Nelam, C sector, Thangla - 17 SFF personnel of 16 coy secretly crossed the LaC (line of actual control) and raided a Chinese post. The surprise raid resulted in the death of 2 Chinese troops including an officer according to SFF veteran who was part of that raid.

One of few instances of local tactical level raids by SFF (Special Frontier Force) without formal orders of Indian govt in the 1960s

The most interesting thing about such raids are that they also have some QBZ-95 in reserve which are used by Chinese soldiers so that they can perform behind the line operations more effectively in disguise

9 Para Special Forces (SF) "Bravest of the Brave" . Y'all know why !

=========

Four Ashok Chakras of the Unit :-

1. Paratrooper Sanjog Chettri (1982 - 2003 ) - martyred during operation Operation Sarp Vinash in Hill Kaka (near Surankote) Kashmir. Paratrooper Sanjog Chettri of 9 PARA (SF) was part of a Team tasked for neutralising terrorist locations. The commandos, while approaching a terrorists' hideout, drew heavy automatic fire. Sensing grave danger to his comrades, Paratrooper Sanjog Chettri assaulted the cave, lobbing grenades and firing from the hip and killed one terrorist. In the intense exchange of fire, he suffered gunshot wounds to the right shoulder, but unmindful of his physical condition he pressed on with the assault and killed a second terrorist. He, however, fell at the entrance of the cave. But that was not the end. Paratrooper Sanjog Chettri, in one last act of supreme valour, drew his commando knife and charged into the hideout, killing one more terrorist in hand to hand combat before finally succumbing to his wounds. Inspired by his supreme sacrifice, his comrades killed 13 terrorists that night and apprehended a Pakistan trained terrorist.

The government conferred the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, on this 21-year-old Army Paratrooper who laid down his life in Operation Sarp Vinash.

2. Major Sudhir walia - As a child he walked to school which did not have a uniform because its pupils often could not afford one. He sat on the floor on a coarse mat and first told his mother he wanted to join the army in class 2, joined the army and 9 Para SF

August 29, 1999, a month after the Kargil war ended, his team was ordered to demolish a terrorist hideout in the thick Haphruda jungle in Kupwara district. Major Walia had searched the forest the whole night, but the enemy remained elusive.

In the morning as he went past a stream, he spotted toothpaste foam by the edge of the water. He knew the terrorists were within striking distance and stealthily caught up with them.

3. Capt Arun Singh Jasrotia - On 15th September 1995 Captainj Jasrotia, SM of 9 PARA (SF) while leading his team in Lolab Valley, J&K came under heavy rocket and small arm fire. In order to extricate his men, this brave officer crawled forward and inspite of being injured gravely killed one terroist with his commando knife and neutralized the other terrorist by lobbing grenades. His brave and gallant action gave oppurtunity for his comrades to take cover and engage the remaining terrorists effectively. In the ensuing firefight the brave officer succumbed to his injuries. However in retaliation the commandos eliminated all remaining terrorists. For his gallant action Captain Arun Jasrotia was awarded with the highest peace time gallantry award of ASHOK CHAKRA posthumously.

4. Lance Naik Mohan Goswami - On the intervening night of 02/03 September 2015 Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami was part of an ambush in Haphruda forest at Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir. At about 2015hrs, there was a fierce encounter with four terrorists wherein two of his comrades were injured and pinned down. Lance Naik Mohan along with his buddy dashed forward to rescue their injured colleagues, knowing well the risks to their own lives. He first assisted in eliminating one terrorist. Sensing grave danger to three of his wounded colleagues, Lance Naik Mohan with utter disregard to his own personal safety, charged at the remaining terrorists drawing intense fire from them. He was hit in the thigh. Unmindful, he closed in and eliminated one terrorist, injured another and was again shot in the abdomen. Undeterred by his injuries, he hurled himself on the last terrorist and killed him at point blank range before succumbing to his wounds. Lance Naik Mohan not only killed two terrorists, but also assisted in neutralizing the other two and save the lives of three of his wounded colleagues.

All of a sudden we see a lot more use of tactical shields ... seems like Army has made basic doctrinal changes emphasizing protection over mobility.
These were some of the changes made to SOPs after losses at Para SF last year and this year especially during room clearing and CQB. Also from now on you won't see many SF guys or others for that matter walking around without helmets or Patkas. Ground commanders will rip you a new one for such violations of SOPs.

Sad reality of COIN/ Anti Terror ops is that regardless of high level of training, skills etc. SF operatives are more vulnerable to loss of life during encounters because ROE are quite strict due to Pigs using human shields, civilians in the area, as well as Stone pelting scum etc. etc.

Give the same guys be it SF, Ghataks, Garuds etc. a conventional raid or Ops like the surgical strikes, they pull it off 100/100 because of the element of planning, good recce, surprise and lax ROEs etc. The surgical strikes proves that teams of SF, Ghataks could easily kill over 70 pigs, a dozen Paki uniformed abduls, destroy several bunkers, face heavy Paki fire on the way back and get home safe without any casualities. Life is much easier for a soldier when you ask him to kill everything that moves in a mission area.

Good to see MARCOS using holographic sights and p-rails on the MP5s. Really helpful in CQB where you can engage targets quickly.

I recently came to meet a operator who has spent considerable time on the LOC and among the things we talked about i brought out the topic of Sniper use on the LOC to target soldiers by Pak.

I was shocked to know that how we think of the situation is not exactly how it is.Many including myself though that Pakis are dominating us when it comes to Sniping.

But thats not the truth at all.

According to him,

Not too long ago there was a time we killed a lot of their officers in a short period of time(sniping) and they were really scared of our snipers so much so that officers rarely came on the front line and if so used to hide their ranks.
