I just hope that something like what happened to Argentina's Mirages during the fakland wars won't happen to you.

Resuming it in one sentence what happened then: the French govermerment( Mitterand) under the treath from Tatcher of using atomics in the war against the argentinian was "morally forced" to give away to the british the codes of their excocet missiles equipped on their Mirages (that were dangerous treaths to british fleet) and if i remember correctly electronic countermeasures.
yeah we are aware about that, that is why we have SU 30 MKIs and Russian weapons.

The RAFALE further improves its versatility

The RAFALE has successfully completed its first test flights in a new heavily-armed configuration, comprising six air-to-ground precision AASM Hammer missiles, four medium and long range air-to-air missiles from the MICA family, two very long range METEOR missiles, as well as three 2,000 liter fuel tanks.

This preliminary work, self-funded by Dassault Aviation are conducted in collaboration with the Direction Générale de l'Armement (the French Defense Procurement Agency) and will eventually lead to a complete clearance of the flight envelope.

By increasing the capabilities of its fourteen hard points, including eight under the wings, the RAFALE is the only fighter aircraft in the world capable of carrying 1.5 times its own weight. Its "omnirole" capability responds to the needs of countries requiring, at a controlled cost, an operational and versatile tool capable of fulfilling all missions more effectively, whilst mobilizing fewer resources. Two RAFALE aircraft represent the same potential as six MIRAGE 2000 class aircraft.

This new configuration, unmatched in the versatility and firepower it represents, has been made possible thanks to the open architecture of the aircraft designed from the outset to perform all of the missions previously assigned to seven different types of aircraft in France. As a veritable "force booster", the RAFALE is a tool for rationalizing armies.

This new development, which combines great autonomy with the versatility of the weapons system, demonstrates the power and operational superiority of the RAFALE, which already has a unique range of configurations, including the unique ability to strike deeply, with two Scalp cruise missiles and three 2,000 liter fuel tanks, as used by the French armed forces during Operation Harmattan in Libya in 2011.

Thanks to this new technical performance, Dassault Aviation is again demonstrating, a few days after being awarded the contract for the F3-R standard by the French Minister for Defense, Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, that the RAFALE is part of a continuous improvement process to meet users' requirements.

About the RAFALE

The only totally "omnirole" aircraft in the world, able to operate from a land base or an aircraft carrier, capable of carrying 1.5 times its weight in weapons and fuel, the RAFALE has been designed to perform the full spectrum of combat aircraft missions:

* Interception and air-to-air combat using a 30-mm gun, Mica IR/EM missiles and Meteor missiles (as of 2018).
* Close air support using a 30-mm gun, GBU-12/24 laser-guided bombs, AASM and GBU-49 GPS-guided bombs (used in Afghanistan, Libya and Mali).
* Deep strike using Scalp-Storm Shadow cruise missiles (used in Libya).
* Maritime strike using the Exocet AM39 Block 2 missile and other air-to-surface weapons.
* Real-time tactical and strategic reconnaissance using the Areos pod (used in Afghanistan, Libya and Mali).
* Buddy-buddy in-flight refueling
* Nuclear deterrence using the ASMP-A missile.

The RAFALE entered service with the French Navy in 2004 and with the French Air Force in 2006, gradually replacing the seven types of previous-generation combat aircraft. Of the 180 aircraft ordered by France to date, 126 have been delivered. The RAFALE fleet currently totals almost 120,000 flight hours, including 16,000 in operations. Since mid-2013, production RAFALE aircraft are equipped with an active array RBE2 AESA radar from Thales.

About Dassault Aviation

With more than 8,000 military and civil aircraft delivered to 83 countries over the past 60 years, and having logged nearly 28 million flight hours to date, Dassault Aviation can offer recognized know-how and experience in the design, development, sale and support of all types of aircraft, from the RAFALE fighter to the FALCON range of high-end business jets, as well as military unmanned air systems. In 2012, Dassault Aviation reported revenues of €3.94 billion, with around 11,600 employees.

This might have been discussed earlier, if it has, could someone please point me to the posts?

Am I wrong in thinking that for MMRCA, India should have gone for MiG-35?

I know about the 'single vendor' issue. But apart from that, it makes perfect sense.

Buy 126 MiG-35 for the cost of 60 Rafales. Channel the huge money saved to development of AMCA as well as avoid downgrading the order of FGFA (200+ to 144), if not increasing the order.

Since MiG-35 is based on the MiG-29K airframe, it could also become the main future carrier based fighter for IN, after a few carrier specific modifications. Also, commonality of parts between MiG-35, MiG-29K & MiG-29UPG could be a major advantage for us.

IAF has no love lost for Migs. as far as 2004 they wanted to buy 124 mirage-2000s , which has now been modified as MMRCA circus.

Mig-35 has no major buyer till today.

I am somehow getting the dread day by day that Rafale deal is also one of MoD's scams.

Brush Up Your Rafale Knowledge - Soon To Be India's Latest Aircraft Purchase

With the news of the contract for this mammoth deal expected soon, now is a good time to know, if you haven't, about this epitome of the very best in European Technology - a topical conversation, it'd make.

An agreement, at least, involving the 18 Rafale fighter aircrafts, that France would directly supply, is expected to be signed before the present UPA Govt demits office very soon. By doing so, it would be shielding this acquisition process from the highly undesirable proposition of being started all over again, were the succeeding Govt contemplated going down that road. With the Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct coming into effect immediately upon announcements of polling dates, any agreement, therefore, would have to be signed before that.

dna exclusive: 100% price escalation on Rafale fighter aircraft to Rs 1.75 lakh crore likely to dent IAF's strike capability

India's biggest deal of procuring 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) for $18 billion (Rs90,000 crore) has hit rough weather. Two years after French aircraft maker Dassault Aviation bagged the deal for its Rafale fighter jets on account of being the lowest bidder, its cost has now shot up by 100 per cent.

In January 2012, when Rafale was declared the winner, its price was quoted between $60-65 million (Rs373-Rs400 crore). A top defence ministry official said the price of a fighter jet made by Dassault could now cost $120 million (Rs746 crore). The second bidder, Eurofighter, had quoted $80-85 million (Rs497-Rs528 crore).

The price hike would mean that the deal would cost India nothing less than $28-30 billion (Rs1.75 lakh crore-Rs1.86 lakh crore)," said an Indian Air Force (IAF) official, who is privy to discussions of the cost negotiation committee.

The defence ministry headed by AK Antony has developed cold feet after the cost doubled compared to the original estimate. With the general elections just months away, Antony is unsure about the fate of the deal, a defence ministry official said. "As the negotiations continue, the cost is spiralling out of hand. It is a major worry," he said.

An IAF official said that in 2007, when the tender was floated, the cost of the programme was $12 billion (Rs42,000 crore). When the lowest bidder was declared in January 2012, the cost of the deal shot up to $18 billion (Rs90,000 crore).

Eighteen of the 126 planes will be purchased directly from Dassault, while Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will manufacture the other 108 under a licence, at an upcoming facility in Bangalore.

The IAF, which is fighting its depleting combat strength, was banking on Rafale as this was going to be the force's leading fighter plane for the next four decades. "With chances of the MMRCA deal getting inked appearing dim, there seems to be no

solution to the immediate problem of shrinking squadron numbers as existing aircraft are forced into retirement," said another IAF official.

The air force is seeking to replace its ageing MiG-21s with a modern fighter and MMRCA fits between India's high-end Sukhoi-30MKIs and its low-end Tejas LCA lightweight fighter. The IAF has a sanctioned strength of 45 fighter jet squadrons. However, it only has 30 squadrons operational as old aircraft have been retired.

what the hell? Order 3 more (60)suk3 squadron and push the lca 2.
If we going to spend 30bn on rafale. It is criminal. Its more like 2/3rd of entire defence budget.

Better scrap the deal and go for Mig-29 K derivatives or putting a AESA rader on it... we will get 2.5 Mig-29 at a price of single Rafale...

There is no gurantee that India will get full TOT after spending so much money...
