Surface-to-surface Prahaar missile test fired

India successfully test fired indigenously developed surface-to-surface Prahaar missile on Thursday from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed the single stage missile fuelled by solid propellants. It has a range of 150 km and can carry conventional warheads.

Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Director General of DRDO, V K Saraswat, said that the new 150 km range Prahaar missile "is going to be an excellent weapon" and would fill the gap between existing unguided rocket systems like Pinaka, Smerch and 350 km-range Prithvi-2 ballistic missile.

The maiden flight test of 'Prahaar', a quick-reaction, short range tactical missile with a range of 150 km, was successfully conducted on Thursday morning from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chanidpur, Orissa.

The test was carried out at 8.15 a.m. from Launch Complex-III at ITR by missile scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which designed and developed the weapon system to replace unguided rockets of short range and meet the services requirement for such a battlefield weapon system.

DRDO sources told The HIndu soon after the launch that the mission was a success and met all the objectives. The single-stage, solid-fuelled missile zeroed in onto the pre-designated target in the Bay of Bengal with a high degree of accuracy. All the radars, electro-optical systems and telemetry stations, besides a ship located in the vicinity recorded the entire event.

The new system will be initially made operational in the Army. It will replace the unguided Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (40 km range) and Smerch (90 km) rocket systems.

Scientific Advisor Defence Minister, V.K. Saraswat, who witnessed the launch, said that the 7.8 metre long missile weighing 1.2 tonnes had high manoeuvrability and acceleration and could be quickly deployed in any terrain by a road mobile launcher. Each launcher will carry six missiles.

Designed to carry omni-directional warheads, Prahaar could be used for hitting both strategic and tactical targets.

Short-range 'Prahaar' missile successfully test fired

India Thursday successfully conducted the first test-fire of its indigenously developed short-range, quick reaction, tactical missile 'Prahaar' from the Integrated Test Range off Orissa coast.

"The test launch was fully successful as the surface-to-surface, sleek missile mounted on a road mobile launcher, roared into an overcast sky, seconds within its blast off," defence sources said.

The sophisticated missile was test fired from ITR's launch pad-3 at about 8:15 am leaving behind its trajectory in an orange and white ribbon of smoke, they said.

"The missile witnessed a smooth vertical take-off from the launch pad and vital parameters will be analysed after mission data is retrieved," said a Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist soon after the missile was test-fired.

The 150 km range 'Prahaar' is a single stage missile and is fuelled by solid propellants.

The uniqueness of the missile system is that "in one salvo, six missiles can be fired with multiple targets," said a scientist associated with this project.

This short range missile would be an 'excellent weapon' which would fill the gap between unguided multi-barrel rocket system 'Pinaka' with 40 km range and guided missiles like 'Prithvi', which can strike at 250 km to 350 km range.

In view of the scheduled missile test Thursday, the Balasore district administration had as a precautionary measure temporarily evacuated 3,220 persons residing within two km radius of the launch pad-3 in to nearby shelter centres.

Fishermen were also warned not to venture into the sea during the missile test time.

So now NASR is officially nailed. Bahi log apni kati naak wapas lagalo, test firing is a glorious success. Having said official i am still skeptical of import phobic Army. After all this project is still TD even though it is close to fully developed.

I read somewhere that Prahar is two stage missile.

As mentioned in the report, that this will replace Pinaka, I disagree with that, but to an extent this might be used to go along with Prithvi 150km variant for some time, and then replace it gradually. I think we will see Pinaka new versions ultimately replacing Smerch, with range up to 100-120km. And prahar getting in to role of Prithvi at extended range with newer versions.

Rahul, I think DDM was awash with news of it being 3 stage missile, but DRDO said from beginning that it is a single stage missile.

The speed comes, close to 2.5 mach approx right?

Prahaar will be cheap, as it is spin off from AAD as per reports, check the image below, one at the left side is Prahaar missile and on the right side AAD missile, Image at the left from Tarmak007 blog.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

as i have said earlier that AAD will have 6 missiles in launcher, same shall be case for Prahaar, as per DRDO. Even launcher is same. With economies of scale its cost will be cut down to great extend, as components are almost same.

Indian express says it will fill gap between 45km pinaka & prithvi.

Prahaar has extremely low preparation time for launch i.e just few minutes!

Determiming prahaar's flight trajectory will be highly complex & time consuming ergo enemy countermeasures will fail.

Congrats to DRDO Team. Lets get this on mass productin lines!

Prahaar justifies meaning of its name!

Hey NASR, how does Prahaar tastes now? :D
