US FDA to lift band on two IPCA plants in India for import of coronavirus medicine


After a ban of nearly six years, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has partially lifted an import alert on Ipca Laboratories’ two labs in Madhya Pradesh, India, to ensure the supply of chloroquine tablets, considered to be one of the possible treatments for the infections. The US FDA has voluntarily imposed a ban on MP’s Ratlam plant in July 2014.

The medicine is considered one of the possible treatments for the infection, officially called Covid-19, by the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC). For the import of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) of hydroxychloroquine sulphate and chloroquine phosphate produced at the company’s APl manufacturing unit situated at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, the US FDA has partially lifted the ban to allow the import in the US.

Kidney patients are more vulnerable to COVID-19 infections--India Science Wire


The COVID-19 pandemic is throwing up unique challenges for health systems. It presents particular challenges for patients who receive regular haemodialysis. These patients with damaged kidneys, also known as uremic patients, are particularly vulnerable to infection and may exhibit greater variations in clinical symptoms and infectivity.

“Unlike other at-risk individuals, these patients do not have the ability to stay at home and not interact with others. Despite the high risk they face, they must travel to dialysis centers 2–3 times every week. This significantly increases the risk of transmission of infection to patients themselves, family members, medical staff and facility workers, and all others,” says Prof. Vivekanand Jha, Executive Director, George Institute for Global Health India and President of the International Society of Nephrology.

The involvement of kidney in COVID-19 infection seems to be frequent. When the infection is severe, it becomes an independent predictor of mortality.


Patients with COVID-19 infection, preliminary reports suggested a lower incidence (3 to 9 percent) of AKI; but later reports indicate a higher frequency of kidney abnormalities.
In a paper entitled “The Novel Coronavirus 2019 epidemic and the Kidneys”, written by an expert group of nephrologists from around the world including China, it has been pointed out that all family members living with dialysis patients must follow the precautions and regulations given to patients to prevent person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 within the family. The precautions include body temperature measurement, good personal hygiene, handwashing, and prompt reporting of potentially sick people. The results of the study have been published in the Journal Kidney International.

The management of patients on dialysis who have been suspected to have been in contact with COVID-19 should be carried out according to strict protocols to minimize risk to other patients and healthcare personnel taking care of these patients,” said Prof. Jha. These guidelines have been made available on the International Society of Nephrology website.

As per earlier reports of SARS and MERS-CoV infections, acute kidney injury (AKI) had developed in 5 to15 percent cases and about 60 to 90 percent of those cases reported mortality. In the case of patients with COVID-19 infection, preliminary reports suggested a lower incidence (3 to 9 percent) of AKI; but later reports indicate a higher frequency of kidney abnormalities. A study of 59 patients with COVID-19 found that about two-thirds of patients developed a massive leak of protein in urine during their stay in hospital.

It is recommended that persons with potential COVID-19 risk must be given the same supportive care as given to critically ill patients. Supportive care includes bed rest, nutritional and fluid support, maintenance of blood pressure and oxygenation, prevention and treatment of complications by providing organ support, maintaining hemodynamic stability, and preventing secondary infection. As expected from a Communist country, it has now been suspected that China was very well aware of the dreaded effects of the Coronavirus and its ability to be hugely contagious way back in December. The Chinese authorities willingly suppressed the findings, claims a reputed Chinese media house.

Caixin Global, an independent publication published from Beijing and other locations in China, has reported that genomics laboratories sequenced the coronavirus by December 27, but were ordered by local and national officials to hand over or destroy the samples and not release their findings. It has now emerged that, China’s top medical authority issued a gag order in December 2019 after Wuhan labs sequencing coronavirus found it resembled the SARS virus that killed nearly 800 people in 2002-2003.

China is also guilty of not informing its own people about the deadly virus despite knowing the threat. Caixin Global reports that administration of Wuhan deliberately did not inform a health team from Beijing during a January 8 visit that local medical staff had already been infected by patients. The government wanted to keep its contagiousness under wraps. Consequently, the city then went ahead with its lunar new year celebration on January, which brought thousands of families to the city to celebrate, without informing people that coronavirus was transmissible between humans.

China flooded social media with photos and videos of its 'new hospitals', cleaning of streets, superior preparedness and having many journalists and writers peddle its version of the coronavirus outbreak.

Whistle-blower doctor Li Wenliang was reprimanded and hounded by the Communist Chinese regime for sounding the alarm about the early cases of COVID19.

As China failed to inform its people and the world about the contagious effects of Coronavirus which resulted in its spread, the Chinese government resorted to propaganda to hide its failures.

From claiming that the virus originated elsewhere to claims of hospitals built in hours and cleaning up cities in minutes, the Chinese government did everything to suppress the truth about its failures.

The Chinese disinformation campaign went on full steam in February in an attempt to draw the attention of its own citizens and the world away from China’s pathetic response to the outbreak. China flooded social media with photos and videos of its 'new hospitals', cleaning of streets, showcasing their superior preparedness over other countries and having many journalists and writers peddle its version of the coronavirus outbreak.

It can be recalled that whistle-blower doctor Li Wenliang had warned his colleagues about the outbreak of Coronavirus on 30th December, 2019. His warning about the outbreak of an illness that resembled severe acute respiratory syndrome, later acknowledged as COVID-19, was shared on WeChat and later became public. Instead of taking the matter seriously, the Communist Chinese administration had reprimanded and hounded Li Wenliang for sounding the alarm about the early cases of COVID19.

What India did today at 5.00pm to clap for the health care workers is unbeatable. The same, earlier in the month was done by Spaniards to appreciate their own health care workers. India was second to do it.

The stress, the health care workers are going thru at the risk of their own lives deserves a high praise. I have two sons of mine, both doctors and they on everyday basis are exposing themselves to the risk of this virus, to save others. At 5.00pm, I was clapping uncontrollably.

Dude you just copy pasted the definition of the herd immunity which I was explaining. Herd immunity prevents the mass scale incidents of infecting a large number of non immune people but it does not prevent a single or two non immune people if they come in contact of an infected immune person. Herd immunity is always seen on a larger scale. People here are giving examples of herd immunity for a very small group of people. Herd immunity(natural or by induced ways) is the only permanent solution for COVID-19 and wishful thinking of complete eradication of the corona virus from our entire ecosystem is just not possible. A lot of people are thinking about the 1918 Spanish Flu and how certain populations seemed to develop an immunity to it and escape the worst of it , by being infected with an earlier less lethal strain of the flu.

"The second wave of the 1918 pandemic was much deadlier than the first. The first wave(in late 1917 to early 1918) had resembled typical flu epidemics; those most at risk were the sick and elderly, while younger, healthier people recovered easily.

Take in case Polio did anyone ever develop immunity for it?

Ummm, yes? Childhood inflection with polio does indeed confer lifelong immunity for that particular variation of polio. But with polio mass infections there was a terrible cost of course, in the form of paralysis in 1% or so of polio cases.

But we ,now, have vaccines which confer immunity for all the variations or serotypes of polio and that is a far less dangerous method of conferring herd immunity.

The thing is this: so far, unlike polio , the scientists have not developed a vaccine for COVID-19.
