Yeah, but India could afford to sleep over a Pakistani threat.

The current Congress government is clearly sleeping over an obvious Chinese threat, and we can't afford to do so.

During Vajpayee tenure, Our defence was not strong enough. Also, our economy was just started improving not to forget various sanctions. Still, Vajpayee government created a good platform for futuristic improvement in diplomacy, International influence, defence modernization. What was done by BJP government at that time is paying right now. May be some negligence possible but that was more due to capability rather than intention. What we neglected was affordable and we still won Kargil war.

What Congress is doing for last 7 years ?? China is encroaching in Leh/Northern areas and we are sitting like nothing happening. Pakistan did Mumbai blast and we treating Kasab like special guest.

What Congress is doing is very serious threat to our sovereignty and security and it's worst government since 1947. This congress government is biggest threat for our country than any other external threat.

Southern Naval Command demonstrates operational capabilities at Kochi

Southern Naval Command demonstrates operational capabilities at Kochi

November 27th, 2011

Southern Naval Command conducted an awe inspiring demonstration of its operational capabilities for the city of Kochi today at the waterfront facing Rajendra Maidan and Netaji Subhash Park. The entire spectrum of naval operations was included in the display; within the limitations imposed by depth restrictions of the channel and other technical limitations. Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala was the Chief Guest at the event where the residents of Kochi turned out in huge numbers. The Chief Guest was received at the venue by Vice Admiral KN Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command.

The function organized as part of the impending Navy day celebrations, started with a fly past by various Navy aircraft including the giant TU- 142 aircraft from Chennai and the IL-38 from Goa. Thereafter the marine Commandos carried out a simulated beach reconnaissance and assault with the leader of the team coming ashore in his menacing combat rig to deliver the programme brochure to the Chief Guest. This was followed by a demonstration of water sports including waterskiing and jet skiing. Next, the Indian Navy Sky

Diving team swooped down from a Seaking helicopter. The next item was the demonstration of a VBSS (Visit, Board, Search and Seize) operation where the Commandos in fast rigid inflatable boats surrounded a simulated hostile vessel and overpowered it. The helicopter demonstrations included the Seaking helicopter flying past the crowd with an Ambassador car under slung, STIE( small team insertion and extraction) operation where commandos were dropped and withdrawn from a hostile area and helobatics by two Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. A Chetak helicopter of the Indian Coast Guard demonstrated landing on the helicopter deck of the missile corvette – INS Karmuk- which was underway. The work horse of the Indian Navy- the chetak helicopter, also demonstrated their versatile search and rescue capabilities. The Marine Commandos demonstration of a bayonet charge brought to focus their raw energy and menacing, destructive power. The commandos' simulated clandestine attack on an enemy offshore installation and its destruction provided the viewers an awe inspiring and explosive spectacle.

INS Kabra, INS Kalpeni and two Indian Coast Guard Interceptor boats demonstrated their maneuvering skills by turning on the spot several times in the restricted waters of Kochi channel. The fly past of all participating aircraft of the Navy and Coast Guard in THANKYOU formation was heartwarming. After the solemn sun set ceremony, which brought to an end the demonstration, Navy and Coastguard ships steamed past with their illumination lights switched on.

NDA government ignored intelligence on Kargil attack: Study

The ghost of the Kargil War has returned to haunt the National Democratic Alliance yet again, this time for sleeping over an intelligence alert that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government received, even a year before the Pakistan Army's intrusions began in 1999.

The authoritative revelation comes from the Indian Army's think-tank Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) in a study it undertook on the Indian intelligence and the Kargil crisis. The report damns the charge on the Indian security establishment of the major failure in detecting and predicting the Pakistani invasion because of lack of proper intelligence and a turf war between the security agencies. "What went wrong, was not lack of intelligence, but the lack of coordination, assessment and predicting in specific terms in which way the attack will be enacted," says the study.

It shows that the Indian intelligence agency had accurately assessed Pakistani intentions prior to the Kargil crisis and as early as in 1998, a year prior to detection of the intrusions, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had rushed a secret note to the then Prime Minister Vajpayee on the Pakistani logistics building across the Kargil.

As many as 43 reports were produced together between June 1998 and May 1999 by the three intelligence agencies—the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), IB and Military Intelligence (MI). Two other reports were generated by the Indian Border Guards stationed in Kargil.

Out of these 45 reports, 11 had landed at the Joint Intelligence Coordination (JIC), directly working under the Cabinet Secretariat. The most crucial two reports, one each from IB and RAW were copied to the then Prime Minister.

The study says the analysis, origins and destinations of these reports are quite revealing: Army intelligence produced 22 reports, none of which were shared with any civilian agencies including the JIC. RAW generated 11 reports, of which seven were widely disseminated and four were shared only with the Army. IB produced 10 reports, of which three were distributed widely, five went exclusively to the Army, and two were sent to the Ministry of Defence.

On 2 June, 1998, the IB had dispatched a note to the Prime Minister, containing details about Pakistani logistics building efforts along the LoC in areas opposite to Kargil. The note was personally signed by then IB chief, meaning the contents were extra-sensitive that required attention from the highest political level.

Again in the winter of 1998-99, both RAW and IB had predicted an escalation of the mercenary infiltration, with the thrust in the direction of Kargil. In its October 1998 threat assessment, RAW had even warned that Pakistan Army might launch "a limited swift offensive with possible support of alliance partners—a reference to mercenaries."

"But credible reports suggest that RAW was informally pressured to retreat from the alarming projections it had made in October 1998, as Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was preparing to undertake a peace journey to Lahore," says the report.

It says it was after the nuclearisation of South Asia that four Pakistani generals, including then Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf, had drawn up plans for incursions into the Indian Kashmir, code named Operation Badr. Exuding confidence with the nuclearisation, they had expected intervention of foreign governments in the wake of any Indian retaliation.

"The guiding belief was that India would either overreact by invading Pakistan, thus prompting international intervention or they would mount a desultory counter-attack, which would be easily thwarted," the report says. They had not envisaged that India would launch a local counter-attack backed by aircraft and heavy artillery, while retaining the option of escalating hostilities.

The study also points out that reconnaissance for Operation Badr had begun in November 1998, when Pakistan troops had probed Indian defence lines in Kargil. "Unmanned aerial vehicles were used to verify the laxity of Indian border security. Actual movement of troops into Indian territory began late February 1999," says the paper.

After the May 1998 nuclear tests, RAW estimated that then Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in order to escape pressure from hawks within his government, would escalate support for cross-border infiltration by mercenaries (Afghan war veterans).

The Indian agencies were also convinced that Pakistan would not like to widen the sphere of attack due to economic vulnerability. This was vindicated, during the Kargil crisis, when Pakistan Air Force refused to provide close air support to Pakistani troops fighting on the Indian side of the LoC.

The paper concludes that more than lack of intelligence, it was lack of coordination, assessment and turf-war between various security agencies that took a toll on the Indian security system. More Kargils and Mumbais can be avoided by setting up formal coordination bodies to assess and coordinate and provide insights into how the enemy thinks.

The intelligence reports, which the study also cites, assessed the possibility of intrusion by armed 'mercenaries' and its not clear if it thought he mercenaries would Pak army regulars with full logistical support. cross border infiltration by mercenaries was the fact of life in Kashmir and even the study concludes correctly that India did not believe that it was likely that infiltration would happen in the desolate rugged terrain of Kargil, so far removed from the the valley.

Heavy casualties suffered by Indian army during the early days of the crisis illustrates the fact that even the army was not fully aware of the nature of the 'mercenary strength' occupying the Kargil heights, which forced them to change their assessment the situation and the subsequent military response. It is not surprising then that the Indian govt too shared the Army's assessment of the threat of possible intrusion of mercenaries in kargil as not 'realistic'.

Where the Indian armed forces, the intelligence agencies and the govt erred was their miscalculation in assessing Pakistan army's propensity to miscalculate.

P.S: Typical Tehelka journalism, inventing a ghost where there is no haunting.

The ghost of the Kargil War has returned to haunt the National Democratic Alliance yet again, this time for sleeping over an intelligence alert that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government received, even a year before the Pakistan Army's intrusions began in 1999.

I am not a BJP supporter or INC supporter.

I think you meant Masood Azhar. If India had not did what it did in 2000, nearly 200 Passengers of IC 814 would have died. The Govt did the right thing by saving their lives.

Why let the plane leave the airport in the first place ? what did bjp do after that to paksitan ?

I only get annoyed when group of people bash congress endlessly and then ignore or justify same ineptness from bjp. even during kargil bjp didn't give authorization to army to cross loc! im talking about loc and not international border because beyong loc is our own territory but that decision not to cross loc implied that bjp govt didn't think of it as our own land.

Im not fanboy of either also.....call a spade a spade.

I agree, No matter who comes to power we will continue to be ruled by morons.
And that will remain to be true till people blindly support either camp.

Whole thing is a farce...opposition party opposes just for the sake of opposing. I mean according to bjp's ideology they shouldn't have opposed nuclear deal or current fdi reforms. Same problem is with congress also.

@ Galaxy......I feel you care less about our security; more interested in bashing political parties you dont like.

Fact is both the parties fail when it come to ensure national security. We did not have economic prosperity etc can not be any excuse. Till Mumbai attack nobody thought it is necessary to have quick transportation of NSGs. It's true Masood Azhar and co were freed for safety of Indian passengers; but GOI didn't take any action when whole world knew they went to Pakistan after release. There were allegation of corruption in defence purchase; then the infamous Coffin scam. What action was taken? Rather it was made sure to suffocate Tahelca.com (today we cry about whistle-blowers)

What our experience says...our babus will keep on maintaining their slow movement; our Netas will keep throwing muds; our army-navy-airforce will keep crying for their needs; terrorists will keep us attacking and we will keep on thinking a government change will change everything.
