Re: What military equipment would YOU like to see in the Indian Armed

The only thing we really need right now is to give each one of our million strong army the best body armor, communication equipment ,night vision goggles , helmets, all terrain boots and personal firearms(everything from the best pistol to the best MANPAD) money can buy, once we do this we'll be at least three times as effective we are as a fighting force and that will make a helluva difference!

Re: What military equipment would YOU like to see in the Indian Armed

i share your basic vision ....but mine is simpler and therefore more attainable -

yes india should more seriously aim for totally indegenous programs ... ...BUT less variety of products and but widening the strategic aspect - i.e- less variety of weapons but greater numbers of each and thus greater deployment ..by limiting the variety of weapons the idea is to intensify the effort to totally indegenise production and then do our own innovation and development to next generation .... at the mement we are dazzled by new products from abroad and so we keep buying ....FEWER PROJECTS , BETTER INDEGENISATION LARGER MANUFACTURING

india has already spent a lot widening the range of products - can now afford to go indigenous on each ... we are good at missile development ? so more missiles - less buying AC from half-friends
in summary - two main areas :-
(1) i would like to see india go for megaton test -
(2) missile development - in collaboration with ISRO for space to earth missile weapons
weapon development in india is a complex topic because anything with war and peace is made to correlate with the following departments-
1. foreign policy
2. india and the world
3. india and the uno
4. india and the nam
5. india and saarc.

usually one of the above factor mix up with the other and thus to be on safer side india does what straight forward countries( like SL, nepal and even pakistan) doesnt do. fall back and make compromises.

so the problem is there even in clearance regime as stated above.

apart from that we have shortage of experienced scientists and workers- why? because when people were mastering aircrafts we were enslaved, when people were mastering electronics we were fighting for survival and when people mastered computers we arrived late but still managed to leave some footprints.

so in overall manner we shall better say that we should make whatever we can and rest get it from friends WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY learning how to make them ourselves

your last sentence summarizes what i meant

except - less ambitious in spread of weapons - more homework thinking in terms of strategic weaponry - with less spread is the opportunity to go deeper i.e design and manufacture at home

Gandiva from Varuna
Varunastra
Agniastra
Prithaviastra
Vayuastra
Puspak Viman
Varun pash
Divyaastra
Brhmaastra (minaturised Megaton nucs)
Indrapash
Khadag
Gada
Narmund
Vishnu's disc
Shiva's Trishula
Ganesha's Shool
An astra is a missile-type weapon that is to be hurled at an enemy. Examples include arrows from bows. A shastra is a personal weapon, like swords and maces, that must be constantly operated by the warrior.
Brahmadanda: This is one of the most powerful weapon in the universe. This astra is the most powerful weapon of Brahma.
Pashupatastra: It is believed in Hindu mythology that Pashupatastra is one of the most devastating weapons, as it is the weapon of the consort of the Godhead Mahadeva, i.e. Mahakali. Mahadeva literally means "Highest of all gods" and Mahakali means "Goddess who is beyond time". This weapon, granted to Arjuna by Shiva, is one of the most destructive and foreboding weapon in Mahabharata.
Narayanastra: Invincible and painful, this astra is unconquerable except by total submission.
Vaishnavastra : One of the most powerful astras, this cannot be stopped by anyone except its creator, Vishnu.
Brahmashir Astra: A weapon capable of greater destruction than the Brahmastra. It can burn all creation to ashes once discharged.
Brahmastra: Embedded with the mystical force of Brahma, this weapon releases millions of missiles, great fires and a destructive potential capable of extinguishing all creation, if not used by and aimed only at a celestial fighter. Modern speculation has equated its destructive nature to be similar to that of a nuclear weapon.
Nagastra: The snake weapon, used by Karna against Arjuna. It is considered as an irresistible weapon equal to the Brahmastra. It has a fame that never misses its target.
Vasavi Shakti: The magical dart weapon of Indra, unfailing at executing its target. Indra granted it to Karna during the Kurukshetra war.
Vajra: The thunderbolt weapon of Indra, who is the God of Thunder and Lightning, akin to Zeus and Jupiter.[18]
Agneyastra: The fire weapon, created by Agni, master of the flames
Varunastra: The water weapon, created by Varuna, master of the oceans
Vayavastra: The wind weapon, created by Vayu
The three potential astras are Vaishnavastra, Pashupatastra and Brahmadanda. However, these astras cannot harm five principle gods i.e. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha and Devi as they are the supreme manifestation of the divine. Especially, these astras cannot harm Vishnu, the greatest of all gods, Shiva, the destroyer himself, and Shakti, both Supreme Being and the original energy behind all astras.

Re: What military equipment would YOU like to see in the Indian Armed

Logistics to be improved.

Rite now, many different classes of vehicle from different mfgs. in light and medium class - 1 Ton, 3 Ton Jonga, Shaktiman, TATA 715, Leyland Stallion, Tuffy,Gypsy, Mahindra Jeeps, etc.

Heavy Field Arty Tractors and Tank Transports are Standardised on Scania and Tatra, both expensive and imported.
TEL for Missile carriers are Leyland (Semi trailer), Tatra (10 x 10 version) , Volvo (Semi Trailer), etc.

It is a logistical nightmare of our ow making.

Standardise with light / medium category from 2-3 types and Heavy category from 2-3 types.

Re: What military equipment would YOU like to see in the Indian Armed

Arty guns in India: 75 mm (reserve), 105 mm, 122 mm, 130 mm, 155 mm, and it is reported 180mm.

Nato: 105mm and 155mm.

Junk the rest and work with 3 types only. Unfortunately, our reliable fallback option is 130 mm, , but remaining can be junked.

Instead, develop shells for specialised roles these guns were doing.

@kushalappa,

It would be best if we settle on 155 mm alone, since we already make long-range rounds and we would have choices ranging from America to Russia. And every other country in between to buy howitzers.

Re: What military equipment would YOU like to see in the Indian Armed

(1) i would like to see a "handful" of megaton nukes - just for show

(2) i would like to see the world's largest arsenal of tactical nukes and associated long-range delivery systems ...long-range being defined as being able to reach the furthest point on lizard-land ...i.e. cruise missiles with variable velocity capable of supersonic when necessary and subsonic at other times

3) more nuke powered very long duration submarines with food rations to last more than 8 years hidden sub-marine loaded with those tactical nukes and delivery systems described above ..to conduct sub-marine "guerrilla warfare"

(4) proper rations for the soldiers free of insects and pesticides having nutritional value enabling them to fight .

Re: What military equipment would YOU like to see in the Indian Armed

Well sometimes its good to dream. India is going to be strong and rich country over the next half a century. We never know what it can buy ....... etc.
and if i may say, more importantly what we will be able to make entirely on our own !!

India is on the verge of a real paradigm change to a whole new level and after that .... no telling how much more can be done

i also do hope some serious thought can be given to filtering the list , taking out the fun and games and forward the resulting serious comments to min of defence

Re: What military equipment would YOU like to see in the Indian Armed

Sounds good to have only one type....logistics and firepower wise its unbeatable.

Maybe Lightweight 155mm for mountains is good idea.

Reason I ask for 105 mm is this:

> Its a hoary old piece of iron, been around for years, but designed and mfgd. here by us,( incl. shells i believe), so less hiccups and blockades possible.

Shells in present form not effective against hardened targets , but commander on the ground has some option to hit back with 'em. Anti personnel shell still quite effective. Its better than nothing
.Also,
> can be broken down and transported by donkey (mule)
> Havildar and Subedar Major saabs in Arty units can train their people quickly - no complex rocket science
> Airlift by all Helos / planes except Cheetah.
> Towed by Jeep vehicle upwards
> Can be physically manhandled into place by crew
> Its a good backup plan and last argument of IA
> Nato realises all of the above and still hold onto theirs.

So, until we have nos., we fight with this, brothers.

Our main heavy hitter, in terms of battery firepower, effectiveness and numbers, etc. is the venerable 130 mm M-46.This should go first (up gunning to 155mm), to simplify logistics (2 types of shell instead of 3, up gunned version not much heavier than base version, large commonality of parts, crew and training, bringing IA to Contemporary NATO Std, etc.)

Rhinemetall has an old 160mm Mortar on an APC. Mortar is integrated neatly, with separate base and recoil system fitted out. Loading is automatic.

Can we have BMP with such mods ?

Rite now, BMP with 120 mm Heavy Mortar is available, mortar is not integral but detachable , and needs 2-3 crew to load and fire.

The Black Knight is a prototype Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle designed by BAE Systems. Similar in size and appearance to a tank, it is armed with a turret-mounted 30mm gun and a coaxial machine gun. Although the armored vehicle can be controlled from a command center, the Black Knight does feature some autonomous functions in the turret and can also plan a route without hitting obstacles by itself. If necessary, the Black Knight can also be controlled by a Dismounted Control Device (DCD). Information from the robot is relayed to and viewed by the Commander's Independent Viewer (CIV), or to the DCD in the latter case. The vehicle is fitted with a Caterpillar diesel engine, developing 300 horsepower. The Black Knight uses many automotive components from the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles to reduce costs and simplify maintenance. Its high maximum speed allows it to keep pace with main battle tanks. The Black Knight can be airlifted by the C-130 transport aircraft. It is an early prototype, which demonstrates advanced robotic technologies. Vehicle is currently being tested and evaluated by the US Army

What is its country of origin ?

I would like something like this to accompany infantry which are tasked with retaking peaks...

120mm LR mortar can really devastate enemy bunkers dug in atop mountains...

Wish we had them during Kargil...

Dada, why do you think we had so many causalities in Kargil? We didn't have enough long range weapons to take out enemy positions from standoff distance?
