I remember when I joined this forum, seeing this level of combat gears on Indian soldiers was a rare sight. :hail:
It’s nothing special! Some kneepads and Tavors, nothing has really changed for 10+ years now.

No modern plate carriers, no modern helmets, no modern communications equipment etc etc.

Forget about multi tube NODs

The Ghatak troops look like proper SOF now. That's a massive change from when they look like regulars with Sterling Carbines.

To be fair modernised gear is seen with NSG, MARCOS, PARA SF especially with the new Viper HelmwtsHby MKU and atleast three types of plate carriers (1 MOLE Pattern IIRC).

Ghataks have seen a decent improvement and that’s encouraging.

But that they are almost on par with the full blown SF units (in many cases I think you could struggle to differentiate PARA SF and Ghatak) is appalling.

Since 2009/10 it’s hard to see much improvement in their gear and this stagnation is unfathomable, if they had continued with their upgrades in the last decade they could be on par with most Western SF units today instead, and this isn’t exaggeration, Indian SF units are amongst the WORST equipped special forces units on the PLANET. Forget US/UK/France/Australia, Indian SF isn’t even better equipped than the SF units of the Philippines or Columbia.

NSG is a success story (although they still have to keep pushing to get on par with the very very top units in their field) but they come under MHA so aren’t relevant to this discussion. Although I would say that the MOD should look at NSG’s 2010 modernisation plan, it involved a top
To bottom overhaul of NSG’s equipment and a roadmap of 5 years to implement it and it has to be said the effort was impressively effective. I have seen zero indication that there is any such fundamental analysis and plan for any SF unit. It seems procurements are piecemeal and sporadic with no vision at all.

There is a deep sickness within the MOD that’s all I can think, too much babudom, too much inefficiency, too little leadership and huge vested and competing interests. End result is some infantry to this day looks like they is from the early 1900s and so much legacy crap remains.

I dont know if this was posted on the forum

But during the recent Rescue Attempt on Commander Tomy - (before helped arived) IN Ships were 74hrs away the Navy's Plan B was to HALO drop 4 Marcos into the ocean to keep the commander Company (the Commander btw is also MARCOS)

Apparently the 4 volunteered Operators were about to board a C-17 before news of the French ship reached them and they RTB.

This is IMO a baddassery on a whole different level. Jumping into a Storm in open ocean hoping to land next to the boat - Its a needle in multiple haystack senario. That is if the 4 operators survived the jump to begin with

I asked the same question long ago, no one answered.
I think this post might help you a bit......................... :-
This video clip showing Arun Shourie revealing a trans-LC op by Indian Army 14 Kms during ABV's time. They went in 14 Kms deep, killed off many and brought back 7 bodies as proof. They also brought back the visitor diary from the Pak post which was recently signed by Musharraf himself.

I am guessing this was in response to Kaluchak massacre.

MARCOS at Wular Lake ........................................................................................
Again very very mediocre.

Have seen marine infantry from Brazil and Mexico far better equipped than this and this is the navy’s most elite unit? What a joke!

Better than 20 years ago? Sure. Better than 10 years ago? Not really.

That’s my point. For whatever reason all 3 SF units seem to have stagnated for the last decade with very very very mediocre updates since then. Modernisation should be a continuous processes but for some reason all 3 seem to have given up.

This is further compounded by the general improvement in equipment (and training) for regular units such as RR and those deployed on the LOC (helmets, plate carriers, optics, accessories for weapons, ballistic shields etc etc)

I mean there’s not much difference now between a SF from Army/Navy/AF and a Ghatak or even just a regular RR soldier. In most militaries the SF guys are 5-10 years ahead of the regulars in terms of gear. Here they are about on the same level. It’s unfathomable. Take away the Tavor and I guarantee you 99% of Defence enthusiasts even here couldn’t tell the difference between a SF soldier and RR soldier.

The MARCOs in those videos are worse equipped than special police units in most nations. They are equipped poorer than the VBSS units of many navies.

They are just patrolling in Indian Territory. We would not expect them to carry heavy gears and all the logistics support kit along with them.

It’s not about support kit.

Just their basic gear isn’t up to scratch. Outdated helmets, uniforms, plate carriers, communications equipment etc etc. Whether deployed abroad or domestically none of this would change.

Seems that since 2010 all 3 SFs have said, we’ve got ACHs, we’ve got Tavors, job done.

2 injured in mistaken encounter in Manipur

Two soldiers were reportedly wounded after a mistaken encounter between Para Commandos of Indian Army and troops of Assam Rifles in interior Manipur village bordering Myanmar on Monday evening. Reports said that the mistaken encounter took place at the forest area near Nambisha village in Kamjong district Monday evening, around 5.30 pm.

Troops of 11 Assam Rifles guarding the international borderline, who entered the forest area after receiving information of presence of rebels, were fired upon by the Para Commandos of Indian Army who were also waiting to ambush the rebels.

Two personnel of the Para Commando sustained injuries in the mistaken encounter which lasted for some minutes, reports said.
