'Prahaar' (to strike), a totally new quick-reaction, short-range tactical missile, which will fill the gap for such a battlefield weapon system in India's missile arsenal, is all set to be flight-tested on July 17.
This was stated here on Saturday by Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and Director General, Defence Research and Development Organisation, V.K. Saraswat after inaugurating a new facility of Analogic Controls India Ltd. (ACIL) that manufactures electronic systems for mission critical defence and space applications.
Talking to journalists, Dr. Saraswat said the 150 km-range missile would replace unguided rockets and "is going to be an excellent weapon." It would bridge the gap between Pinaka, a 40-km range multi-barrel rocket system, and the 350-km Prithvi-II, which had been converted into a strategic missile. Unguided rockets of 90-km range had also been imported from Russia.
Dr. Saraswat said that at present the services did not have a weapon such as Prahaar. The missile would be equipped with omni-directional warheads and could be used for hitting both tactical and strategic targets. The road-mobile system could be pulled out for quick deployment with each launcher carrying six missiles. "With different types of warheads, you can have different types of missiles from the same launcher," he added.
Stating that the DRDO-developed missile was cost-effective, Dr. Saraswat said that only a few would be required to cause devastation equivalent to that produced by several unguided rockets. Initially, the missile would be given to the Army and later to other services.
Replying to a question, he said India's longest range, surface-to-surface Agni-V missile would be flight-tested by the year-end as scheduled earlier.
Avinash Chander, Chief Controller, (Missile & Strategic Systems), DRDO, said the most "critical milestone' — the testing of three propulsion motors for the first, second and third stages of the missile — was completed.
Electronic systems
Earlier, inaugurating the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of ACIL, Dr. Saraswat called for forging public-private partnerships for producing electronic systems, which were being imported. The new Electronics Development Policy would aim to bridge the technological gap and seek large participation of the private sector.
He said a low cost laptop being produced by the DRDO in partnership with IIT, Jodhpur, was expected to be unveiled by December.
T.V. Prasad, Chairman, ACIL, said the company was developing more than 50 components for various projects and intended to move towards high-end products.

@ Manc The work is going on to increase the range of Pinaka rockets to 60 KM

It is being done by ARDE

IA and DRDO are definitely interested in an extended range Pinaka

In today's battle field you definitely need long range weapons or you come under attack immediately from the enemy

Actually I wanted to say that will this new short range missile [different from unguided missiles] will bring any greater advantage v/s pinaka which is also coming up with new long range version if I am not wrong.

The plan was to extend the range to 120 km like smerch. If this new missile has 150 km range, Guided, and 6 missiles per launcher means IA will surely choose this missile for Unguided, 120km range and 12 per launcher. Only disadvantage is missile/rockets per launcher!!

Yes this seems to have more advantage than pinaka expect number of rockets per launcher. So i think Pinaka LR is not needed.

There is un confirmed news coming out that Prahaar is a solid fuelled three stage missile with last two stage for warhead maneuvering.. thus giving great advantage over liquid fuelled Prithvi "¦

Looks like a reply to Nasr with far better range. Only difference might be that we will not out a tactical nuke on it.

So effectively Hatf-09 'NASR', which is called 'Nail in head' for 'Cold Start' has been already nailed. No wonder why Pakistanis are such losers.

I wonder if 'Prahar' is just downgraded 'Shourya'.

Great news!! They could transform the Prahaar into an extended version of Pinaka like they promised to make a 120 KM range MBRL. We then won't be needing to import any more Smerch as a whole kit and instead could import whatever tech is difficult to master. I hope Prahaar comes in fast for our forces, like its name.

So many people say that we are sitting on our haunches and not doing enough about our security. Like many surprises in the missile field in particular over the last few years like the sudden declaration of the Nirbhay, Shaurya, K15, K4 etc this too is a good positive surprise. It has been in the works for 4 years and no one knew about it. No one in the know leaked anything about it even when our "dear" neighbor tested Nasr just to show out own countrymen that they too are doing something. Just 15 days before launch, the missile is revealed.

What this means is a lot more defense related technology and weapons are being developed that no one is aware of it.

What all this secrecy also means is that the department is aware of serious espionage attempts.

New short-range missile test July-end | Deccan Chronicle

New short-range missile test July-end

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a new tactical short-range missile which has greater accuracy than the unguided missiles currently being used by the Indian Army.

Called Prahar, the missile has a range of 150 km. Six missiles can be loaded on to a single launcher, making it more cost-effective than others, said V.K. Saraswat, defence department secretary and DRDO director-general.

The Prahar system can tackle multiple targets and allows a mix of different kinds of missiles to be used from a single launcher. The missile will be tested for the first time at the end July, Mr Saraswat said.

Prahar will fill the gap between the Pinaka and the Russian-made Smerch, and the larger missiles.
The Pinaka, also produced by the DRDO, is a multiple-rocket launcher system. The missile has a maximum range of 40 km, and the system, mounted on a truck, can fire 12 rockets in 44 seconds. Smerch has a range of 90 km.

Being multi-directional and auto loading in nature, Prahar will be extremely useful in emergency situations. Its launch time is estimated to be two to three minutes and no preparation is required. Also, the technology being used on the Prahar is indigenously available and under manufacture in India. This helps in making Prahar cost effective, said Mr Saraswat.

The Prahar will come on a platform with excellent mobility, Mr Saraswat said. The DRDO is in talks with the Indian Army for the introduction for the missile. He said the Prahas has potential for use by the Indian Air Force as well.

It probably means the Maitri program will be cancelled. Pinaka LR may still be developed. Pinaka offers 40km sq devastation.

Maitri is a SR SAM LF, Pinaka offers 4 sq. km destruction.
With the greater range of this missile do you think we will still go for Maitri?? The seeker for this missile is probably from our Astra or Akash program?? Great job by DRDO in keeping this quiet and proving all the naysayers wrong. This will be added to the list of my missile favorites since it is 100% indigenous.
