The final and most challenging phase involved the indigenous manufacture of the engine. “We’re currently testing the locally produced engine for the Su-30MKI and are planning to launch its production in 2010.”
Any chance of this helping the Kaveri??

HAL to supply components for Sukhoi fighters to Russia

Zhukovski: The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will supply components to Russia for its Sukhoi range of combat jets for export to third countries, even as India's premier aviation giant prepares to roll out the first fully indigenous Su-30MKI multi-role fighter next year. India and Russia are expected to sign an inter- governmental agreement on supply on components by the end of this year, a top HAL executive has said. "We are already supplying navigation and communication equipment for installation on the Su-30MK series of fighters exported by Russia to other countries," GM of HAL's Nasik based Aircraft Manufacturing Division, V Balakrishnan said on sidelines of the International Aerospace Show-MAKS-2009.

The new agreement would provide for expanding the inventory to include the supply of airframe components for the multi-role jets to be exported by Russia, he said. Russia has supplied Su-30MK series fighters to Malaysia and Indonesia and there are plans to export this powerful weapons platform to Algeria and Venezuela, media reports said. "Next year HAL will achieve 100 per cent indigenisation of the Sukhoi aircraft - from the production of raw materials to the final plane assembly. We're currently testing the locally produced engine for Su-30MKI and are planning to launch its production in 2010," Balakrishnan said. "HAL will manufacture 60 Su-30MKI fighters in the full production cycle till 1015," Balakrishnan said.

The aerospace company has a long history of cooperation with Russian aviation industry since it started licensed production of MiG-21 fighters in 1960s, the best combat jet of the Cold War-era. It is now involved in the production of Su-30MKI, believed to be the world's best in its class. HAL's stall at the MAKS-2009 was inaugurated by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin here. The IAF is acquiring a total of 230 Su-30MKI multi-role jets by 2015, tailor-made to meet its requirements over next two decades. Under the Sukhoi deal HAL is to produce 140 jets under license involving 'deep' transfer of technology. The work began in 2004 with the assembly of knockdown kits provided by Irkut Aircraft Corporation, now part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC).

Manufacturing an engine according to specs using transferred technology should not be same as designing and fine tuning a engine from scratch.

What Kaveri lacks today is good Metallurgy, such deals won't be of any good to us. AL-31 is a engine for heavy class fighter and thus doesn't have the weight issue. On the other hand kaveri is to be used for light fighter making weight and thrust to weight ratin the most important factor.

Su-35BM

AviationLive - View topic - Su-35 BM article
Introduction
Since 1977, with the entry into service of the Flanker, that these fantastic aircraft didn´t stop evolving, from one model emerged several others: Su-27 SK, Su-27SKM, Su-30 MK, Su-30MK2, Su -30 MKM, Su-30MKV, Su-30 MKI, Su-33, Su-34/32, Su-35, Su-37…
Unfortunately this long lineage will end, but will end up in great style with a plane of 4 + + generation that will fill the gap between the Su-30MK and the PAK-FA, a plane of the 4 th generation which has 5 th generation technologies and that can only be overcome by the F-22.
This plane is the Su-35 BM that will become the backbone of the Russian Air Force until the PAK-FA is produced in sufficient numbers and will dominate the market between 2009 and 2015.

Airframe
The Su-35BM derives from the old Su-35, T-10M, and applies everything Sukhoi learned over the years with planes like the Su-30 in its various variants.
Among the things Sukhoi learned is the fact that a large RCS and the use of heavy materials in the airframe do not contribute to the performance of the aircraft, as such, Sukhoi substantially improved the basic structure of the plane.
In the new structure were used composite materials, which reduced the weight by 20%. The lines of the plane have been refined in order to reduce the radar energy reflected in the X band, the intakes of the engines are larger to allow a better flow of air, flaperons are large, it does not have canards * and the tail sting is smaller, moreover, it does not have the dorsal aerodynamic brake, its functions are now performed by active rudder . The fuselage has better aerodynamics and lifting ability in general.

Stealth
As mentioned earlier, Sukhoi learned that a large RCS does not help the plane, as such, to the refinement of the lines, Sukhoi allied other Stealth measures:
_ Use of RAM layers throughout the structure.
_ Treatment of the air inlets with a RAM layer with a thickness between 0.7 and 1.4 mm.
_ Treatment of the face of the engine with RAM material
_Treatment of the canopy with electro conductive materials that prevent reflection of radar waves.
These measures mean a RCS between 0.7 and 1 m2.
In terms of the thermal signature Sukhoi should have used ceramic materials in parts that reach higher temperatures, such as in the exhaust of the engine.

Cockpit
The cockpit of the Su-35BM is one of the most advanced in the world.
The cockpit has two large LCD with 22.5 by 30 cm and a resolution of 1400 by 1050 pixels, as well as a multi-functions backup LCD .
The LCD functions are to receive, process, and transmit data in various ways, whether these are graphics, numbers, TV images, etc.. They also produce and send video signals in digital format to the video recording unit.
The HUD has a control panel and a viewing angle of 30 ° by 20º, and its the IKSh-1M.
The control column of the engine and the control stick have HOTAS capability.
The helmet has a built in sight (HMS) and a small display.
The plane has satellite navigation systems and radio systems, digital map system, optical and electronic system for reconnaissance missions in a pod and digital communication systems.
The plane has 2 UHF radios and two VHF radios, voice and radio coding systems and Link-16 system to exchange data.
All these elements as well as data from radar, IRST and pods are controlled by 2 modern computers that enable the processing and transmission of data to the pilot at crucial moments, easing its workload.
The plane has sensory fusion.

Radar System
One of the radar systems that the Su-35BM can use is the Phazotron NIIR NO31 Zhuk-MSFE, however, the main choice is the Tikhomirov NIIP NO35E Irbis.
The Irbis is a multi functional radar that operates in the X wave band, and its a PESA (Passive Electronic Scanning Array) radar.
Due to the hydraulic systems in which the radar is mounted, it may deflect up to 120 ° horizontally in relation to the central axis of the plane, and up to 60 º upright in relation to the central axis of the plane, value that can be increased up to 120º using the electronic control and mechanical additional turn of the antenna.
The Irbis has the phenomenal power of 20Kw, giving the plane the ability to detect air targets with a RCS of 3m2 up to 400Km and 0.01m2 up to 90 km.
Ground targets are detected at a distance around 200 km.
The Irbis monitors and pursues up to 30 air targets at the same time and enables the shooting of up to 8 active air-to-air missiles simultaneously and up to 2 air-to-air semi-active missiles simultaneously **.
The Irbis monitors and pursues up to 4 ground targets and attacks 2 simultaneously , being able to map targets through pulse Doppler and SAR modes.
The Irbis does all this without ever leaving to monitor the airspace, this means, it is able to monitor and track air and ground targets previously identified while looking for new targets at the same time. The system EKVS-E BTsVM SOLO 35 is responsible for the fire control.
The Su-35 BM also has a radar in the tail, and for this function there are available the Phazotron NO12 and NO15 and Leninets VOO5 used in the Su-34.

IRST
The Su-35 has a system for detecting targets passively through their thermal signature, the OLS-35.
The OLS-35 detects aerial targets by their thermal signature at distances of up to 50km head-on and 90km in the rear quadrant ***.
The system also measures the distance to air targets up to 20km and ground targets up to 30km , it can monitor and follow up to 4 different air targets and can designate targets for laser guided missiles.

Electronic Warfare
The Su-35 BM uses the KNIRTI L175M Khibiny-M for this function.
This system is similar to the one in the F-18 G and operates on 3 modes:
_ Individual protection
_ Escort protection
_ Attack group protection
It is able to identify, coordinate and jam enemy threats, in addition it designates targets for anti-radiation missiles such as the Kh-31P.
The system has an individual display in the cockpit and works together with the radar, sending energy to the threats and to the disposable counter-measures , increasing the chance to evade enemy missiles.
It also has a MAWS to detect missiles at approach, a RWR , disposable counter-measures such as chaff, flares and in the future towed counter-measures such as the ones in the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Engines
The engines of the Su-35 BM will be the AL-41F with capacity of super-cruise and about 15.000 kg of thrust, however, will only be available in future versions.
Currently the Su-35 is equipped with the AL-41A, also called 117S, which are an AL-31 with new turbines of high and low pressure, new digital control system , new fans, and TVC.
These engines have 14.500kg of thrust, are more efficient, have an APU, and fire extinguishing system and a lifespan that can reach 6000 hours.

Weapons
As a multifunction fighter the Su-35BM has a wide range of weapons that allow it to perform multiple tasks, even in severely defended environments either by weapons or jamming devices ****:
_ Internal cannon GSH-30 of 30mm.
Air-to-Air
_R-77 ADDER in its various variants, with range up to 160km and the ability to maneuver at 12G.
_KS-172 for destruction of airborne strategic enemy (AWACS, refueling planes, etc.). With a range up to 400km and the ability to maneuver up to 12G *****.
_R-37, which is a missile that competes with the KS-172 but which should be used only with AWACS, etc.. It has a range up to 300km and can handle up to 9G.
_R-27 Alamo in its various variants with a range up to 120km and the ability to handle up to 8G.
_R-73 and R-74 for close combat with up to 30km range and ability to maneuver up to 12G ******.

why reinvent the wheel.. shouldnt we be reverse engineering as much as possible just like the americans and russians did when it came to rockets. its not like we were making some really super duper entity which no one has ever heard of. i find it hard to believe that when we are capable of making a miniature nuclear plant in a submarine, when we plan to send someone up into orbit in a few years time.. we still cant effectively build an engine?? its about bloody time we start working smartly.

We have to reinvent the wheel when no one is going to provide you the know how to actually design it. Just replicating will not lead us any where to design it or modify . Reverse engineering may help to certain extent , but it is not sufficient to actually develop something from scratch.

The Americans /Russians doesn't copy those rockets/missiles themselves , they had the help of scientists involved in those programs. Similarly we had some help from Russian scientists in designing/miniaturizing the nuclear reactor even we had installed and operated civilian versions of reactors for many years.

We have built engines in the past(Marut program) and building them at present (Kaveri and Indigenous Wankel Engine). It is manufacturing where we lack. Kaveri has attained 95 % of its design futures , it is just not suitable for a modified GSQR.

It has already giving us fruits as marine Engine , and it may power Tanks , trainers and UAVs.

IIRC Indigenous Wankel engine has been successfully flight tested on board Nishant ,it will soon replace the imported engines or done it already.

With Upgraded Engines , new Aesa and other upgrades, Su 30 MKI can do a good job if not better. Su 30 MKI is tailor made for IAF, hence the best bet . We are into total indigenous manufacture of Su 30 MKI , why we need to add one more .

But all these after the initial production run is complete and MKI's go for MLU right. I don't think we have COMPLETE indigeneous capability to manufacture the SU 30. Otherwise we should not have been facing so many issues with the Kaveri program (single crystal blades for engine). Although I agree that it will just be addition of one more type but isn't the same is supposed to be integrated with MKI in MLU? And this can act as growler for us in escort protection mode right.

Su-35 for India

After mentioning India last July among three countries to which the Sukhoi Su-35 would be pitched for export, sources reveal that Rosoboronexport has now formalised an offer to the Indian government. The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is understood to have conveyed officially to the Indian government just days ahead of the MAKS 2009 aero-show at Zhukovsky that India has the option of purchasing 16-20 Su-35 fighters -- about a squadron's worth. According to the offer, the production would be prioritised along with the Russian order for 48 jets, a deal that was finally struck once the show opened, but had obviously been finalised many weeks ago. The air forces of Brazil and Venezuela are also considering options with involving unspecified numbers of the Su-35. More details soon.

I guess we have had this discussion before. The MKI will be fully indigenous after 2010 save for a few parts like radar, which will still be sourced from Russia. The PESA version was supposed to go into the MKI after 2010. But, looks like IAF is ready to wait for the AESA version of the IRBIS.

Nevertheless, buying the Su-35 will lead to a whole lot of other problems already faced with the MKI earlier. Integration and development will again have to be worked on. MKI MLU and Su-35 will follow parallel development paths with different timelines since there is no scope for their involvement as of now. MKI MLU is already planned out by HAL and IAF while Su-35 is not. It will lead to further delays.

A better option would be to go for more MKIs with Su-35 avionics and new engines that will also be used on the PAKFA for testing.

why not induct 2-3 Sqd's of Su-35 .......?
Like I said. Its a waste of time. Inducting an aircraft is not enough. We have to properly define its role in our doctrine. More MKIs is more suitable.

Su-35 is a superior aircraft. But, all our bureaucratic bungling will be a problem. PAKFA is enough for foreign replacement.

Its time we build and induct our own aircraft after PAKFA.

Su-30MKI to go stealthy
After the F-15 Silent eagle it’s time for Su-30MKI to disapear out of the radar. There have been reports that Russia’s UAC (United Aircraft Corporation) and India’s HAL (Hindustan Aeronotics Limited) are developing the ‘Smart Skin’ concept for Su-30MKI.
Smart skin also know as Artificial neural membrane refers to a new class of functional structure developed through research adaptive and evolutionary neural networks and programmable materials. The greatest interest in ANM structures surround their potential as open architecture environments for the integration of microscale and nanoscale devices. Artificial neural membrane technology development has been funded by the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts, for application to quasi-steady state flapping wing flight. Currently Aerospace Research Systems, Inc. the agency that pioneered work in developing artificial neurons for use in control of multifunctional smart structures is applying the technology to reusable launch vehicles. Other applications include biotechnology processes, morphing aircraft and spacecraft, adaptive wind generators, and artificial organs. Recent research also indicates that ANM systems may provide the first truly automated intentional or conceptual programming environment.
By 2014, UAC together with HAL will begin upgrading the first 100 IAF Su-30MKIs by modifying their airframes to make them stealthy, converting the existing ‘Bars’ into an active phased-array radar, enhancing the situational awareness by incorporating active electronically scanned transmit/receive arrays on the aircraft’s wings and pumping up the defensive-aids suite by installing a combined radar/laser warning system and a missile approach warning system.
