kms

this missile would be absolutely awesome and untouchable if it also had at least the range of tomahawk cruise missile (2,500km) or AGM-129 ACM (3,700km).

The Russians are building such weapons for their bombers, hypersonic ones. We don't have a need for this today. Our targets are quite close. We have greater focus on penetration of defenses than just obscene range.

We don't have an inter-continental enemy.

BrahMos-A wind tunnel test completed, many firsts

August 19, 2014: The Bangalore-based National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) has carried out crucial drop tests of the air-launched BrahMos-A from a Su-30MKI fighter model in a 1.5 m Low Speed Wind Tunnel to "estimate the actual trajectory of the missile at different conditions of the aircraft in a record time". NAL says it has also successfully conducted the captive and isolated strain gauge tests to generate highly accurate data needed for the BrahMos-A in Tri-sonic wind tunnels. According to NAL, dynamic store separation trials in a wind tunnel have been successfully conducted for the first time in the country. Ground trials of the Su-30MKI modified for the BrahMos mission will commence shortly at Nashik. If executed successfully, the BrahMos will be test-fired from a Su-30MKI in the firing ranges of the Thar Desert by early next year. NAL is also standing by to provide wind tunnel proof services on the BrahMos-Mini and BrahMos-II, which has already begun.

Re: New BrahMos Cruise Missile: Range 500kms

August 19, 2014: With the BrahMos Block II missile proving itself well during trials in multiple engagement modes, the focus has shifted to the next variants, with the incoming BrahMos CEO S.K. Mishra signalling that one of his priorities will be the BrahMos-M (now, officially the BrahMos-Mini), a compact, but fully capable version of the original cruise missile. Planned for operational induction by 2017, the BrahMos-M could find applications across dimensions, including air launch. It is anticipated that a tripartite agreement between NPO Mashinostroyenia, BrahMos Aerospace and DRDO will be finalised, if not signed, when Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives on an official visit to Delhi in December this year. "My priorities will be indenisation of missile development in India, capacity building for larger production, meeting production orders ahead of schedule," says Mr Mishra. On his watch, BrahMos Corp. will also conduct the first 'demonstration launches' of the BrahMos-A from a Su-30MKI early next year, followed by further tests of the underwater launched BrahMos, being developed for the P75I submarine line. The focus also shifts qualitatively now to the hypersonic BrahMos-II. Mishra's other big priority will be to move BrahMos into the export regime, so far throttled by foreign policy concerns.

Enemies Stand Helpless Against BrahMos Missile

August 20 (RIA Novosti) - A supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, developed jointly by Russia and India, leaves any enemy helpless as no effective protection against the BrahMos has been created so far, Sudhir Mishra, the new head of the BrahMos Aerospace Corporation told Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

"Supersonic speed is the BrahMos' major advantage. An enemy has yet no effective protection against such missiles. After the missile is launched, all the enemy can do is run. In fact, he has even no time to escape. That is why this is a very promising weapon. And it has no alternatives in the world so far," Mishra said in an interview Tuesday adding that "even if any other country succeeds one day in creating missiles with similar characteristics, we will be a way ahead already."

The BrahMos Aerospace chief said also that a number of countries are currently interested in the project, which may pave the way for the BrahMos' exports in the future.
"It will be possible to export the BrahMos only to friendly nations, determined by the governments of India and Russia. Currently, many states are interested in our missiles. As soon as our governments decide on where to export we will be ready for deliveries," Mishra stressed.

The Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace was founded in 1998 by the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization and Russian rocket design bureau of Machine Building. The venture was named after two rivers, the Brahmaputra in India and Russia's Moskva.

The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 kilometers (180 miles) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds). It can effectively engage targets from an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the US-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

They have never heard of Aster or Camm missiles which are designed to kill fast flying supersonic cruise missiles.
