LCA Tejas Achieves Yet Another Milestone Towards FOC Certification

Tejas, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) successfully fired Derby Air-to-Air Beyond Visual Range Missile to expand the firing envelope as well as to demonstrate safe operation of the aircraft during missile plume ingestion into the aircraft engine under worst case scenarios. The missile was launched from LCATejas piloted by Wg Cdr Siddharth Singh on 27 April 2018 from the firing range off the Goa coast after exhaustive study of the missile separation characteristics and plume envelope. LCATejas has been designed & developed by DRDO’s autonomous society – Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).

Integration of Derby, a BVR class missile is one of the major objectives of Final Operational Clearance (FOC) of LCATejas.

The aircraft was tracked by two other Tejas aircraft in close formation to capture the firing event in the specially instrumented high speed cameras for detailed analysis and comparison with the simulation model for validation. The entire planning, practice sorties and final firing was carried out by ADA and it’s National Flight Test Centre (NFTC) officials Cmde JA Maolankar and GpCapt A Kabadwal, IAF, DG(AQA), HAL & INS HANSA.

Based on the successful integration and demonstration, Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness (RCMA), a unit of DRDO has cleared the series production aircraft of Squadron 45, to be equipped with Derby operational capability. LCATejas has successfully completed a series of captive flight trials to clear Derby for the full operational capability in the entire FOC envelope. In the past, Tejas has qualified for the armaments and missile release related trials.

Raksha Mantri Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman has complimented DRDO and other agencies involved for making LCATejas fighter jet, a world class aircraft platform.

Chairman DRDO& Secretary Department of Defence R&D Dr. S Christopher, congratulated and said that with this firing, LCATejas achieved another major milestone towards FOC certification.

Tejas LCA undertook 6 sorties a day. Each mission, lasting for 45 minutes on the lower side to one and half hours, proved the indigenous fighter jet's efficiency in an operational role.

Ah yes, the myth of Gripen endurance.. Have a look at this leaked chart from Swiss Trials posted over at BRF

Do look out for Endurance/AAR/Loiter time...Gripen scores a poor 3.8 out of a maximum of 10.. This is NOT 3.8 hours, it means that in the Swiss evaluation, Gripen scored well below EF (5.5) and Rafale (6) on this count (and below Rafale on every count).

These mutrakaars are not just bundlebaaz, they are thieves and liars and sold outs...

Every step ahead that Tejas takes, they get more desperate and more agitated and more frenzied in their attempts to bring it down.

I think as a first try at least the LCA mk 1 can get off the ground and carry some weapons , should be good enough for a first try .....it's not a panacea and not to be compared with f16 and other overstretched comparisons

lets put it this way , LCA mk 1 is worthy of packland and so should be deployed ONLY on the western fronts ....it can handle anything pakcland has .....

as for the eastern or northern fronts where we are facing china we should see if mk 2 has better endurance and carrying specs otherwise we have to depend on foreign imports until we get the mca done

sorry to be so down to earth ... ...face it , lca mk1 is a limited aircraft , great as a first try but not a panacea for the air force

addendum: gosh how could i have forgotten than as a replacement for our ageing mig21 flying coffins, in that regards, yes ! the lca mk1 is an absolute life-saver !! thanks HAL and ADA !!

India should continue to develop single engined LCA line simultaneously with AMCA. While AMCA & Aurora UAV can be full stealth aircrafts, LCA after Mk2 should evolve into semi stealth (cheaper) option at Mk3 stage. I think EADS MAKO type of design would be a good option for LCA MK3. LCA should also have an AJT version equipped with Kaveri Engine.

As Tejas inches towards final clearance, DRDO chairman explains why the fighter jet programme was delayed

https://www.indiatoday.in/india/sto...-jet-programme-was-delayed-1222844-2018-04-29

In an exclusive interview to India Today, Dr S Christopher, chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) clarified that it would be wrong to say that the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) was made in a span of three decades. He explained that that it was only in 1998 that the government decided to go for full-scale production of Tejas and allocated money for it.
Dr S Christopher also held the Indian Airforce responsible for the delay in making Tejas. Changing specifications mid-way through the design and development process or changing requirements "led to delays," he said.

The DRDO chairman added that specifications regarding the engine of the Tejas couldn't be finalised for a long time because of the constantly changing requirements.

Gagan Shakti-2018: LCA-Tejas learns to Hunt in Pack with Big Brother Sukhoi-30MKI

8 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) for the first time participated in Indian Airforce’s Biggest air Exercise in last three decades and flew countless sorties with main Air Superiority aircraft of the Indian Air Force, which is Sukhoi-30MKI.

In first of the Joint Missions flown by LCA-Tejas and Sukhoi-30MKI, Pilots of both aircraft not only got the feel of each others aircraft capabilities but were also perfecting their tactics and ideas to create a hunting pack between an Air Defence Point Interceptor fighter and Air Superiority fighter aircraft to further improve coordination between two jets.

Top Brass of IAF is very keen on using Combination of Light category and Heavy category fighter jets to provide effective both offensive and defensive capabilities in case of the two front war where Sukhoi-30MKI is expected to fight on both the fronts and also guide and help other aircraft in the fleet for effective missions.

Sukhoi-30MKI due to its powerful NIIP N011M Bars (Panther) passive electronically scanned array radar is often used by IAF as “Mini-AWACS” to support various other aircraft in its fleet towards their mission objectives. Sukhoi-30MKI using its net-centric warfare capability can not only provide target information but also provide buddy firing mode, target information acquired by it but passed on to the other fighters.

A small fleet of Sukhoi-30MKI flying at Higher Altitude can guild Swarm of LCA-Tejas aircraft while staying away from the area of action but also be able to intervene whenever it is required. Sukhoi-30MKI with its buddy-buddy refueling capabilities can also act as Mini-Tanker for LCA-Tejas fleet to keep them longer in the air if required as per their missions.

To further improve coordination and also develop more tactics, IAF will be transferring few Active Sukhoi-30MKI pilots to the LCA-Tejas Squadrons when new aircrafts are delivered in near future. IAF which plans to acquire 83 MK1-A and 201 MK-2 Tejas aircraft in the future will also see both aircrafts also sharing Airbases in the future.
