I guess the Indian Army/IAF origianlly wanted the Rheinmetall Oerlikon 35mm Skyshield system. But Rheinmetall was blacklisted for bribery and the plan never went ahead. So desi systems being propped up.

This purchase of Nasams 2 is a quid pro quo deal to sooth Uncle Trump's frayed nerves.

It's sort of a payment for the Rs 5.43 billion S-400 deal.

As a product, it will add zero value to our inventory since we already have systems better suited to meet our requirements.

And the deal is just around a billion US dollars. We Indians can afford this. Or else, Uncle will send its CAATSA goons after us.
Bdw...akash can handle cruise missile s....mrsam can (production from next year)
And akash mk2 too

Then why nasam....not iron dome(battle tested)
NASAMSis AMRAAM 120 in SAM mode. We can learn how to make QRSAM. But this is subject to USA not barring India from learning it via some inspection schedule

We have tested qrsam multiple times successfully. I don't think USA has anything to do with it that program is on the verge of induction.

For longer range Sam we are going for Barak and XRSAM in future.

India to counter US protectionism with e-commerce, data security bills

“In the digital world, data is wealth. There are, however, two crucial issues – who owns the data and how MNCs share revenues earned by using the data. The revenue generated online often goes directly overseas, which is nothing but flight of wealth from India,” said a second official, who also didn’t want to be named.

While referring to differences caused by Washington’s threats of action under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) in response to India’s deal to acquire the S-400 missile defence system from Russia and US efforts to wean India away from Russian military hardware, the people cited above said New Delhi will not scuttle the S-400 deal.

#US weapon system that India is set to buy tests new missile

.

US aerospace company Raytheon announced on Wednesday that it had tested the AIM-9X Sidewinder, a short-range air-to-air missile, from the NASAMS air defence system for the first time.

NASAMS is the acronym for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, a mobile air defence system manufactured by Raytheon and Kongsberg, a Norwegian company. Media reports earlier this month claimed that India had begun the process to acquire an upgraded version of the NASAMS called the NASAMS-II from the US, in a deal worth approximately Rs 6,000 crore. NASAMS is meant to shoot down aircraft, drones and cruise missiles.

The NASAMS test of the Sidewinder missile was conducted by the Royal Norwegian Air Force in May. From the start, NASAMS has used the ground-launched version of the AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (AMRAAM). Incidentally, the AMRAAM was fired by Pakistani F-16 jets against Indian fighters during the aerial skirmish over Kashmir in February. The AMRAAM is a radar-guided missile, while the Sidewinder uses an imaging infra-red seeker, which homes in on the heat signature of a target.

The addition of a heat-seeking missile would allow the NASAMS to better engage stealthy targets that are able to evade radar detection as well as destroy targets when adversaries are able to jam radar systems electronically.

“This flight test opened the door for NASAMS customers to add a vital, short-range layer to their ground-based air defence,” said Kim Ernzen, vice president of Raytheon Air Warfare Systems. “Pairing Sidewinder with AMRAAM means forces can have complementary interceptors with a mix of sensors to better engage and destroy threats that may attempt to overwhelm a defence system,” Ernzen added.

The AMRAAM missiles fired from the NASAMS are estimated to have a range of around 40km. The Sidewinder’s range is expected to be less than that. At least seven countries have purchased the NASAMS system. The NASAMS has been providing air defence to the Washington DC area since 2005.

The Times of India reported earlier this month the US could send a letter of acceptance for the sale of NASAMS to India by July-August. Once a contract is signed, deliveries are expected in two to four years. In 2018, then defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman cleared the start of the procurement process for NASAMS. NASAMS is being procured for providing air defence to Delhi and is slated to operate alongside the indigenous ballistic missile defence system and the Russian S-400.

The US is also offering India its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and Patriot missiles in a bid to get New Delhi to cancel its purchase of the S-400 missile system from Russia.

India Strategic.

AD Weapons: The indigenous Akash SAM System reportedly worked well during the Gagan Shakti Exercise and is shaping up well. Will the IAF be inducting more of these systems? In this context, what is the latest on the Israeli Spyder systems which were expected to join operational service in the IAF and the Indo-Israeli joint venture of MR-SAM? Also, what is the latest on acquisition of S-400 Triumf systems from Russia?

Air Chief.

Akash Missile System performed well during exercise Gagan Shakti. A case has been initiated to procure seven more squadrons of Akash Missile Systems (AMS) from BEL. The first Squadron of SPYDER missile was raised on February 16, 2018. Delivery of equipment for the other three squadrons is under way.[So total 4 squadrons. Post Balakot news reports of Spyder SAM being used in Srinagar and Gujarat]

The system was also successfully utilised during Exercise Gagan Shakti. The MRSAM programme involves joint development and delivery of Firing Units (FUs) by DRDO in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industry (IAI), Israel.

The contract for joint development and supply of MRSAM was signed between DRDO and IAI, Israel on February 16, 2009. There has been delay in inducting the system, while the first MRSAM Squadron has already been resurrected in 2015, the equipment should be delivered in 2019. [So no functional MRSAM unit as of now.]

The S-400 is in use by the Russian Armed Forces since the year 2007. It is a long range anti aircraft missile system capable of intercepting Ballistic missile and low RCS targets like UAVs and cruise missiles. This system would be a game changer in our context and would provide us the much needed layered Air Defence at long ranges. The acquisition process for the system is under way.

India Strategic.

IAF is reportedly in the process of revamping its AD surveillance systems with DAC having cleared acquisition of High Powered Radars. How is IAF moving forward in terms of modernising its entire inventory of high, medium and LL Radars? Your comments please.

Air Chief.

The AD framework of the IAF is indeed being revamped. This is on two counts namely, induction of new state-of-the-art systems, and their integration into a completely networked AD system. As far as the induction of new systems is concerned, the process is proceeding smoothly.

There has been a concerted effort to induct cutting edge technology & follow up with indigenous manufacture. The Medium Powered Radar (MPR), Low Level Transportable Radar (LLTR), Low Level Lightweight Radar (LLLWR) categories have all seen infusion of large numbers of indigenously developed and produced radars.[Still no photo of Thales GS 100 LLTR radar]

This has increased the sensor density manifold in all sectors, including the mountainous regions in the North and East. Acquisition of HPRs, Aerostats and mountain radars will further reinforce this.

The integration of these increased numbers of systems into a highly automated system was undertaken indigenously with BEL being the lead agency. I am happy to state that the system was tested extensively in the exercise and proved itself as a robust force multiplier. IAF has graduated from a point defence, to area defence and is now moving towards layered defence. [How? MRSAM was meant for Area Defence. Its not even inducted leave alone large scale deployment. Spyder and Akash are point defence]

India Strategic.

Did the IAF feel the inadequacy in terms of sheer numbers where its vital force multipliers such as AWACS and Mid-air refuellers are concerned during the recent Pan-India Exercise? If, so what actions are being initiated by the IAF to augment their numbers?

Air Chief.

The deployment of AWACS during the exercise was as per the exercise setting. To overcome the inadequacy, one DRDO developed AEW&C aircraft on Embraer platform has been inducted and the second aircraft is likely to be developed in FoC configuration by the end of 2018.

The procurement case for two additional IL-76 based AWACS is presently with MoD and is at CFA approval stage. Indigenous AWACS (I) programme for up to six aircraft is being progressed by DRDO. As an immediate measure, to meet the urgent operational requirements, IAF is also exploring latest technology aircraft available globally which are operational and in use.

For reference: 1 Spyder Squadron has 6 Mobile Firing Units (MFUs). 1 Squadron will usually protect 1 air base. So total 4 air bases to be protected. Perhaps Spyder is only a gapfiller till our own QRSAM built.

can you stop over thinking

If security to Delhi or Mumbai comes , they need the top notch US or Russian missile defense system, cuz they know desi shit works only when DRDO officials present

While Army or IAF , let them bite their own finger, will it works or not

Actually 18 squadrons of Spyder were ordered, so at least 18 major bases are protected with it. The order meant 750 Python & 750 Derby Missiles.

So far Syrians have been using S200 for AD, and none of their adversaries have ventured into areas where S400 has been deployed I.e north east Syria.

Needs confirmation though...
