With the IAF set to receive its first Rafales next month, and France to reiterate its offer of 36 more, my report from France in 2017 on the specific kind of Rafale India is getting

First planes have already been doing test flights since March. Tests will continue concurrently while deliveries are made. Tests will also need to be done in Indian conditions before declaration of operational acceptance. Our media usually muddles info when publishing it so creating confusion

Every media houses even our few reputed defence journalist (supposedly reputed) have been saying first rafale will touch indian shores after completing 1500 hours of intial testing in france itself.. nd coming to the first plane ur talking about testing since march.. is it the 17 yr old testbed (to test ISE) aircraft or the rafale manufactred for india... Their's a lot of confusion surrounding first rafale testing.. in 2018 when few of defence journals erroneously qouted that first indian rafale (RB008) is being tested.. it was a case of shabby reporting.. instead the rafale going testing was a 17 yr old test aircraft modified to act as Testbed of ISE upgrades...

Rafales Ko BABAJI ka Bhi Ashirwad Mil Gaya... :)

I had always maintained 200+ Rafales are coming. Now it's getting clearer by the day. If Rafale deal gets through, it also means Kaveri engine is ready too...:)

Rafale is done. Now it's upto HAL to prove their mettle and bring Mk1A asap so dat they can work on MWF.

200+ for IAF alone. 57 Rafales for Navy will come after 2025 more likely near 2030 when ins vishal will be near completion. For Vikrant Rafales won't fit in lifts, only option is mig29k or mig35k, even f18 with folding wings won't fit unless we change to bigger lifts.
Baba is talking about 114. Even they will take time. If deal is signed early 2020 still manufacturing will only be established by 2023-24. If deal is for 114 rafale we can't just assemble them .they will have to be manufactured here with heavy offsets.

Any evidence that DRAL can assemble Rafale?

Why does India need additional fly away Rafales when India can get made in India Rafale in MMRCA2? Baba stated only 114 additional planes (total 150) but you make it 200+. Any basis of this?

Jaguar engine replacement is finished and IAF will retire jaguars completely by 2028 which was decided to retire after 2035. Now 6 sqda jaguars too will go along with 6 sqna of mig21s, 2sqd of mig27 and then 3sqdn of mig29 by 2030. Add Navy requirements and Rafales will easily cross more than 200.
DRAL plant has started making falcon jets and same assembly line can be used to make Rafales.

If they knew it was going to be so expensive to re-engine them then why did they start an expensive upgrade process that is going to have such a short life line? We retired our Jags in 2005 and stopped making the engines around then, that is plenty of time to make contingency plans.
