You want at least one guy with some more range on his main gun.
MP5s are great till 100 metres but if, for any reason, they get caught in a firefight at more than a 100 metres (on approach to the plane, jihadis taking positions in the far opposite side of the plane during the intervention etc etc), you don't want to be running and trying to close in because your bullets are having an atrocious drop and are not able to hit the target. The commando with the AK will probably be pushed to the rear during the cool-guy entry and clearing unless he's needed.

The same reason for which other operators have their helmet mounted NVGs Stowed, the deck of the ship can be dark and unpredictable

Someone has to provide cover and overwatch for the boarding party either from a helo or another vessel.

They'd use sniper overwatch then, and this seems like an airplane hijack drill why would you use AKs?
It was joint op with NSG and Navy's own QRT teams were also their.

Though to be the devil's advocate, depends on the anti hijack scenario they are prepping for. 103 not for entry team for sure but there are a number of senarios where you would need additional longer ranged Firepower (than just a long gun)

Or better to have one and not need it or need it and not have one ?
