INDIA EQUIPS ITSELF WITH ISRAELI AIR DEFENSE SYSTEMS

India has become the largest buyer of Israeli arms. And it intends to increase the volumes and scope of procurement in the military-technical cooperation sector with Tel Aviv.

Last month, the Indian government decided to purchase the Israeli Spike anti-tank systems and establish their licensed production in India. The Indian armed forces were in favor of the Israeli missiles Indian more the American Javelin. Delhi has opted for Israeli weapons to protect its warships too. A deal for the purchase of Barak-I missile was concluded a month ago. Also, there is a renewal of cooperation in the joint production of long range surface to air missiles. On the 10th of November, Israel concluded its first successful trials of the new Indo-Israeli anti-aircraft missiles.

The delegation of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, presently visiting Delhi, has proposed to modify its mobile air defence system Iron Dome specifically to the requirements of India.

The rapid development of military-technical cooperation between India and Israel can be explained by the similar threats faced by the two countries in the field of defense, fight against terrorism and extremism, believes Jon Grevatt, the Asia-Pacific defense industry analyst for IHS Jane's. "Israeli capabilities fit in with the military requirements of the Indian armed forces," Grevatt said. "The threats they face are similar".

Other analysts attribute the coming together of India and Israel, with the personality of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2006, the United States and European countries declared Narendra Modi persona non grata, accusing him of involvement in the mass loss of life during the riots in Gujarat in 2002. But the leadership of Israel extended a warm welcome to Modi during his visit to their country, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time.

However, personal sympathies of the head of the Indian government with regards to Israel are unlikely to play a decisive role in growth of relations with Tel Aviv, consider Russian experts. India's leadership is practical in its choice of partners and this is based on national interests, says Vladimir Shvaryev, deputy director at the Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade.

"I think one of the reasons for this large-scale cooperation and development is a desire of India to diversify its sources of military supplies. And Israel is regarded as one of the major supplier of arms to India, after Russia
. In relation to other major suppliers - France and the United States, there are some concerns in New Delhi pertaining to the reliability of long-term contracts. France is now losing its image because of the scandal, delayed for political reasons, for the supply helicopter-carrier "Mistral" to Russia. Doubts exist in relation to the United States too. In addition, the US-made weapons - the above-mentioned Javelin anti-tank missiles were found to be inferior to the Israeli Spike".

Israel readily shares its military technology with India. Similar to the joint Russian-Indian missile project "BrahMos", Israel, together with India, is developing an anti-aircraft naval missile (naval SAM) – the Barak-NG.

Recently, it was reported that India has removed the company Israeli Military Industries (IMI) from the "black list" of foreign companies, suspected of bribing Indian officials. According to the Indian press, the Ministry of Defence of India intends to engage specialists from the IMI to develop their own homemade future main battle tank. And also to create together with the Israeli Military Concern – a factory for producing artillery ammunition, including the much sought-after by the Indian Army – the bi-modular charge system for 155mm guns.

========

It says a few things about India

1)India is mature in its approach

2)Russia knows that India is very practical in its defence procurements and any deal India strikes with other nations are assessed by Russia for its practicality on Indian requirement. It understands that its strategic association with India on larger scale is intact and its foundation is strong.

3)India does not blindly takes things cuz USA said so. A few media reports said that India is orienting towards USA. This is :bs: , India scrubbed the Javeline deal from USA and chose Isreali stuffs, cuz it suits us more. Meaning India knows what she is doing. All those talks about India USA - Pak Russia is hyped from its larger context of things.

4)INdia is read to deal categorically (IMI Deal) if defence companies put things in favor of India with capable products.

@sorcerer, USA has great influence on Israel. A lot of military technology that Israel has is result of US government funding. The world is more complex than it seems.
The relations with Israel can bloom only in a positive environment between India and USA.

India will buy from USA also. This will definitely put pressure on Russia. Russia need to focus on general civilian items also and not just military items. Russia has made a mistake of making trade very narrow. Russia must import more from India and also must have many joint ventures. Russia is losing influence in India.

I think this is what is happening!! But india is categorical. It wont deny Russia for USA. I meant, all regional positionings should be read on larger context than deal to deal.
