DRDO's Nag missile fails in user trials

NEW DELHI: The long-delayed Nag anti-tank missile project of the DRDO has suffered yet another setback as its user trials held recently failed.

In the trials held in Rajasthan in presence of senior Lt Gen-rank officers from the Army and top DRDO officials, the modified carrier of the missile called NAMICA also under-performed, DRDO sources told PTI here.

In the trials held at the Mahajan firing range, four Nag missiles were fired of which only one could hit the target whereas the remaining failed to do so due to glitches in the equipment on-board the weapon, they said.

Army officials present at the test-firings were not happy with the performance of the missile and have asked the defence research agency to come better prepared for the trials to be held in the future, they said.

The missile has been under development as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) initiated in early 1980s and is now expected to take few more years to reach the induction stage.

Sources said the carrier of the Nag missile called NAMICA -- a modified Russian-origin BMP-II personnel carrier, also failed to satisfy the users in displaying its capabilities in water during the trials.

However, the NAMICA met the requirements of the user in terms of its cross-country capabilities, they said.

When contacted for his reaction, DRDO spokesperson Ravi Gupta said the trials were a "partial success".

"The Advanced Target Acquisition systems with both the Gunner and Commander have performed well," he claimed.

It was trial of Namica, if it is successful, that is what matters, Nag was already successfully tried and tested.

No need for any more tests, just induct it and if Army dont want it, give it to BSF, they need it.

An inquiry is needed to see what has happen.

Blame only DRDO here. No need to purchase something which is not ready yet.

The trails had to fail because DRDO does not carry a positive attitude. Instead of eradicating faults, the DODOs will carry on blaming Army for it... an old whipping boy for them...

This is the comment posted by Shiv arror blog.

Dr. Rajaram Gopalakutty. Head Systems Development, DRDO said...

Too hell with all with you who think DRDO is an underperformer and believe that we Indian Scientists can not create world class products.

Now let me inform you bunch of ill informed idiots that Nag mk1 works fine as per ASQR requirements.

Nag Mk2 is a more advanced, practically a 4th generation missile
. We were hoping to get the results as achieved with the limited range Mmw Italian seekers used on the missile. Further India is close to complete the development of our own high range high resolution mmw seekers which will be employed in the Nag by end of this year.
The vehicle has`nt failed as well. Its merely in advanced stages of development. Keeping weight low is neither easy nor a game of weeks. We will develop it fully by end of this year and whatever we have achieved is as expected from the limited parameters under tests.

I would like to tell you that these tests were developmental tests and the data acquired in this test will be used for further enhancement of the missile.

The missile is already made lighter, with internal construction ready for a new indian seeker. The namica drive vehicle is also redeveloped with better armour, better resolution sights, automatic target acquisition system, full network centric capability and improved drive and amphibious capability.

We will do it in time. And for you idiots who feel we are behind. Let me tell you that we have bridged the technology gap completely and we are developing cutting edge technology, latest generation equipments and are building them at a lower cost than imported materials with very high level of quality. Infact DRDO labs are at their peak of technology absorption in almost all areas and in next 10 years or so we will be head to head with US, west european development organisations. This is what we have achieved after paying a huge price and years.

So stop cribbing and earn us some money and pay your taxes fully...be honest and get the best service. Be smart enough to choose a good government and not hay chase a single party which you have done for 70 years. Do your job fine...and well do ours.

India will be a superpower by 2050.
APJ Abdul Kalam believes do and so does my team and entire drdo, isro and all government bodies and private sector companies now partnering with us.

I was one of the big hatters of DRDO and even abuse DRDO for the way they worked. Now after looking at a complete picture compared to past few years, they are tightening their belts and doing a fantastic job. I very much hope they continue to do the job better and I wish them best of luck for their future research and give our armed forces better equipment. I think they need better support and little encouragement from our part to boost their morale and help our country. Best of luck DRDO.

The induction of anti-tank Nag missile is likely to be delayed further, with three of the four missiles failing to hit the target and the missile's carrier, Namica, falling short of the Army's expectations during recent user trails, which were halted midway.
Sources in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) attributed the failure to lack of proper conditions for the missile's seeker to lock on and track the target. Several problems cropped up in the functioning of the automotive systems that were sourced from the Ordnance Factory. However, mobility trials for 300 km of the scheduled 1,000 km were conducted on the two carriers.

The second major hiccup surfaced when one of the two missiles failed to hit the target on July 28. While one, tested for a range of 2,500 metres, hit the bull's eye, the second failed to destroy a target 700 metres away owing to a problem in the seeker.

In the subsequent trials on August 1, two missiles missed the targets positioned at 1300 metres and 2,500 metres.

Disappointed with the failure, the Army wanted DRDO to further ruggedise the Namica and schedule retrials after six months.
The DRDO sources virtually faulted the Army for the failure of the two missiles. There was no adequate thermal contrast for the seeker to lock on and track the target before the missile was launched.

The Army was clearly told to ensure that the seeker locked on and tracked the target before the missile was fired. But, in both the instances, the missiles were fired before the seeker locked on the target.
The sources said that more than 50 trials had so far been conducted, and the Army carried out 20 of them. The missile failed only on four or five occasions.
