last year... IN esat fleet's port call in Japan...

it's quite rare to see these inside pix taken by the civilians which was strictly restricted...I have been onboard one of P17 frigates during the IN's friend trip to Shanghai ,China, I know this 'rule' well....LOL...

BTW is that protective anti-flash clothing crew is wearing, earlier i saw this with french navy guys. Hope this will be standard operating procedure for all navy ships. Safety first, rest of things later, that should be policy.

Added later: Anti-flash gear is basic personal protective equipment to provide protection to the head, neck, face and hands from short-duration flame exposure and heat.

Indian Navy Orders MAN Medium Diesel Engines For Stealth Frigates

The Indian Navy has ordered MAN medium diesel engines for its Project 17A stealth frigates. The Indian Navy has ordered seven of the 149 m guided missile frigates, each equipped with two MAN 12V28/33D STC engines. Construction of the first ship is expected to start by early 2017 with handover to the Indian Navy by 2023. Four of the ships will be built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. in Mumbai, and three at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata, Marinelog reported Tuesday. MAN Diesel & Turbo will deliver engines and auxiliaries, commissioning, documentation, training and spare parts. The 28/33D STC delivers cutting- edge technology. Featuring robust and reliable engineering it has long overhaul intervals and a maintenance-friendly design that makes it possible to carry out all maintenance work up to major overhaul without removing the engine from the vessel — extending the operational window of the vessel and reducing maintenance efforts to a minimum, Man said in a statement. The 28/33D STC also offers a competitive specific fuel oil consumption. "It also represents a breakthrough in India for the MAN 28/33D STC. The vessels will be built with new modular construction technique to reduce construction time. Having built 96 ships including frigates and corvettes for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard since 1961, state-owned Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE, Hangar 5, Stand CE10-15), delivered its first export order, the offshore patrol vessel CGS Barracuda, to the Mauritius Coast Guard at the end of 2014. Following this success, GRSE is making a determined foray into the export market, focusing on the developing nations of the Far East, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
Its offers include fast attack craft, offshore and inshore patrol vessels, landing ships and tankers, for which the company claims keen interest from a number of countries.
GRSE has also diversified into pre-fabricated steel bridges, various deck machinery and assembly, and testing and overhaul of MTU diesel engines. Its initiatives taken to become a major shipbuilding company include upgrades in technology and infrastructure, improvements to processes, skills development, and increased focus on customer satisfaction.
GRSE acquired Raja Bagan Dockyard in July 2006 from CIWTC, to establish a dedicated facility for small ships. The shipyard has completed a modernisation project, which has created facilities comprising a 10,000-tonne dry dock, a 4,500-tonne inclined berth, and a large module hall with sliding roof for consolidation of mega-hull blocks. All three major facilities are co-located and covered by a Goliath Crane of 250-tonne capacity.
GRSE and Mazagon Dock Ltd will begin construction of seven Project 17A-class frigates for the Indian Navy from early 2017, for which the shipyards have been upgraded to incorporate modular construction techniques. The ships are expected to be launched by 2020.

LM2500 marine gas turbines to power Indian Navy's P17A stealth frigate
The Indian Navy's new P17A stealth frigates that are to start construction next year will be powered by LM2500 marine gas turbines, GE’s Marine Solutions announced.
The gas turbines will be provided by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Industrial and Marine Gas Turbine division, Bangalore, India under license from GE.
The Indian Navy will build seven next-generation P17A frigates at Mazagon Dock and GRSE. The new ships are a follow-on to the Shivalik-class P17 program.
“GE’s in-country partner HAL already has delivered 11 LM2500 gas turbines to the Indian Navy, including those that power three P17 frigates Shivalik, Satpura and Sahyadri launched in April 2003, June 2004, and May 2005, respectively," GE’s marine operations vice president Brien Bolsinger said.
HAL will assemble and test the LM2500 gas turbines prior to installation. Licensed by GE, HAL will also provide service and support including inspection, spare parts, maintenance and equipment overhauls for GE industrial and marine gas turbines.
The same gas turbines will also power the Indian Navy’s P-71 indigenous aircraft carrier that, GE noted, adding that delivery is expected by the end of 2018. Vikrant will be the Indian Navy’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier once it is completed. It was launched in August 2013.

Hmmm wish they would speed it up. Till 2022 Only the two P-28's and 4 P-15B's are the major surface warships joining the navy other than a few large patrol ships.

The result of the "lost decade" under UPA, warships have long lead-in times and require extensive pre-planning therefore an order in 2015-7 will only bear fruits 4-5 years down the line (ie 2020 onwards). UPA sat on P-17A for year after year, only when NDA came in did it finally get cleared (in late 2015).

Many more orders should have been placed in the past 5-6 years but as it stands there will be quite a significant gap in 2016-2022 when few large warships are flowing in other than the aforementioned vessels.

Hopefully by the middle of the next decade every year is seeing 4-5 large ship inductions.

+ 60 months to make a 7-8,000 ton beast like this is very reasonable, I don't expect any stremalining can be done. 2022 will be the earliest they can come, best case scenerio is that the IN orders more P-17As around 2020 so that there is uninterupted delivery post 2025.


These monsters will be able to take on ANYTHING the PLA(N) can throw at India, they shoould be churned out as fast as they can be made- 2/year is a bloody awesome induction rate for these ships! Hope the IN doesn't make the same mistake of throwing away the capital and expertise that went into making these ships.

I agree. Even USN came to its senses and is continuing with upgraded aegis class. Hopefully IN increases P-15B to 6 to replace the P-15's by 2030.


Hahahah ok I forgot the Vikrant but thats not a normal surface combatant, it is so much more.

“Commercial negotiations are in the final stages and should be concluded in the next two months. The technical negotiations have long been completed which also involves the Indian Navy,” a defence source said on Tuesday.
Although it should have been inked by this month, I'll gladly accept another quarter of a year as a margin.

The first ship is expected to be delivered three years after the contract is signed.
