BBC News - French Rafale jet beats Eurofighter in $10bn India deal
.
.

.
Dassault Aviation will now enter final negotiations
before signing the deal that will supply India's air
force with 126 Rafale aircraft.
Correspondents say this is one of the world's
biggest defence deals and is a major setback for
rival bidder, the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Eurofighter lost out in December on an $8bn deal
to supply jets to Japan.
Shares in Dassault Aviation rocketed more than
20% as the latest news broke.
.

Both Germany and the UK invested a lot of time in pushing the Typhoon, so this will hurt"

.
'Purely cost'
Officials at the British High Commission in Delhi said they were disappointed with the decision and would now study the details.
They added: "It was expressly said this was about the cost of the contract, not a reflection on the health of bilateral relations between India and the countries."
The officials said they "genuinely believed the [Eurofighter] Typhoon offered the best capability now and in the future".
They also said it was "not beyond imagination" that India might decide the Rafale was not the right option as it continued the process.
French Minister of State for Foreign Trade Pierre Lellouche welcomed the deal, the first foreign order for the Rafale multi-role jet.
He said: "This is good news and France needs good news right now... It is good news for our aerospace industry and for our defence industry."
Mr Lellouche also complained that "political pressure applied by our competitor does not make things very easy". James Hardy, Asia Pacific specialist at IHS Jane's Defence Weekly, said this was a "big loss for Eurofighter".
"The Typhoon was widely tipped to be the favourite and had major political support from the big beasts of the Eurofighter nations. Both Germany and the UK invested a lot of time in pushing the Typhoon, so this will hurt."
Indian Defence Minister AK Antony had earlier cautioned that this remained a "long process" and that no deal would be signed before the end of March.
One Indian defence ministry source confirmed to Reuters that the Rafale had been "much cheaper unit-wise", adding: "Moreover, the Indian air force, which is well-equipped with French fighters, is favouring the French."
The Typhoon is built by the German and Spanish branches of European aerospace giant EADS, Britain's BAE Systems and Italy's Finmeccanica.
Four other bidders had dropped out in the lengthy Indian selection process.
India is the biggest arms importer among emerging nations.

The stealthy missile has a range in excess of 250 kilometres (155 mi), is powered by a turbojet at Mach 0.8 and can be carried by Dassault Mirage 2000 and Dassault Rafale aircraft. The BROACH warhead features an initial penetrating charge to clear soil or enter a bunker, then a variable delay fuze to control detonation of the main warhead. The missile weighs about 1,300 kilograms (2,866 lb), has a maximum body diameter of 48 centimetres (1.6 ft) and a wingspan of 3 metres (9.8 ft). Intended targets are command, control and communications; airfields; ports and power stations; AMS/ammunition storage; ships/submarines in port; bridges and other high-value strategic targets.

It is a fire and forget missile, programmed before launch. Once launched, the missile cannot be controlled, its target information changed or be self-destructed. Mission planners programme the missile with the target air defences and target. The missile follows a path semi-autonomously, on a low flight path guided by GPS and terrain matching to the area of the target.

Close to the target, the missile climbs and then bunts into a dive. Climbing to altitude is intended to achieve the best probability of target identification and penetration. During the bunt, the nose cone is jettisoned to allow a high resolution infrared camera to observe the target area. The missile then tries to locate its target based upon its targeting information. If it can not, and there is a high risk of collateral damage, it will fly to a crash point instead of risking inaccuracy.

AASM Armement Air-Sol Modulaire (Air-to-Ground Modular Weapon)

The Armement Air-Sol Modulaire (Air-to-Ground Modular Weapon) (AASM) is a French Precision-Guided Munition developed by Sagem Défense Sécurité. AASM comprises a frontal guidance kit and a rear-mounted range extension kit matched to a dumb bomb. The weapon is modular because it can integrate different types of guidance units and different types of bombs.

The basic version features a 250-kilogram (550 lb) bomb plus hybrid inertial navigation system (INS) / Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance. Other variants add imaging infrared (IIR) or semi-active laser homing (SALH) to increase accuracy; there are also versions with 125-kilogram (280 lb) or 1,000-kilogram (2,200 lb) bomb bodies.

It entered service in 2007 with the French Air Force and Naval Aviation, from Rafale and Mirage 2000.

Operational-range: 15 km (9 mi) at very low altitude, 55 km (34 mi) at high altitude

MICA (missile)

The MBDA MICA (Missile d'interception et de combat aérien, "Interception and Aerial Combat Missile") is an anti-air multi-target, all weather, fire-and-forget short and medium-range missile system.

There are two MICA variants; MICA RF has an active radar homing seeker and MICA IR has an imaging infra-red homing seeker. Both seekers are designed to filter out counter-measures such as chaff and decoy flares. A thrust vector control unit fitted to the rocket motor increases the missile's agility. It is capable of lock-on after launch (LOAL) which means it is capable of engaging targets outside its seeker's acquisition range. Mounted on the Rafale, the MICA IR can provide IR imagery to the central data processing system, thus acting as an extra sensor

Indian Air Force also ordered 490 MICA IR and MICA EM missiles for its upgraded mirage 2000h multi role fighters. More will be for Rafale..

Operational-range : from 500 m to 80 km
Flight altitude: up to 11,000 m
Speed : Mach 4
Guidance-system ; Inertial guidance-mica-EM: Active radar homing,MICA-IR: Imaging Infrared homing

UPDATE 2-No India jet fighter deal before end March-minister

* Defence min source: Rafale jet is cheaper, preferred

* Lowest bid to be announced soon: sources

* Tender could be extended for 80 additional jets

India will not sign a multi-billion dollar contract to buy European fighter jets before the fiscal year ends in March, the defence minister said on Tuesday, about a deal to revamp ageing weapons in line with the country's rising global influence.

"Not this financial year," Defence Minister A.K. Antony told Reuters in reply to a question about when the deal that has been in the works since 2007 would be signed.

However, India will "soon" announce the lowest bidder for the tender for 126 jets worth up to $15 billion, two government sources with knowledge of the deal told Reuters.

One of the sources said France's Rafale jet was the likely winner, adding that the defence ministry was now considering buying another 80 or so jets and could invite bidders excluded from the current process to take part.

Hmmm - is that for the EF2000 and F-35 as a second line of defense?

significant transfers of technology guaranteed ???
We want Total transfer of technology and guarantee to that effect. .
Well saya sir, use your criminal (pun intended) mind,

We have Dhruv flying with Turbocema engines (French Company)

We have selected Mirage upgrade with French weapon

We are going with Rafale, and in negotiation with Snecma for the help in Kaveri (I believe we will see the signing news coming soon now).
French have said previosuly that if Rafale is selected, both LCA and Rafale can operate the same engine.

We have Scorpene deal going on, where French can help putting a small nuclear reactor.

If we correlate all these bits and pieces, I feel GoI is looking for independence in terms of engine technology (both for rotary and winged birds), also some help in nuclear technology and possibly for seekers to make our own missile (Astra).
PS: There was news about India assembling Russian Agat seeker also, but I feel we are interested in dual role MICA.

Those lurking users might be Pakis who can't join ... who knows... on a famous Paki forum they are having mad fits about how to counter this MMRCA threat....some so called seniors(one has lot of wind inside him) are thinking of deploying 4 JF-17 to 1 Rafel... its funny... its like four .303 rifles facing one AK-47 where the ultimate cost is 3 times for .303
