Srinagar: In what appears to be a fresh strategy to disrupt life in Kashmir and destroy critical infrastructure, militants have started targeting electricity transmission towers in the Valley. On Thursday evening, during a search operation following a jihadist attack on non-local truckers in Chitragam area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, security personnel were surprised to find two sections of a 400MW strategic power transmission line cut at the base.

The joint forces of Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force were combing through the village following the strike in which two truckers were killed and one injured. They found that a few metres off the road where the attack had taken place, a transmission tower had been damaged.

Gas cutters had been used to sever the limbs of the tower, a police official who was part of the search operation told News18.

“We had to put people on the job who protected the tower for the night. Otherwise, it could have collapsed,” the official said.

Had the tower toppled over, it could have been disastrous, officials in J&K Police and civil administration told News18.

“There would have been major fault in the electricity infrastructure of Kashmir, which could have led to loss of power, lives and blackout spreading to many parts of the Valley,” an official in the state power department said.

The 400MW Kishanpur-Wagoora transmission line distributes electricity to many parts of the Valley and is maintained by the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.

Counterinsurgency officials in Kashmir are concerned by what appears to be a new strategy from jihadi groups in the Valley.

“The terrorists managed to cut two limbs of this massive tower with gas cutters, but it appears they later ran out of gas and couldn’t cut the other two limbs,” an official who was at the spot where the incident occurred told News18.

Officials say fortunately the tower number 348, which was targeted, is a suspension tower.

“The suspension tower stands between two towers, and is meant to be for the support of other structures,” said one of them.

The counterinsurgency grid is looking for a fresh approach to take on these tactics.

“This is going to be a major challenge. There are hundreds of such towers in Kashmir which can become easy targets,” a police official said. “We haven’t seen such kind of targeting previously in the history of Kashmir militancy. Earlier, mobile phone towers were targeted, though not in this way. But electricity transmission towers have never been damaged.”

The transmission tower is just metres away from the spot where the truckers were killed and their apple-laden vehicles set ablaze after suspected terrorists fired on them indiscriminately on Thursday evening. This was the fourth such incident in which non-Kashmiris were purportedly attacked in the past 15 days in the southern region of the Valley.

The trucks, according to J&K Police officials, were passing through Chitragam village when they were attacked by the gunmen, leaving the people on board the two vehicles injured. Two among them, police officials told News18, succumbed to their injuries at the spot while another one was shifted to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar in critical condition.

Those killed were identified as Ilyas Khan, driver of the truck, and its conductor Zahid Khan. Both were in their mid-thirties and hailed from Alwar, Rajasthan. The third, another driver, who sustained bullet injuries and was identified as Jeewan Kumar from Hoshiarpur in Punjab, is being treated at the hospital in Srinagar.

There has been a rash of attacks on non-locals in the Valley after the central government stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution and divided the state into two union territories on August 5.

In the first such incident, militants killed a truck driver in Shirmal area of Shopian on October 14. A few hours later, a labourer working at a brick kiln was killed in Pulwama district. Shortly after, two apple traders were targeted in which one died on the spot and another was critically wounded.

These attacks, according to reports, is a reaction of militants against New Delhi’s decision to abrogate the special status of the strife-torn state.

The apple industry, which is considered the backbone of Kashmir’s economy and ensures livelihood for half of the 8 million population, is already suffering huge losses due to the restive situation in the Valley since August 5.
And who's going to clap after cutting the power? Kashmiri Muslims? These inbred piglets are becoming desperate like opposition in India that they are attacking their own cause/country. We should let them succeed couple of times so that valley can see right through these paki piglets.

The reason seems to be Kashmiris have adapted after article 370. Even though there is internet shutdown, TV and cable networks are working. They want to cut all convenience of modern lifestyle and bring people out of their homes to do stone pelting and get some killed so that paki can cry in front of the world.

Such double faced bastards are these Salwar kamiz making their own Muslim brethren as sacrificial lambs.

Do not count on it. When was the last time Indians or those of Indian extraction "amassed" in the streets of London or elsewhere in UK?

And no! Cricket matches do not count.
Indian embassy can pay Pakis and Bangladeshis in UK to amass and ransack the streets of London. Ethnic composition of the crowd is not important, ransacking is important. :troll:

Abrogation of article 370 just demoted the terrorists into arsonist and petty murderers.

This Dalla is a Pakistani think Tank. He takes credit cards for his services.

He mislead ABV into starting peace talk when the Pakistani army and ISI were capturing Kargil peaks.

He does so many in-depth analyses and claim to be reading between all the lines but expect Indians not to judge him when he gives Pakistanis tips.

True that. Pakiland is the first country in the world where PMs makes life sacrifice while army is busy running business. IK is next because someone has to be responsible for Kashmir mess and economic hardships.

A few counter examples:

Ukraine Vs Russia
Cuba Vs US
South Korea vs China
Yemen vs Saudi Arabia

And let’s not forget nuke factor..

Degrading Pakistan’s ability to wage jihadi war against India in the future is a different conversation. Not to be confused with breakup of Pakistan.
Very poor examples mate. They just prove my point rather than countering it.

Ukraine - Crimea taken by Russia, Donbass can be taken any time Russia wants. Ukraine's new president is looking to patch-up with Putin to stop the war and join the Russian block again.

Yemen - Half the country under a Saudi puppet. All infra and economy destroyed,

South Korea - Biggest hint is in the name since North Korea is china's lapdog.

Cuba - Better example but it is a very homogeneous white catholic population. No where near the fault lines that the above three countries (and porkis) have.

Above points apart, the biggest difference is - None of these countries are occupying the territory of the bigger country like porkis are doing.

I repeat again, once India is a 10trn+ economy it can exploit the fault lines of porki society like no other time in the past. PTM, BLA, Shias, Sindhis, Gilgitis, Ahmediyas - porkis have so many fault lines that there is no way they can survive.

Yup, bad examples sure. But difficult to find examples which are a perfect match.

Assuming we are still talking about 2035 scenario.

Point remains that small countries can indeed be pain in the ass for larger neighbours if they want to, with financiers and arms suppliers supporting Pakistan from the shadows the conflict can be stretched quite a bit irrespective of India’s economy.

My original point remains that breakup of Pakistan is not that simple, and it won’t break up on its own.

I'm aware that this is not a popular view here but Shekhar Gupta is plenty smart and is not an apologiser for Pakistan. People have different views and it's not wise to always dismiss their opinion or call them.names. One needs to understand multiple thoughts and views. Prime Ministers from PVN down have sought his counsel at different times and while that doesnt mean he isn't wrong on some things, he certainly isn't anti India. His inputs were taken by our FM's late father K.Subramanyam when he was formulating the Kargil enquiry and that includes off record inputs which weren't put in the public report.

Labeling everyone eho has a different opinion as anti national is not helpful.

Excellent summary and analysis of the recent congressional hearing on south Asia.
As i keep saying there is much more to this hearing than people are realising, and amount of coverup everyone is doing is appalling.

I see this hearing is another inflection point in future indo-US relationship. The indophobia that just got legitimised in US politics, will haunt future generations of Indians living both in India as well as US.

Not doing anything is not a solution in any this case.

Do you really think I need sermons on how I should allow different opinions?

If you want to defend Shekhar Gupta go and defend him with facts.

Regards.

In that case, would you be satisfied if I label coupta as being part of the group within India who always advices that India should show a large heart and ignore everything that’s being said & done which is not in India’s interest.

Case in point:

1) he did an episode on the hunger index report, he failed to inform us that the report is sponsored by German church.

2) he did an episode on US hearings, he failed to mention the line of questioning. He failed to emphasise that Kashmiri pundits were not even discussed.

Having a ideological view is ok, but that ideological view should be beneficial to India too. You review his work over the decades, if India is at a receiving end in any issue his advice would be to just take the beating and don’t complain.

Of course not on its own.

My point is that sooner or later India will have the budgetary superiority to create / flame conflicts in porkistan with impunity. Once that starts it will only be a matter of time till India moves in and takes back its lands.

The nukes are a concern right now sure... but nothing a good old civil war cant solve.

Yes. The signs are very clear.

Americans are already preparing a noose the size of India's neck to be used in a post China world.

Mine was a general comment and while I did use your post to make my point, it need not be taken as a reply to you or god forbid, a sermon. :)

That's an opinion you would be well within your rights to hold, without it degenerating into extreme name calling. I wouldn't always agree with you but your view as stated would not be without merit in individual cases.
