:laugh: Thing is, in a trainer aircraft, the trainer always do take the back seat whereas rookie does take the front seat
rookie ??? he is air chief,he not from flying branch thats what me meant to ask.

ACM Arun Raha is a MiG-21 and MiG-29 pilot. Given that MiG-21, a high altitude fighter, is slated to be replaced by LCA, another high-altitude fighter, I think the ACM can give a good feedback.

By flying does not necessary means he will be piloting it ..

Even if he went for a MIG-27 or Mirage 2000th ride, He would have been sitting on rear seat, He is not trained to fly each and every aircraft in IAF ..

Our air chief has the flying experience of around 3500 sorties.

Group Catain, M. Rangachari was in the back-seat while Raha piloted the trainer aircraft for 30 minutes according to HAL spokesperson, Gopal Sutar, as per news reports.

TWO TEJAS JETS BEING PREPARED FOR AIR-TO-AIR REFUELING & NEW GUN INSTALLATION

The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), the DRDO lab handling the development of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, today said it was preparing two prototypes of the indigenously designed fighter jet for the next phase of the programme.



While one prototype is being readied for equipping the jet with the air-to-air refuelling capability, the other is being prepared for installation of a gun in the LCA.


“The gun trial is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year. The air-to-air refuelling tests are slated to begin from December,” said ADA chief Commodore CD Balaji.


Balaji spoke to The Tribune after IAF Chief Arup Raha flew a trainer LCA-Tajas here today. “It is my first sortie in Tejas, it is a good aircraft for induction into IAF operations,” a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL, the contractor for manufacturing the jet) press release quoted Raha as having said.


Raha, who sat in the rear seat of the two-seater trainer variant LCA with Group Captain M Rangachari in the front, flew the plane for about 30 minutes after taking off from the HAL airport in the afternoon.


“It is a moral boosting gesture from the IAF Chief and shows the faith our customer has in our abilities,” said T Suvarna Raju, CMD, HAL.


Raha, himself a decorated fighter pilot, is the first IAF Chief to check out an LCA trainer personally. The combat-variant LCAs are single-seater aircraft meant for solo flying.


“The Air Chief Marshal carried out manoeuvres checking out the entire flying envelope of the aircraft. He carried out simulated air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks. He also assessed the advanced modes of the radar and helmet-mounted display sight (HMDS),” HAL said.


The series production of the LCA-Tejas has already commenced at the HAL facility at Bengaluru and the first squadron of the LCA is expected to be formed by July 2016.


However, the first squadron of LCAs (20 aircraft) will not have the air-to-air refuelling facility, a must for all modern aircraft, or the gun meant for use in a dog-fight scenario. The supersonic fighter, powered by an American GE engine, though, will be armed with other weapons tried and tested in various firing ranges in the country.


The IAF requires six LCA squadrons to replace its aging fleet of Soviet era MiG 21 and MiG 27 jets.

FINAL OPERATIONAL CLEARANCE FOR TEJAS LIKELY BY YEAR END

Jodhpur: The latest on the front of indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas is not very heartening. LCA Tejas, which after its aerobatic performance at the Bahrain International Airshow 2016 in February followed with its demonstration of firing skill during Iron Fist 2016, was touted for getting a Final Operational Clearance (FOC) soon seems to have inched farther away from it.
The FOC which was expected by mid-2016 for Tejas shall now come by year end or perhaps by 2017 beginning.

What is ailing the grant of FOC as per the highly placed sources in DRDO includes integration of Air-to-Air Refuelling probe with LCA Tejas and its trials." Some more tests of Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) Derby missile are still remaining. Further, radar testing is on", said an official associated with the Project adding that in another month or two, the Air-to-Air Refuelling shall in all probability be tested in Rajasthan or from Jamnagar.



The official further added that preparations and coordination with the Indian Air Force is being chalked out for managing a target for the Derby missile here. Ironically, DRDO officials in Delhi attributed the delay in FOC to procedural lapses. When quizzed about the Laser Guided Bomb (LGB) fired from Tejas missing the target during the Exercise Iron Fist 2016, the official attributed the same to bad weather and the 'probability percentage of failure' inherent and indeed granted to such systems.

It is to be mentioned that LCA Tejas is a single seat, single engine multi-role light fighter aircraft developed indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It has the fly by wire, state-of-the-art open architecture computer for avionics and better weapon and combat capability.

The official shared that while the ground integration of fifth generation Air-to-Air Close Combat Missile, Python 5 is over; its aerial trials along with those for Beyond-Visual- Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) Derby missile are pending. Tejas had earlier successfully test fired the BVRAAM Derby missile. All the aforementioned form a part of the FOC consent.

Box: Running behind the initial projected time for FOC, Tejas is now aiming at getting the FOC by December end instead of mid-2016 or perhaps even 2017 beginning. Tejas is also armed with a Russian CCM R- 73 and Laser Guided Bombs,Griffin and Paveway. Designed to replace ageing MiG fighter fleet of IAF, Ministry of Defence in January had announced plans to start full-scale production of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas in 2017.

It is to be mentioned that India will have to make do with the Israeli Derby BVRM till its own Astra which so far has been fired from Su-30 MKI gets the operational status for Tejas. While India is eyeing export market for light combat aircraft, Tejas has been much awaited by the IAF to replace its dwindling fighter squadrons and obsolete fighter fleet.

In an interview to All India Radio, the minister stressed that the Indian Air Force can get two Tejas fighters at the price of one Rafale jet.
NEW DELHI: The first squadron of Tejas fighter jets will be flying before Diwali, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said, adding that the indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA) is as good as Rafale , even though its load carrying capacity and range is lesser.

He also said that by the year-end, the government will decide on which multi-role fighter jets will be manufactured in the country.

In an interview to All India Radio, the minister stressed that the Indian Air Force can get two Tejas fighters at the price of one Rafale jet.

"In the air force, a new fighter has not been inducted since 1994. Tejas was stuck for 32 years. Now, two planes have been supplied and a few more will be supplied in a couple of months," Parrikar said.

"The first squadron of Tejas will be ready by September-October and it be flying before Diwali," the minister said.

"Our Tejas has the same qualities as Rafale. Although Tejas is in lightweight category, with its range also half compared with Rafale, but in terms of avionics, electronics and firepower it is no less than Rafale," he said.

"One Rafale fighter is worth approximately Rs.700 crore to Rs.750 crore while an Su-30 costs about Rs.475 crore. Compared to these planes, India's Tejas is in the range of Rs.200 crore to Rs.250 crore only. We can get two Tejas at the price of one Rafale," the minister said.

Parrikar said concluding the deal to buy Rafale fighters from Dassault Aviation of France will take a "few more weeks", and added that the negotiations on price was important.

"You will have to bring down the cost. If you throw away the price they demand, our coffers will soon be empty," he said.

Asked about the plans to manufacture the multi-role fighter jets in the country, Parrikar said: "By the end of this year, a decision will be taken on which fighter aircraft will be made in India. We have not decided yet whether we will make the F-18, Eurofighter, Rafale or Griffin."

On the dip in the numbers of IAF squadrons, the defence minister said the gap will be bridged soon.

"The sanctioned strength of fighter squadrons is 42, but 100 percent is never reached. We have 34 squadrons at present. In the next three to four years, four to five squadrons of Tejas will be added; a few more squadrons of Sukhoi will also come. By then two squadrons of Rafale jets will also come," Parrikar said.

The minister, asked about the new Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), said its effects will be visible from next year.

In the next seven to eight years, the ratio of imports in defence equipments may come down to 30 to 35 percent, making India "almost self-reliant", Parrikar said.

The minister said the ratio of import in military hardware has come down from 70 percent to 63 percent at present.

"If every year the decrease is five to ten percent, in the next five years, it can come under 40 percent. When it comes under 30 percent, we will be more or less self-dependent. Some items are such that manufacturing them in the country is not profitable. It is better to buy (from abroad) because the cost and numbers do not justify domestic production," he said.

At 700 crores we should get 3.5 Tejas which means for cost of 36 Rafale we get 126 Tejas. Please dump the Rafale deal......

Seriously ? will they go for another MMRCA like program ?

How can we even consider other planes when simply Rafale won over them ?

Out of the context, I have one doubt which was though raised by other members was left unanswered in this thread. Why is ADA not testing Tejas with conformal tanks. It would increase its combat radius by 40%-50% right? I do agree that drag tests have to be repeated, but it was proved multiple times, CFTs donot increase any drag (ex: Israeli version of F-16, F-22, Rafale etc) unlike drop tanks which increases air drag like anything.

R&D programme should go on simultaneously with the production. Just like a small number of Su-30MKI is being upgraded for carrying Brahmos, some Tejas aircrafts (may be 40 or so) can be upgraded with CFTs for deep strike purposes just like Mirage-2000H.

If that was the given as a requirement by IAF, I am sure it would have been in top priority for ADA ..

Afaik, Even AMCA was not given such requirement, It wouldn`t be surprising if IAF suddenly issue such requirement in near future for Tejas MK2, IAF requirements are mostly based on technology it experienced first hand from operating foreign aircraft in exercise as well as in its own inventory ..

I'm somewhat disappointed from this reporting, as earlier first squadron was being planned to be formed in JULY.. and now before October.
