The question is when Liaoning has 24 J-15s on deck -- like this, does it have more in the hangar?

Aircraft carriers are built in V shape, Liaoning's deck is already looking congested for the elephant walk.
There is no way the floor beneath deck can provide space for something more than 24 Fixed+ 6 Rotors.

I dont think so, during operations it wouldn't be on deck for making landings.
Right, the deck can only hold so many and still be operational and it seems the maximum would be 24 on the Liaoning and Shandong. But US carriers never hold all of their aircraft in their hangar and there are always aircraft parked on deck that gets rotated into the hangar as others are brought out. So the number of aircraft on deck is never the full complement.

The academic question is whether the PLAN also operates in the same way so that even when there are 24 J-15s on deck, there would still be a few more in the hangar.

This is a picture of the liaoning right on the way home after a tour.

The load on deck is in the "max" configuration for launch! Probably ready to send the air wing to their home bases as the carrier approaches Dalian for maintenance.
