Depends on their timeline.
Mk2 can effectively compete with most others. But Mk1/Mk1A will suffer badly on the range and payload aspects - even if offered at an attractive price point.
If Malaysian air force is anything like IAF then Mk2 stands a chance! Quite unlikely to happen though!
This article suggests that Malaysia is actually looking for a low-end fighter aircraft and NOT a very sophisticated one...

Many reasons- pressure from Amreekis for one, who would prefer to find a customer for F16s and they have the engine leverage over us.

Then if they are looking to quickly shore up their numbers, Gripen is available, Tejas will take a while to be inducted in big numbers before it's optimised for export.

Of course they can buy Bandars, but probably everyone knows the quality of that junk.

Moreover, RMAF are looking for a fighter-trainer aircraft, not sure how Tejas fits in with that, since it's not being actively used as a trainer in IAF at the moment.

For us, yes. For Malaysia, dunno.
Have you included development cost, infrastructure cost to manufacture the jets separate or have you included in per unit cost? It is meaningless to include development cost as part of per unit cost

I agree, these costs do not go towards calculating per unit cost, because for us it is an investment into the aeronautical/aerospace ecosystem. Buying F-16 or Gripen would be poisoning the shoots of this entire enterprise. Tejas for us is more than a plane. It's a promise and investment for the future.

Once the production is up and running and ready to export, it's difficult to say what the per unit costs would be.

Of course, you need to include the development cost specially for this plane as part of per unit cost, such as:
the usage of wind tunnel to test the plane's aerodynamic model;
the cost building prototypes;
the fuel cost of testing flights;
You don't need to include infrastructure cost, but you still need to include the cost of using these infrastructure.

But more importantly SP-12 is in.

45 Sqn, the flying daggers is growing strength to strength with the 12th SP in the line up. All goes well, the sqn will operate to its full strength before end of this financial year. However, there are lots of tasks are lined up for the squadron starting from the Aero India in Feb to the Malaysian airshow in March. We are sure, Tejas will touch the sky with all possible glories in the coming days. Wishing the team always, nothing but the best.

Eagerly waiting for Tejas second ballet with some new manoeuvers by our pilots in Lima. I wish we invest to make "Blue angels" or "Sarang" like team for Tejas.

We'll have to see who's participating.
If it's HAL, chances are they'll take the LSPs and if its IAF then of course the SPs.
Imo, it'll be HAL that's participating, so LSP just like in Bahrain.

I flight class is required, the F16 is out and Gripen C/D had a low unit cost, because of the high orders of the past, but they have re-start the production, which adds cost again. The cheapest offers will remain JF17 Block 2 and S. Koreas T50/FA50 combo, but the biggest question is what Malaysia can afford at all?

If Tejas will be offered, then in the FOC version, HAL needs extra orders and MK1A would only add more costs, when it can be available.

Estimated length= 6.1m (F) + 4.5m (C) + 3.3m (R) = 13.9m. Mk1 is 13.2m.

So MK2 is officially 0.7m longer than Mk1/Mk1A
What is interesting is this proves canards is confirmed on LCA mk2. See the CAD diagram.

Anyways no IRST ?
that will be a mistake if not installed.
