BTW does the PLA use MMGs? After having watched all quite a few videos I don't remember seeing any (they always show either the rifle or their .50 cal HMG, or their grenade launcher).
keeping hardcore definitions of what an MMG is and so, focusing on calibre they indeed do have local made PK//PKM in 7.62x54mmR and also local made variants of FN MAG (yeah) in 7.62 NATO

finally they have some 5.8x42mm chambered belt fed machine gun and LMG variant of QBZ-95 in magazine//drum fed configuration as GPMG-ish role, both of these are given "Heavy" version of 5.8x42mm

actually that‘s a typical chinese type1956 7.62*39mm ball vs a first Gen 5.8mm

normally two types of cases were mass manufactured simultaneously : Copper clad steel case & lacquer coated steel one

-----
here is the 'other' one , but not brass case..

Can you give more pics of the 5.8 mm ammo and what you mean by first generation ?

first PLA Army has NO any .50 HMG but loads of 12.7*108 HMGs

the so called western standard 'belt-fed Medium GP machine gun seems to be some kind of unicorn IN PLA Army...lol...but it's always there...

in early ages ,there were the Type 67 and the improved Type 67-2 7.62mm*54R.

then here is the successor- QJY88 5.8mm(heavy Projectile)...but attention: the the LMG/Squad level MG NORMALLY does NOT fire this so called Heavy 5.8mm . the another 'user' of this heavy 5.8mm is QBU88 DMR.

standard 5.8mm Projectile and heavy Projectile

and now, you may see the NATO7.62 mediun GP MG here...

In HMG role, IA too uses both 12.7*99 HMG and 12.7*108 NSVT. In addition, we also have old 14.5*114 KPVT. All are deployed along LOC. In some sectors along LOC, even 40 mm L-70 canon is used in bunker busting roles.
Yes , even we call .50bmg as 12.7 mm cartridge .
I wonder why we never adopted our own ammo
