why ???????????????????...lol

the timeline for CV-16 LiaoNing to form battle effectiveness was well explained before...as the official statement said, it's five years... no less and we hope no more than that...4 years has almost gone...

the key for a CV and CVBG is the carrier-based aircraft combat force . after a long distance deployment to south sea, CV-16 usually stayed in the enclosed sea and was quite busy with training mission related to the shipboard fighter regiment in the past 2 years...she sailed every couple of months for the new batch pilots's qualification landing and taking-off sorties and 'old' pilots' consolidation sorties. she also accepted the builder's warranty docking repairing at the end of the 18 month's warranty period ..so far the shipboard regiment just got barely enough qualified J-15 pilots ..in the future , the CV would carry 24 J-15 and 12 other helicopters...

in the next year, we are expecting more experiment and training missions would be focused on the CVBG operation and cooperation with the escorting ships aside the intense aircraft landing/taking-off training missions as well, more harder night operations would be bigger challenger ahead...good luck.

but training would still be the important mission for Liaoning coz her sister ship would join in 2019 and obviously more pilots needed ..it's the destiny of PLAN's first carrier...

For lack of a better thread to post this on...

Liaoning's new sister ship has had her island lifted on deck:

Side-view comparison of CV16 and her unnamed sister ship: *Note that only half of the new ship's island has been fitted thus-far.

Yay! The Shandong is near completion!
Not for another 2 years. The shipyard will most probably launch her next year considering that there's still so much work to be done on the (just fitted) island and no doubt several kilometers of internal wiring.

Has the name "Shandong" been confirmed?

Right. Done as in having the island installed. Will be a few years for commissioning. But really really fast since we first heard about it last year! I was doing a gig in Shanghai at ChinaJoy when I even knew there was another carrier from one of the other girls who was from Dalian.
I guess not officially, I just took that from a wechat message which quoted a story. But yeah it doesn't make sense they would name it after a province after the 1st carrier was named after a city Liaoning (which is the capital of Shandong!)

With 65000 tones this ship hasn't utilized proper space, they have given away too many space for the sky-jump. Plus fighter selection for the carrier is not optimum, they will struggle in operating the giant Sukhois from the carrier.

But still their speed of production/manufacturing is appreciated.

China’s useless Aircraft Carrier Liaoning ‘Prepared for WAR’ - no match to U.S. Nuclear Carriers

China's first aircraft carrier, the CNS Liaoning (CV-16), is being praised by its political commissar from the Communist Party of China (CPC) as being "constantly prepared for war" despite the carrier being ruled as only fit for training purposes by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

In what appears to be a bout of political bravado, Li Dongyou, CPC political commissar of the Liaoning, said the Liaoning is "always prepared for war and our combat capacity also needs to be tested by war. At this moment, we are doing our best to promote our strength and use it to prevent war, and are prepared for actual combat at any time."

His excessive and probably unwarranted optimism flies in the face of past PLAN declarations the carrier is only suitable as a training vessel meant to give pilots of the PLAN Naval Air Force experience in ship-borne carrier operations and the ship's crew experience in operating an aircraft carrier under all conditions.

The 60,000 ton Liaoning remains beset by a host of problems, chief among which are its unreliable engines and underpowered aircraft-launching systems. Its engines give it a paltry top speed of only 20 knots or 37 km/h, which will be a problem when it tries to outrun or evade the faster destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers of the U.S. Navy.

U.S. Navy Nimitz-class supercarriers can tear through the waves at over 30 knots or 56 km/h while its escorting Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers are just as fast.

That's not to mention the high-speed maneuvering it will have to perform to evade salvoes of U.S. anti-ship missiles and torpedoes.

"As a combat platform, regarding technology and capability to execute missions, China still lags behind the US, but three high-ranking US officials who visited the Liaoning before all gave a positive evaluation on the management affairs on the carrier: officers and soldiers' daily lives and training are well organized and the equipment maintenance is fine" said Li.

The Liaoning can embark 36 aircraft: 24 Shenyang J-15 fighters; 6 Changhe Z-18F anti-submarine warfare helicopters; 4 Changhe Z-18J airborne early warning helicopters and 2 Harbin Z-9C rescue helicopters

A collage of pics from a CV16 deployment (FULL DISCLOSURE, THESE SEEM TO BE QUITE DATED AS J15 SERIAL NO. 108 WHICH WAS LOST IN AN ACCIDENT IS INCLUDED)

Correction:

The J15 that was lost earlier this year was serial no. 17, not 108 as I erroneously stated earlier. Apologies. So these pics are not as dated as I assumed.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

Which "under-powered aircraft-launching systems" are these? And where exactly did they get their 20kn figure from?

From what I know, Liaoning and her sister ship Kuznetsov are STOBAR carriers, ie they don't have "aircraft-launching systems" other than Tyre chokes and blast deflectors. Are they saying Liaoning has catapults? That would be news to many of us.

Another thing, Liaoning was purchased WITH HER ENGINES AND BOILERS INTACT. How exactly would they be more underpowered than the boilers in Kuznetsov, which is rated at 30kn+?
