Arguing Russian Point of View

Let me become a devils advocate. Let me plead Russia’s case for a moment. Let us examine how wrong it is for US to reach the Russian border indirectly via Ukraine and jeopardize Russian security. Russian invasion is the result of that.

Russia is an economically inferior nation of 150 million souls, although with immense resources and technically competent yet their standard of living is lower. It faces the onslaught of the whole of Europe & United States. The latter control European politics, economies and technology from afar.

Using its influences, US has created a false sense of fear in post WW2 Europe that they are about to be overrun by a vastly superior eastern Communist mega state. Hence, they have to group together to stop this expansion. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was born with these kinds of views.

We have been taught by the media propaganda that this eastern megalith of the Soviet Union was led by a rude and harmful system of government that kills freedom. If not checked, they will gobble up the whole of Europe.

Only 10% of the above propaganda was truth. Soviets were as smart as the rest of Europeans or the US. After WW2 without a lot of help, they rebuilt the devastated country and were the first to fly space sputnik and man in space. But the West, phoo - phooed their achievements. It was a match between 230 million resources rich Soviet Union and 600 million west Europeans and Americans who controlled the world. Up to 1970, the Soviets had more success, but numbers and resources favored the West. It all ended in 1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved and the West enjoyed the victory.

Militarily, they are equal. Moreover, the possession of Atom Bomb by both sides equalized the score. For the newly independent Asians and Africans, the Soviet model was more attractive. They began to replicate that model to the detriment of the United States and Europe. They disliked it and found flaws with it. The U.S. and NATO used both written and electronic propaganda to convince people of Soviet influence states to rebel. The Russians did the same, but not very effectively.

After Soviet Union broke up in 1991, it was open season for the US and allies to convince newly independent, but economically not viable states to join them, and in ten years they joined them except a few including Ukraine.

The post 1991 Russia, objected to NATO and US to move too close to their border. The US ignored their objections and made a determined effort to enlist Ukraine into NATO. This US stupidity has resulted in the current war in Ukraine.

The preceding, I argued the Russian case. In fact US should have listened to what the Russians were saying. The Russian fault is an invasion of Ukraine. This is hard to condone. Again for Russia not to finish Ukraine issue today will leave it simmering for eternity. There are examples of issues still simmering like Kashmir in India, where business left unfinished has become unsolvable. So Russia, finish it today……
