Start of Production - Project 17A. Seven ships of Project 17A class of frigates are being indigenously constructed at M/s MDL, Mumbai (04 ships) and M/s GRSE, Kolkata (03 ships). Contract for these seven ships was signed on 20 Feb 15. These ships are being built using Integrated Construction methodology. P17A frigates would be fitted with advanced weapon and sensors suite and will have enhanced ‘sleek and stealth’ features. Steel cutting ceremony, commemorating the ‘Start of Production’ of First of Class (FOC) of P17A was held on 16 Feb 17.

So given the construction kicks off next year,we can expect these ships to join navy between 2025-27.

So by 2027 we will have 5 Rajput class destroyer+3 Delhi class destroyer+3 Kolkata class+4 Vishakhapatnam class 7 p-17a+3 Shivalik class+10 talwar class+3 brahmputra class+35 Corvettes.

Vice Admiral D M Deshpande, CWP&A, laid the keel of the first ship (yard-12651) of P17A class stealth frigates yesterday in the presence of Cmde Rakesh Anand, chairman & managing director, MDL; Sanjiv Sharma, director (finance); and senior officials of MDL and Indian Navy.

Construction of P17A ships differs in the very concept of frontline warship building by way of adoption of modern technology of ‘Integrated Construction (IC) methodology’, where the blocks are pre-outfitted with pipes, etc, to reduce the build period of warships.

P17A warships are follow-on warships of the Shivalik class stealth frigates. Seven frigates in this series will be constructed, of which four will be constructed in MDL and three in GRSE with MDL as the lead yard. The P17A class frigates will have enhanced stealth features. These ships are being built using indigenously developed steel and fitted with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor systems along with advanced Integrated Platform Management System.

I never understand why IN never give further orders of shivalik class,p-17A could easily be shivslik+MF-STAR, the ammount of time IN invested in this ship something makes me wonder that they might developing p-19 under disguise of 17A

Why are they ordering more Talwars at twice the price escalation? This is a better ship than that, more capability, domestically produced and probably cheaper.

Yes, a HUGE and costly oversight, a ten year gap between P-17 and P-17A is CRIMINAL but this is what you get when you place peicemeal order for 3-4 ships at a time.

Purely a political deal.......................We make a lot of it.

What benefit does India get? 80-90% of the cost of a P-17A for less than 70% of the capability.

WRT to Krivak/Talwar follow-on deal.

Like I mentioned before it was a political deal. Because India is compelled to maintain good relations with Russia because of our dependence on them for maintaining our existing systems and ongoing cooperations in few critical areas (ATV etc). And only way to keep that relationship going is by not making Russia feel like a drop-out, outright.

We need more hulls ASAP. The problem today is our warship building capacity is not as big as our requirements. Even private ones can't build bigger hulls than Corvettes. GSL will learn how to make frigates so it's a pretty good deal.

Doesn't the P 17A look like a miniature Kolkata Class? The 127 mm gun will come only in the last couple of ships (3-7) after deal is signed.

127/64 was shortlisted in 2015. This was before ban and was selected as BaE didn't want t sell to us. 76 mm is a stopgap.

What’s the logic in not having the 127mm guns for in the class? Couldn’t just order 4 more guns?

No clue. But FFGs dont even need 127mm guns. Maybe, the three 127mm guns will be put on some other ships the Delhi maybe? Or the maybe the LHDs to be built since they are in essence landing ships and need to have naval gunfire support weapons.

DAC approves procurement of thirteen 127 mm calibre guns for the Navy.


The DAC also approved procurement of thirteen 127 mm calibre guns for the Navy. These guns will be fitted on-board new construction ships for undertaking surface engagements including Naval Gunfire Support Operations. The guns will enable Naval ships to provide fire support and engagement of targets on the land. These guns have engagement range of 24 kilometres, which could be extended further by using Extended Range Gun Munitions (ERGM). These guns, a long outstanding requirement of the Navy would be procured from BAE Systems of the United States of America under the categorisation of Buy (Global) at an approximate cost of over Rs 3,000 crore.

Considering its 6700 tons, why is it classified as a frigate, when the lighter Delhi and Rajput classes are considered destroyers?
