Hey guys what's the status of INS arihant ??
The Navy chief during his recent visit to Eastern naval command said that "The Arihant is currently going through last phase of harbour trials, after which the submarine would be ready for sea trials."

Possibly they extended the harbour trials. Also during sea trials the Arihant will test fire The K-15 and possibly even some torpedos

4 arihant class subs? I thought there were to be more. Or is production going to shift to arihant-II after these 4?
Perhaps the original arihant class can be fine tuned and armed and classified as an SSN.
Indian navy has a request for 3 SSBNs and 6 SSNs
So after the Arihants are delivered we might see some home made SSNs :)

Who are these sources and why are they scared to come out and tell honest truth about such an important issue? Somehow I don't trust these un named sources. Maybe the arindham is stil in harbor trials

INS Arihant to testfire BO-5 missiles in sea trials: DRDO:thumb:

NEW DELHI: The indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant is set to be launched for sea trials in a "month or two" and it will testfire the submarine-launched nuclear capable ballistic missile BO-5, DRDO said today.

The nuclear reactor on board the INS Arihant was activated last year in August taking it closer towards sea trials after which the vessel would be inducted into operational service in the Navy.

"Arihant is going through the power-up cycle (in its nuclear reactor). ..

INS Arihant to test fire "BO-5" submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) | idrw.org

"Arihant is going through the power-
up cycle (in its nuclear reactor). It is
the first time that we are doing the
power-up cycle on a nuclear
submarine. So, we are very cautious
and going step by step. It will take a
month or two more before it goes to
the sea (for trials)," DRDO chief
Avinash Chander told news agencies,
on Thursday adding, "During the trial
phase, the Arihant will test-fire the
fully-developed BO-5 missile as part of
the sea trial

INS Arihant may or may not be undergoing sea trials.

DRDO Chief Avinash Chander told The Tribune on May 15, 2014 that sea trials of INS Arihant are already underway. :)

He told PTI yesterday that Sea Trials would start in a month or two! :-(

INS Arihant may or may not be facing serious technical issues with its nuclear reactor.

DRDO Chief Avinash Chander told India Today during DefExpo, "What is going on right now is the power up phase, where the boat is building up her power, a progressive exercise which is being monitored." He added, "It is for the first time that we are going through a nuclear power up exercise in a submarine. It has to go through various levels of checks for safety and security reasons. But we are confident of completing it and going through, shortly."

Chander recently told PTI, "Arihant is going through the power-up cycle (in its nuclear reactor). It is the first time that we are doing the power-up cycle on a nuclear submarine. So, we are very cautious and going step by step."

The DRDO chief's statements may make you wonder whether time has stopped, or indeed reversed?

Look at it this way. If the DRDO and the Indian Navy announced that Arihant Sea Trials are about to commence, or are underway, there would be a lot of Chinese, Burmese (Chinese again, of course!) , Sri Lnakan (Yes, Chinese again) fishing trawlers off the Vizag coast and they won't be fishing fish! Many Panama registered merchant vessels with snooping equipment and US, British and Australian intelligence agents on board losing their way in the Bay of Bengal and ending up near Vizag! (The Russians would, of course, be sitting inside the sub!)

So what happens if the DRDO Chief inadvertently releases information about the Sea Trials to a Chandigarh based newspaper. And The Hindu does a follow-up and confirms the sea trials? Well...let me think...Yes! the DRDO Chief could make a contradictory statement to a government news agency (like the PTI?) to discredit the earlier reports.

I am not suggesting that is what happened.

It's up to each of us to decide what is happening with INS Arihant, nearly five years after its launch and nearly a year after its reactor went critical.

Mysore site may be covertly used to produce n-material: U.S. think tank

Satellite imagery may have blown the shroud of secrecy surrounding India's efforts to extend a Mysore nuclear centrifuge plant constructed in 1992 for the covert production of uranium hexafluoride, which may in turn be channelled towards the manufacture of hydrogen bombs, a U.S.-based military intelligence think tank has said.

According to the IHS Jane's group the new potential site at Mysore's Indian Rare Metals Plant could help expand India's uranium enrichment "substantially," for its nuclear submarine fleet and it would be "most likely to facilitate the construction of an increased number of naval reactors," towards this end.

The organisation has shared the satellite imagery of the Mysore site with The Hindu.

It could also be used to support the development of thermonuclear weapons, IHS Jane's experts said, noting that the facility was expected to become operational by mid-to late-2015.

"The expansion of India's uranium enrichment facilities allows the country to press ahead with the introduction of its ballistic missile nuclear submarine fleet, part of an effort to enhance its existing nuclear deterrent in the face of perceived threats from both China and Pakistan," said Matthew Clements, Editor, IHS Jane's Intelligence Review.

So "BO-5" is yet another, and at least to me, hitherto unknown missile. How many more such alphabet-soup missiles do we have?
