a lot more changes are expected in the design... Exciting developments though..

This new model looks a bit like the Japanese 5th-gen concept except for the long nose.

The AMCA model is a paper tiger. AMCA feasibility project is yet to be completed, so the final model will not be out so quickly.

Heck even LCA Mk2 design is only the initial model considering the design stage is still not complete. Give it another year, maybe a bit more for the final model; if it is released for public consumption that is.

That was my observation too, looks like the boat nose and frill ducts did not do well in the wind tunnel! This one looks more like the Pak-Fa and it also looks more realistic and do-able.

It is not entirely true, prada. I know that the feasibility study and the model design will take at least till 2012 to finalize and this was officially mentioned in the report on AMCA. No doubt. But you have to see something logically as well. The model that has been shown to us right now, has been derived from the core model that we saw 3 years back in 2008 as well as a wind tunnel test model. Now what are the core features that this model and the previous model share?

-Serpentine air intakes,
-internal weapons bay,
-symmetric parallel edges,
-internal weapons bay,
-1/2 piece canopy,
-canted tails,
-AESA radar,
-powerful engine and
-as per IAF's wishlist a panoramic LED-touchscreen pilot-plane interface.

This is the ruling model of stealth pattern that the world has been following including Russians and now Chinese. No Star Trek shape has been designed or tested for stealth and ADA is the last agency I would expect to be testing some sort of innovative and risk-taking design sine IAF is running out of aircraft faster than it can induct and due to its through the roof and very unstable pattern of adding features for fighter jets, ADA would want to get a proven design (Raptor, JSF, PAK FA etc) into production ASAP rather than waste time on conceptual drawn designs, lest IAF changes requirements all over again (this is where I blame IAF for delays; they are like 5-year-old kids who want a new colored candy every time interval).

So don't expect the final model to be anything radically different from what is shown to us. Because this is the only shape that has been taken into a proven stealth platform (theoretically at least). Serpentine inlet-canted tail-internal bay combo is the final forumula of ADA. Period.

Heck even LCA Mk2 design is only the initial model considering the design stage is still not complete. Give it another year, maybe a bit more for the final model; if it is released for public consumption that is.
MK2 is already revealed. It is not going to be radically different except elongate the fuselage and make intakes larger for the GE 414 (Gripen's fuselage is also thing and long as MK2 is planned which is why it has a better effect on aerodynamics as compared to MK1). MK2 cannot be put into design for too long as IAF wants a GRIPEN type of fighter which can be updated easily and is cost-effective to fill in numbers with decent technology. MK2 gives them all that with the model revealed (I hope a single piece canopy is considered).

That is because this design is a proven design with raptor and JSF already established and ADA doesn't want to experiment with new styles especially with the lack-luster performance it has given till now and the fact that IAF is fed up of delays.

AMCA Roadmap revealed

The head of India's Aeronautical Development Agency yesterday revealed key details of the roadmap for development of the proposed indigenous medium combat aircraft (MCA) in an interview with Flight Daily News.

ADA will complete a feasibility study on the MCA by the end of 2011. The study will be submitted to the Indian government and air force, and discuss key aspects of the programme, says PS Subramanyam, programme director at the ADA.

The study will consider several areas: the number of MCA prototypes, prototype timelines, funding, and production schedules for the final aircraft.

"The MCA will be in flight trials by end of the decade, and it will be inducted by the middle of the next decade," says Subramanyam

Subramanyam also discussed how the MCA will fit into the Indian air force's future force structure. It will be a 20t aircraft with a 1,000km range, fitting between the 10t, 500km range of the Hindustan Aeronautics Tejas, and the 30t, 1,500km range of the fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA), an Indian variant of the developmental Sukhoi PAK FA.

Therefore, Subramanyam says, the MCA "does not clash" with the FGFA. He says the MCA will be comparable to the Lockheed Martin F-35, and the FGFA comparable to the F-22 Raptor.

The MCA will be a single seat fighter. A two seat version will be developed, but primarily as a trainer. A naval variant is not envisaged, but Subramanyam foresees a requirement for a 20t aircraft for India's future indigenous aircraft carriers. A naval variant of the Tejas was rolled out in mid-2010. It is likely to have its first flight this year.

In a recent interview with Flight Daily News, IAF Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik said the MCA will be a medium weight combat aircraft with low observable features and a payload capability of more than five tons. It will have swing role capability and "provide greater flexibility in the application of aerospace power".

The ADA has previously said the MCA will have "serpentine-shaped" air intakes, internal weapons bays, and advanced radomes to increase its stealth features. Radar-absorbing composites and paints will supplement the design.

It will be powered by two Kaveri engines optimized for low observable characteristics. The Kaveri, which has suffered considerable delays, is still in development, and will eventually replace General Electric engine in the Tejas.

Looking at the design...I seriously doubt the performance and lift characteristics of the aircraft...the wing is too small.
