BrahMos missile to do near vertical dive in a year

The Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, whose Block-III variant has perfected a surgical strike capability, is set to further expand its target engagement envelope by attaining a 'near vertical dive capability' to shock the enemy hidden behind mountains.
The Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, whose Block-III variant has perfected a surgical strike capability, is set to further expand its target engagement envelope by attaining a 'near vertical dive capability' to shock the enemy hidden behind mountains.

"We want to demonstrate a 'near vertical dive and surround' capability to take the enemy by surprise. While radars do not have 360 degree coverage in the mountains, we would like to show the missile taking a turn in the horizontal axis and decimating the target around the hill. We hope to do this in a year's time," Sudhir Mishra, chief executive officer and managing director of the company, told The Hindu.

The capability, he said, would allow the Army to inventively approach their operational plans.

On the air version of the universal missile now under development, Mr. Mishra said a dummy BrahMos would be test-dropped from a modified Su-30 MKI fighter early next year. By March, the actual missile would be test-fired from the aircraft.

The BrahMos-II, the planned hypersonic version of the missile, was at a very nascent stage of design, owing to the technological challenges involved in its development. "A preliminary design is being done in the lab and the complete missile may take nearly five years to fructify. But we are at it, nevertheless," said Mr. Mishra. "It is a complex thing to develop, given the fact that as we overshoot the sound of speed, a lot of aerodynamic changes take place. We need new material, as stability and heat-resistance of the missile at these speeds are extremely important. How the propellant behaves at these speeds is a critical question. The avionics has to be properly secured to withstand high temperatures. Data-linking is another key area." Mr. Mishra said the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the BrahMos Aerospace had together invested some $50 million for the development.

Mr. Mishra said while a few friendly nations in the 'distant neighbourhood' had been shortlisted for sale of the potent missile, it was up to the Russian and Indian governments to take a call on the export of BrahMos. "It can happen anytime soon as the new government has made its intent to export weapons clear."

Mr. Mishra said Russia, too, would add the missile to its naval inventory when it inducted a new ship.

Re: New BrahMos Cruise Missile: Range 500kms

The governments of India and Russia have agreed that BrahMos missile will be exported to a list of mutually agreeable countries for defensive purposes. There is also a negative list to which exports are barred. The missile has been showcased in several countries to apprise the potential customers of its capabilities. "If any country approaches us we will look into it on a case by case basis. BrahMos Aerospace has the production capacity, game plan and skilled labour to supply. I would like to state that we are ready and waiting. It is for the government of India to decide", Sudhir Mishra, CEO and MD of BrahMos Corporation said on Wednesday. It has been learnt that three submarine manufacturers Amur (Russia), HDW (Germany) and Navantia (Spain) have approached BA for installing BrahMos on the new Project- 75I submarines should they bag the contract. The manufacturers have all assured that BrahMos can be installed on their submarines without affecting the quality of the missile or the submarine. Land attack capability is one of the requirements of the Project 75I submarines. Asked about the deliverables for the next five to seven years, Mr. Mishra said, "We are concentrating all energies on the air launched variant to deliver it on schedule. Second is advanced land variants for the Army. We have recently demonstrated a steep dive capability at 65 degree to identify targets in a clutter. Next we are working on a near vertical and surround capability for use in the mountains."

Domestic Firm May Build Parts For BrahMos Missile

India's Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) may bag the order to manufacture components for the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos. The country's biggest integrated engineering complex is in the final round of talks with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is likely to bag the order early this year, said B K Sharma, general manager (marketing) on Monday. HEC will build the aluminium chassis of the 10m-long supersonic cruise missile that can strike from air, sea and land to hit a target over 290km away. The company is also planning to build BrahMos's engine components at its sprawling facility on the fringes of the capital, according to The Times of India. A joint aerospace programme between India and Russia, BrahMos is a supersonic stealth cruise missile that has a flight altitude of 15km and can carry a payload of 300kg, including a nuclear warhead. The missile was inducted into the Indian Navy and Army in 2006 and is undergoing trials for its introduction in the Air Force. The advanced version of BrahMos, a hypersonic stealth cruise that can notch up the speed to Mach 7, is being development. The supersonic cruise missile's speed ranges between Mach 2.5 and Mach 2.8 and is around three- and-a-half times faster than the American subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

Re: Enemies Stand Helpless Against BrahMos Missile

They have never heard of Aster or Camm missiles which are designed to kill fast flying supersonic cruise missiles.
thats why they are making hypersonic missiles.

Aster or CAMM can challenge a CM max at 1.5-2 Mach. Not a CM which is doing 3 Mach along with terminal "S" maneuvers.

Re: Enemies Stand Helpless Against BrahMos Missile

Can some one tell me..

- how much one Brahmos missile cost ?

- Is this completely manufactured in India OR we still have some dependencies on Russia for critical items.

- Has Russia also Ordered some missiles or they were just interested in getting profit with this collaboration knowing well India will make them in large numbers

Bengaluru, Feb 14: India on Saturday successfully test-fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from Indian Navy's latest destroyer INS Kolkata. Sources said that the launch was flawless. "The missile met all its designed parameters and it was a treat to watch," a senior BrahMos official said. Indian Navy had commissioned INS Kolkata in August 2014. This is the first ship of this class, with two more ships in the pipeline. "All the three ships are equipped with vertical launched Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile System as the prime strike weapon," the official said. He said the Universal Vertical Launcher (UVLM) being used has a unique design, developed and patented by BrahMos Aerospace. The UVLM has the benefits of stealth and permits launching of the missile vertically in any direction. BrahMos chief Sudhir Mishra congratulated the BrahMos Team and Indian Navy on the successful mission. The air launch version of BrahMos is expected to be test-fired from a Sukhoi next month. India is also planning the air version of its subsonic cruise missile, Nirbhay.

ONEINDIA EXCLUSIVE: HYPERSONIC, NEXT-GEN MISSILES ON BRAHMOS' WISHLIST: MISHRA

OneIndia Exclusive: Hypersonic, next-gen missiles on BrahMos' wishlist: Mishra - Oneindia

BANGALORE: Aerospace scientists in Bengaluru and Moscow have quietly begun work on the hypersonic version of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos. "They have been breathing only hypersonic for some time now," BrahMos Aerospace CEO and Managing Director Sudhir Kumar Mishra told OneIndia during an exclusive interview.

He said ahead of India, the United States of America (X51), Russia (GLL-AP-02) and China (WU14) have already made some attempts in demonstrating unmanned scramjet demonstration flights, leading to their possible hypersonic flights in future. "May be in the next 7-12 years, we want to be the first country in the world to develop a hypersonic missile. We are confident," Mishra said.

He said the BrahMos Aerospace has indentified 13 focussed areas to undertake research and development to achieve hypersonic levels. "There are 14 research facilities in India now that can aid our hypersonic mission," he said.

To receive Sukhoi documents at Aero India

Mishra said that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will hand over the documents of the first Sukhoi fitted with the BrahMos air version.

"We have completed the electrical and mechanical integration of the missile with the Sukhoi. HAL did an exceptionally good job. I understand the second Sukhoi has been already handed over to HAL two days back for integrating another missile. The first flight-test from Sukhoi should happen in the next two months," Mishra said.

He said a replica of the BrahMos launcher made by its facility in Thiruvananthapuram will be on display at Aero India 2015.

BrahMos-NG will be a reality

Mishra said that both governments are keen to develop mini, next-generation BrahMos, being termed as BrahMos-NG.

"It is just an idea now. We want to work towards this dream. I believe in achieving small goals and moving ahead. I believe that BrahMos-NG will be a reality one day," Mishra said.

He said in future, five missiles (BrahMos-NG) could be fitted on to a Sukhoi. To a query, Mishra said the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) being planned by Aeronautical Development Agency will be capable of carrying the air version of BrahMos.

New BrahMos facility coming up in Rajashtan

Confirming the expansion plans of BrahMos to OneIndia, Mishra said that the new thought process mandates increase the integration and production capacity. "We need to develop the capacity for life extension. In addition, we need to give product support as well. A new facility is coming up in Plani (Rajasthan) which will act as a Product Support Centre," Mishra said.

BrahMos Aerospace is headquartered in New Delhi with an Integration Complex in Hyderabad and Nagpur. The BrahhMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd is the third wing situated in Kerala.

Lean, mean smart organisation best

Mishra, who took over as the BrahMos CEO in August 2014, said that he has set his 'specific goals' towards taking his team towards 'achieving challenging and exciting tasks' ahead.

"The autonomy BrahMos Aerospace enjoys needs be justified through an inspiring work culture linked to deliverables. I am keen to have transparency in all my areas of work. I am keen that BrahMos work partners (DRDO in India and NPOM in Russia) get the finest technologies available in the world today. The success of BrahMos is a result of the people-to-people relationship between India and Russia," the top missile scientist said.

When asked whether BrahMos would add more man power, the soft-spoken, to-the-point captain of captain of BrahMos said that he believed in the lean, mean and smart philosophy of work.
