Just to pass it on, it looks like a Tempest TD will get the go ahead.

With an FCAS demonstrator and a Tempest demonstrator coming from Europe, I imagine that a lot will be revealed about the technologies the Europeans are proposing for the two types. They might give a hint as to what could be in AMCA Mk2.

Quick check on lengths from different sources:
F-22 ~19m length
Tempest ~19m length
AMCA ~17.2m length
F-35 ~15.4m length

Tempest may turn out to be a different size in the end.

UK has defence reviews every few years. I think the latest one is looking for higher performance hardware but less personnel for RAF.

Going back 15 years or more, F-35 was intended to have operating costs roughly in line with F-16. Not what has happened, as far as I know. That may be one reason why UK decided to investigate developing a 5G+ fighter.

The reason uk is developing tempest is to protect domestic know how otherwise British aerospace industry will loose it's technical expertise and will be just a tier 2 vendor for us aerospace .

That requires massive investment into British r&d and that requires a massive program like tempest .
