No one will announce when it will go into service or start sea trials.
When they are announcing ever little detail like reactor crticallity, just wait and see how they annonce it with a big bang when it enters service...probably late 2016. I hope im wrong though.

I doubt the Submarine will ever enter service. It got critical last August and 7 months are up and it hasnt even started Sea trials. and no one complains or takes up the issue. Same regarding ever military project.
In the light of many naval accidents, do u still want our navy to rush with the commissioning of a NUCLEAR submarine without proper inspections and precautions ?? Let them take their time buddy.. The project started in 70s. We are not even born then.now can't we wait for few more months for the fruit to ripen ???

Im not blaming the Navy. Im blaming the whole corrupt system from the Top level. Poor management, wrong funding priorities , poor infrastructure,etc....and in some cases...corrupt Naval officers.

And its not only about Arihant, lets review the other Naval projects

Kolkata Class Destroyers. - First deadline : All 3 ships ready by 2012 , Second deadline : All 3 ships ready by 2014. Its 2014 now, even the first ships is not commissioned.

Kamorta Class Corvettes - All 4 ships by 2012. Its 2014 and not even the first ship is commissioned.

Arihant class - First ship by 2012/13. Not even started Sea trials yet.

Vikrant Class - INS Vikrant by 2014, Vishal by 2017. Currently, they are not even sure about Vishal's design and propulsion, let alone plannin to start construction anytime soon.

Scorepene Class submarine - Was planned to be inducted from 2012.

Project 17A Frigates - First ship was to be Launched by 2015. Its 2014 and even the official order hasnt been placed.

Who is taking the responsibility of all this? Is there no accountibility? Whats the Govt. doin? Whats Dhoti doing?

The INS Arihant
incidentally has revealed a bit more of
itself recently as the pictureThis ship is headed
out for sea trials and will soon test-fire
the 750 km plus range K-15 SLBM
while submerged. The Arihant can
carry up to 12 K-15s. Its sister ship, the
INS Aridaman is getting ready for
launch this year.

Arihant N-sub gets ready to fire ballistic missiles | idrw.org

Moving closer towards completing the nuclear triad, the indigenously developed nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arihant, will soon be testing its capability to launch long range ballistic missiles from within the depths of the ocean.
"We will be conducting a test launch of the K-4 missile from the Arihant submarine, which is already undergoing sea trials, within the next few months," Scientific Adviser to the Raksha Mantri and DRDO Director General, Dr Avinash Chander told The Tribune during his visit to Chandigarh.
The 3,000-km range K-4 Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) was successfully test launched by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from an underwater pontoon, simulating a submerged submarine, on March 24.
The development of the K-4 comes in the wake of the K-15 a submarine launched ballistic missile that has a range of 750 kms and is already in production. Aland-based version of the K-15 is also on the anvil.
INS Arihant, which will have at least three more sister submarines which are already under construction, will carry four K-4 missiles or 12 K-15 missiles along with six torpedoes. Four submarines with unlimited range, each carrying four 3000-kms range missiles gives an enormous degree of flexibility, reliability, survivability and stand-off attack capability to the nuclear triad.
Also coming up shortly is the test launch of the containerised version of the Agni-4 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile. The 4000-kms range missile would be road-mobile and launched from a contained, from which it would be shot in the air and its engines would ignite in mid air. The conventional version of the missile was test fired by the Strategic Forces Command in its road-mobile configuration in January this year, paving its way for serial production and service induction.
Dr Chander said that following the successful launch of the Astra beyond visual range air to air missile from a Su-30 fighter earlier this month, a launch to test its performance against a live aerial target will be conducted next month.A test of Hellina, the helicopter launched version of the Nag anti-tank missile, is also scheduled shortly.
Lethal fire power
INS Arihant, which will carry four K-4 missiles or 12 K-15 missiles along with six torpedoes K-4 missiles with a range of 3,000 km, was successfully test launched by the Defence Research and Development Organisation from an underwater pontoon on March 24.

4 arihant class subs? I thought there were to be more. Or is production going to shift to arihant-II after these 4?
Perhaps the original arihant class can be fine tuned and armed and classified as an SSN.

Perhaps the original arihant class can be fine tuned and armed and classified as an SSN.
The GOI/CCS has as of now, committed to 3+1 Arihant class SSBNs, with INS Arihant being designated S-2 (S-1 is reportedly the test bed). Also, over and above these, the GOI has in principle approved the construction of a larger, more capable, follow up SSBNs to the initial batches.

(There are also plans for SSNs based on the Arihant design, but that's another topic)

As such, the S-4 will be the end of the current Arihant design. The S-5 and succeeding subs will be the next gen avatar of the Arihant.

is this a bit like the artillery where India did not purchase bofors replacement and suddenly out came the news that we had transfer of technology and also are able to make our own. the same with respect to submarines where we are shown to be in the ditch and suddenly out came the news that we are able to make our own.
