Shogun on disney hotstar is interesting, it's for japanese to say how well their culture has been represented, but from an outsider's perspective their culture hasn't been subjected to negative stereotype tropes yet in the show.

It came as a pleasant surprise that on the latest episode of "NCIS Hawaii", one of the characters is shown with a Ganesh idol in her workplace, and another character remarks benignly on it, referring to it as the God of fresh beginnings. Just a few minutes before or after that, yet another person in the show, detects a Sanskrit word( Surya) as part of a secret code to reveal a location. Impressive! Two mentions of Dharmic things, neither of them negative, one of them quite positive.

But what is still missing are openly Hindu main characters in serious TV series. There are 3 Moslem characters in serious dramas, FBI, NCIS LA and NCIS New Orleans( the latter 2 are no longer in production). And they all are serious, openly Moslem individuals, and they emphasise the tolerant nature of Islam, particularly when faced with extremists in the community. Nothing remotely like these exist for Hindus. Even when there are Hindu/Indian sounding names on TV, there is absolutely nothing particularly Dharmic about the individuals. At some level, the American entertainment industry has a complex or resistance to such portrayals.

A friend very plausibly remarked that there are economic and political reasons for the way Moslems are depicted on these programs. There are many more Moslems than Hindus, and many more Moslem majority countries, depicting openly Moslem characters makes these series attractive to this large demographic, thereby increasing the popularity of the series. Positive portrayals of Moslems is very politically correct in the woke ideology. It helps to blunt any negative image the public has of Moslems and Islam, at least potentially. Such portrayals also in theory encourage Moslems to emulate the characters of TV shows, and reduce the perception, in the targeted group, that the US or Americans in general, are against Moslems.

There is no equivalent motivation vis-a-vis Hinduism and Hindus. who are not seen as a threat, nor as people in need of help with their image. Add to that a degree of prejudice against the culture-which also extends to the pagan aboriginals of the US- and you get a clearer picture.

my observation was, when ever murican state or society has done harm(past or present) to a race or religion, their creative folk compensate by giving representation in their main stream entertainment. japanese, koreans, blacks, latinos and now muslims.

tomorrow if U.S goes to war with china and causes devastating human casualties, later they too will get space in their mainstream.

hindu representation will have to thru merit based "regular visa waiting list", no historical "white man's burden" on muricans. brits on the other hand have made one as their PM.

In the same NCIS, I have seen referances of Hindu terrorism and many degrading things about Hinduism, that was the reason I stopped watching the show.

I don't remember the season or episode as it's been quite sometime, so they must be compensating for something somewhere else that's the reason you are seeing that in the perticular season.

Really! Do you remember which of the 4 it was? There's the original NCIS( in its 21st season now) , then NCIS LA( ended last year) ,NCIS New Orleans( ended 3 years ago) and now NCIS Hawaii, in its 3rd season presently.

The only negative portrayal of an Indian/ Indian origin person in NCIS Hawaii, was last year when someone named ' Aaron Patel' was involved in sabotage of a project. But there was absolutely no reference to Hindus, Hinduism or Hindu terrorism in that episode.

There was an episode of the series " Quantico" about 5 or 6 years ago( starring Priyanka Chopra) where there was some stupid, obnoxious story about a few Hindus trying to frame Pakistan for a terror plot in the U.S. She and the storyline were roundly condemned, and she expressed regret for offending people. It's a plotline that has absolutely no basis in anything real. At least all those episodes on different TV shows, dealing with the Russian mafia or Chinese espionage are grounded in reality.

And there are many episodes of TV series where Islamic terrorism is portrayed. Now what is required are some openly Hindu/ Dharmic characters being good guys. Looks like we're going to have to wait for that!

In the same NCIS, I have seen referances of Hindu terrorism and many degrading things about Hinduism, that was the reason I stopped watching the show.

I don't remember the season or episode as it's been quite sometime, so they must be compensating for something somewhere else that's the reason you are seeing that in the perticular season.

I competed like 15-16 seasons of NCIS. I liked it much better than many other crime shows like CSI.
Did not see any kind of hate for Hinduism there. Although it not watch any other spinoff of NCIS.

Original NCIS was one of the most watched US shows and influenced a generation of Americans and led to multiple spinoff too. You might be confusing it with another show.

Only thing was they showed Mosad to be too much powerful with the character of Ziva David.
