I was just thinking about how long it took IAF & IA to decide upon SAM Systems when they knew Akash would be delayed. SPYDER & Tunguska was for short range and nothing was thought or purchased for medium & long range. only recently there was this talk of Barak-2 Airforce version.
We give so much importance to maintain squadron levels, getting modern fighters and so less concern for replacing obsolete russian SAM Systems? why?
After looking at Gulf war, US making a mincemeat of Russian origin SAM Systems, Still we continued to use SA-3, SA-6 with few upgrades here and there for two decades as our primary SAM System, and even after 1999 Kargil.
What about nuclear facilities (trombay), petroleum storage (gujarat), metropolis? how susceptible to surprise strike like Israel made on Osirak. granted Israel is probably the most aggressive in the world but i wouldn't underestimate the F-16As int the hands PAF Pilots, which they had since last twenty years. Its possible for them to fly low, gaps in radar coverage to reach the targets, our alerted fighters may be able to intercept them after they neutralized the targets but then the damage has been done.
at this time, a good combination of point defence SAM and Medium Range/Long Range would be good solution, atleast protecting highly sensitive locations like nuclear installations.
India does has a very large airspace, it may be nearly impossible to cover every single sqkm with excellent radar coverage. Granted we have purchased new radars from Israel, really good ones like Greenpine and those aerostat ones. But enemy will always be looking to avoid them and penetrate the airspace which is not well covered by these radars and at lower altitudes.
IN Destroyers/Frigates have much better protection with Barak & Shitl compared to Soviet era SA-3/SA-6.
272 Su-30MKI, 126 Rafales are very much state of art and one of the best in their category but whats the use if our air defence fails to alert them within time. Its left to SAM Systems to defend. Atleast they will deter the enemy and make them think twice before targeting strategic locations.
