A Henry K Article on East Pendulum. Unfortunately it's in French, but I'll provide a link and the resulting Google translation:

http://www.eastpendulum.com/nouvelle-campagne-entrainement-porte-avions-chinois

Apparently they made a lot of modification on the original Varyag propulsion.to improve reliability. The main change is They lowered the Steam operating pressure in high speed, and maybe compensated it by using larger steam turbine. They say it eliminate problem that still dogged Kutznetzov. There is video link that show excellent condition of the propulsion system here it is. I see a lot of J 15 on the runway. Did intrepid said 10?

A few days after welcoming the commander-in-chief of Russian naval forces to his home base, Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning has left for a new training campaign.

The duration and exact location of this trip was not formally communicated, but it can be assumed that the aircraft carrier left its base near Qingdao and returned northward before reaching Bohai Bay where it The habit of training.

Three notices issued by the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration, which indicate several zones of prohibition of navigation active from 6 to 18 November, seem to confirm this hypothesis.

Of these three areas, the northernmost one is only 15 kilometers from the Chinese carrier training center, where two new test tracks with catapult were recently inaugurated (see our file "The Chinese Navy is starting Catapulting tests').

It is unclear at this time whether the aircraft carrier Liaoning will also participate in the catapult test program, notably to test the landing of the J-15 catapultable version.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Army has published about 20 new photos on the recent activities of its only aircraft carrier. Through these photos, there are at least 8 J-15 aircraft on deck, and the crew continues to train on various subjects, such as sending and recovering aircraft, fast reloading Ammunition or the fight against fire ... etc.

It is rare for the Chinese Navy to broadcast pictures of Liaoning's weapons systems, but this time we can see not only the HW-10 HQ-10 missile and H / PJ-11 gun fire, But also the presence of anti-diver's rocket launchers on the Chinese aircraft carrier.

The national television channel CCTV-7 also broadcasted a report in its newspaper of 8 pm on the senior NCOs working in the machine compartments. This short film of 4 minutes showed us several unpublished images on the propulsion of this carrier of 50 000 tons.

When the ex-Varyag was sold to China, propulsion systems were the few parts of the ship that remained in a proper state. The Chinese engineers then analyzed all the systems and implemented more than 1,000 modifications in order to improve the stability, the reliability and the overall performance of the propulsion.

One of the major changes is to reduce the pressure in the boiler pipes, in order to prevent boilers from operating systematically in over-speed mode when the vessel exceeds 18 knots, a problem that was present on its sistership, the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

China’s first domestically built aircraft carrier will boast a more advanced power system and other designs that are improvements on the nation’s first carrier, Liaoning, which was brought from Ukraine and refurbished, military observers said on Tuesday.

They made their comments after state broadcaster CCTV ran video clips of Liaoning that showed the aircraft carrier is using the original Russian-designed propulsion system.

To mark the 4th anniversary of the successful maiden take-off and landing of the carrier-based J-15 on Liaoning later this month , CCTV interviewed sailors working on the platform. One segment showed Master Sergeant Zhang Hua, a electromechanical department officer in the machine room, igniting one of eight boilers that are part of the 1970s TB-12 engines.

The video that aired on Sunday showed how technical personnel work in the outdated machine room of the vessel.

It is the first time state media has been allowed to film the machine room of the carrier, and showed the four TB-12 engines, Russian-designed steam pipes, barometers and other identifiable equipment, which are all technologies of the former Soviet Union from the 1970s.

China finishes hull of first domestically built aircraft carrier

Xu Zengping, a middleman for the Chinese navy in buying the Liaoning from Ukraine in 1998, told the South China Morning Post in January last year that the four intact engines “had been perfectly grease-sealed” after being 70 per cent completed in 1992, and the footage appeared to confirm that.

“Shipbuilding authorities decided to keep the original propulsion system because it was intact, and matched the vessel’s design capacity of the time,” said Li Jie, a Beijing-based naval expert.

China is building its first domestically made aircraft carrier, which is a larger Type 001A vessel.

Displacement of the Liaoning is between 50,000 and 60,000 tonnes, while the 001A type is bigger, with maximum displacement of up to 70,000 tonnes and powered by steam turbines modified from the TB-12, Macau-based military observer Antony Wong Dong said.

“Steam turbines are a mature technology in China, which has been commonly used on its Type-051 destroyers since the 1970s, although there is still a big gap for China to catch up to the United States in use of their catapult take-off technology,” Wong said.

China plans aircraft carrier battlegroups to protect offshore interests

Li said the design of the 001A would include technological breakthroughs in its missile and radar systems and hangar deck, as well as software improvements, because Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Offshore Company had accumulated much experience its more than a decade spent rebuilding and developing the Liaoning.

“For example, the capacity of its propulsion system is able to match China’s home-made sophisticated radar and missile systems, while the new machine room is smaller, saving space for a bigger hangar,” Li said.

“The design of the missile launch and monitoring system will be well-integrated with the hangar deck, and a smaller control tower island on the deck will give more space for aircraft.”

China's aircraft carrier heads to Western Pacific, ready to enter Indian Ocean later

BEIJING: China's aircraft carrier, Liaoning, is heading towards the Western Pacific Ocean in what is its first major training exercise far away from the Chinese waters. Military officials in Japan and Taiwan have reported spotting the air craft carrier and a fleet of battleships crossing the Miyako Strait, a body of water between the Japanese islands of Miyako and Okinawa, heading into the Pacific.

A naval expert connected to the country's People's Liberation Army said that the aircraft carrier was getting ready to travel to wider regions including the Indian Ocean. "As a real aircraft carrier, it should at least go beyond the Second Island Chain (consisting of Guam, Iwo Jima, and the Mariana Islands) or reach the Indian Ocean before it officially acquires global capability," the government controlled Global Times quoted the expert surnamed Zhao as saying. It did not give his full name.

Japan confirmed there was no incursion in its waters, but tension mounted as China went about demonstrating the battle readiness of its only aircraft carrier four years after it was inaugurated. Japanese military issued a press release saying it has spotted three destroyers, three frigates and a supply ship along with the missile mounted aircraft carrier. But it confirmed that there was no incursion of Japanese waters.

The move came days after an unprecedented show of bravado by the Chinese navy seizing an undersea drone of the US navy in the South China Sea. It also happened within hours of the Obama administration approving plans to hold joint exercises with Taiwan. China regards Taiwan as its own territory, and grunts at any country having military relationship with it.

The new voyage of the aircraft carrier fleet is not aimed at provoking the US nor at reshaping maritime strategic structure, government controlled Global Times quoted a military expert by the surname of Zhao as saying. But if the fleet is able to enter areas where the US has core interests, the situation, when the US unilaterally imposes pressure on China, will change, he said.

The Liaoning conducted fire drills for the first time in the Bohai Sea near the Korean peninsula earlier this month. There are signs China's military has more surprises up its sleeve, which is why it is testing Washington's patience ahead of the presidency of Donald Trump next month. Trump recently angered Beijing questioning the one-China policy which is the basis of its claim over Taiwan.

The Chinese navy can only easily go through the First Island Chain (South Korea, Japan, Taiwan island and the Philippines). "I believe that the aircraft carrier battle group is trying to reach the Second Island Chain to test whether it can make a long distance cruise," Zhao said. Liaoning's offshore training can also show its ability to conduct overseas humanitarian missions such as disaster relief, and search and rescue missions involving air and marine accidents, he said.

Cross Post:

Not Liaoning (CV16) related but pictures have emerged of the CATOBAR version of the J15 launching off of one of the two catapult rigs at the Naval Aviation Training Facility in Xingcheng:

The Jet Blast Deflector is raised, suggesting that this is indeed a launch.

Its up in the air whether this is a steam or electromagnetic catapult. There seems to be one of each at Xingcheng airbase.

Chinese aircraft carrier sails into Hong Kong on maiden visit

China's first aircraft carrier sailed into Hong Kong waters on Friday, its latest show of growing military might at a time of rising regional tension.

Tourists and residents gathered to catch a glimpse of the massive carrier on its maiden visit to Hong Kong, part of celebrations marking 20 years since the handover of the city from British to Chinese rule.

The Liaoning was accompanied by two destroyers and other ships from its strike group, with jet fighters and helicopters visible on the flight deck alongside hundreds of crew dressed in white uniforms.

Anchoring off Lantau island in the harbour's outer reaches, the carrier was flanked by a protective cordon of marine police craft and a locally-based Chinese navy corvette.

Police boats sounded horns to prevent private vessels getting any closer than a few hundred meters of the Liaoning.

"The Liaoning's visit shows that China is a militarily superior country," said Jack Chan, a retired businessman, who was watching the aircraft carrier from an oceanfront park.

Thousands of Hong Kong residents queued for hours on Monday for just 2,000 tickets for access to the vessel this weekend. Many left empty handed.

China's first domestically built carrier was launched in April but is not yet operational.

Even though the former Russian naval ship is being used as a training vessel for China's rapidly modernising navy, its recent voyages through tense regional seas have been closely followed in Hong Kong, which is more used to hosting U.S. carriers and other foreign warships.

"Liaoning's visit definitely gives the central government a chance to display its military power. It's quite a positive and smart strategy to step up publicity overall," said Sean Moran, a tourist from the United States, as the ship passed on a blustery morning.

U.S. consulate officials told Reuters they had yet to be invited on board the Liaoning. The U.S. navy often hosts People's Liberation Army officers on ships visiting Hong Kong, sometimes flying Chinese military chiefs to aircraft carriers.

The Liaoning's most recent drills at the weekend included operations in the Taiwan Strait that were closely monitored by Taiwan's military given recent tensions with Beijing, which regards the island as a breakaway province.

With its Soviet-era takeoff ramp distinguishing it from the ordinary Hong Kong traffic of container ships and bulk cargo vessels, the 55,000-tonne Liaoning steamed down the congested East Lamma channel shortly after dawn.

Significantly smaller than the U.S. carriers that have long stopped in Hong Kong, the Liaoning started life as one of the Soviet Union's last carriers under construction, before being sold by Ukraine as a stripped down hulk to private Chinese interests in 1998.

The vessel was later refitted in a Chinese shipyard in what was seen by foreign military analysts as a key early test of China's naval modernisation.

The Liaoning began sea trials as China's first aircraft carrier in 2011 and has more recently conducted fully integrated drills with its complement of J-15 jet fighters and a variety of support ships.

This is as far as I know the first time the Chinese Navy has allowed civilians to tour the vessel. Tickets are available to permanent Hong Kong residents:

Good day
Is that clouds over sea?
Is that ship under fire?
NO!
It's China's aircraft carrier Liaoning is enveloped in heavy smoke from its own funnels!

ENJOY THE PIC

CHEERS!
You're shameless man. Did you even check if that's CV16 or are u being deliberately deceptive?

1. That's Admiral Kuznetsov., whose engines are famously faulty and famously prone to billowing massive amounts of black exhaust:

2. That pic of Kuznetsov cloaked in exhaust shows it's distinctive cyndrical d/e band air and surface radar, which is absent on Liaoning:

The J15 is a clear rip-off of the Soviet prototype yes. But those men should be proud of their work.

The T-10k-7 prototype was purchased from Ukraine in the late 90's. PURCHASED not stolen. Just as the Liaoning's Hull was purchased from Ukraine.

Thanks to the work of these men, the Chinese Navy has a reliable sea based fighter aircraft with an industrial supply chain securely based on the Chinese mainland. The J15 that developed from that old prototype is now being developed into a catobar variant.

I'm sure many Indian Navy Admirals wish they could say the same instead of launching RFI's every 5 years for foreign jets.

Hong Kong gov’t says it cannot regulate black smoke emitted by China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier

The Hong Kong government says it cannot regulate the emission of black smoke from China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier, despite public concerns over air pollution. :daru::daru:

The 305 metre-long Liaoning arrived in Hong Kong early Friday in a display of military might only days after a high-profile visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Concerns were raised after news outlets captured images of the carrier emitting black smoke.:daru::daru:

The secondhand Soviet ship was built nearly 30 years ago and commissioned in 2012. Local media reported that the Liaoning uses heavy fuel oil, rather than nuclear power like carriers in other countries.

Albert Lai, engineer and convener of think tank The Professional Commons, said early-model carriers such as the Liaoning typically use heavy fuel oil, which causes high soot emissions. He said heavy fuel oil is a popular fuel among oceangoing vessels owing to its low price.

He said the Liaoning’s five-day visit to Hong Kong will emit the same level of pollutants as 500,000 cars. o_O The number is based on his estimation that a ship of a similar size typically produces the same level of pollutants in a year as 50 million cars.

The Liaoning. Photo: Hong Kong Police.

Currently, the Air Pollution Control (Ocean Going Vessels) (Fuel at Berth) Regulation requires all marine vessels use fuel with low sulphur at berth. However, the regulation does not cover military vessels.

The Environmental Protection Department told HKFP: “When we formulated the Regulation, we referenced the international practice that exempts warships or other vessels on military service.”

Photo: Apple Daily screenshot.

“The fuel used by the Liaoning at berth in Hong Kong is exempted from the Regulation.”

However, Lai told Post 852 that the department could still have suggested that the Liaoning switch its fuel, take measures to reduce pollution, or berth at a remote area in order to reduce the impact of air pollution on Hong Kong.

Photo: Carrie Lam, via Facebook.

Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui said the Chinese government should not be excused from damaging the environment. He asked the Environmental Protection Department to change the law so that no exemption would be given to military vessels.
