Maybe they can but they don't want to because if they would they could have done it earlier itself to project second-strike capability. I don't see it happening now as K-15 will be operational soon & all future subs will feature N-tipped missiles soon.

Too bad for other parties that they can not win election otherwise ATV could've been launched under their rule. I feel pity for rest of them. They should do better next time.

true , no doubt ,what the normal average voter does not know that it took 20 years more to build the sub ,during which even BJP was in power . Plus congress has an habit to use whatever it can to win elections .

Not talking about cheap political gain someone missed it or gained. So it is better to keep it away because it is OT.

It was widely reported and assumed that pic of ATV is not allowed and may not be published in future because of sensitive nature of this weapon. ATV or now INS Arihant is supposed to be a SSBN and SSBN in general are kept under wraps as long as possible. On another side, ATV is one very important stand in India's nuclear deterrent and for that its pic to be away from eyes of general public and India's enemies was important and necessary, atleast to the time when a back-up or ATV-2 is operational. First restricting and now showing reflects cheapness and a compromise on nation's security for cheap gains.

Now the ATV-1 (TD) pic allowed & out, I believe ATV-2 has completed major work & we can see launching early next year probably. Follow on ATVs will be the actual full grown attack subs with ready characteristics to test K-X.

look there is international restriction which prohibits Russia or any other country (signatory to that treaty) to sell missile or missile system ,range greater than 700km , we can always carry nuclear weapons on board , no such restrictions from Russia

As far as hunter class is concern yeah we defiantly need those hunter class subs, with their speed and endurance they will hunt down enemy boomers. but country like us cannot have that kind of luxury therefore we have to do away with ATV 1 which is multipurpose sub with small nuclear payload and semi hunter class features (you may say best of both worlds).

Indian depleting Submarine force need Indigenous boost, If India need to be a global power it needs to think beyond South Asia, for that we cant depend on mass imports ( Not suitable for country's economy ) 6 scorpions ( Not induced ) and -10 kilos cant be called as main submarine force, Besides India can operate only three nuclear subs in Indian Ocean by 2011, In this kind of situation India need to develop Indigenous Submarine force of ( 2000-3000tons ) mainly nuclear, Small Nuclear hunter killer class have low maintenance and service costs than their bigger boomer class..
For example i find freanch Barracuda_class as a good Nuclear Hunter killer sub!

Btw, Your Point is perfectly fine too, 47,000hp/70MW reactor and propelling 6000ton at 24 knots (44 km/h) (submerged) is magnificent!

1) Chinese huge armada of Subs are the spearhead of Chinese navy in Indian ocean..
2) Few ASW aircrats can only be use to defend the costal regions of India..
3) Sending bigger destroyer and Frigates in open is a risk..
4) If future India would need more Subs than surfaces combatants..

Btw, Sagarika is still developing and we may see a better one with good range in near future..

Agni -3 Submarine variant is in developing stage +5000km..
We will see it operation in near future..

India is building a second ATV just like arihant. they must start building nuclear attack submarines apart from the ones leasing from russia.

We are still years away from having a formidable submarine force, this wont be possible before 2016-17. till then we must work with anti submarine corvettes and the P8 Poseidon that we are acquiring to counter the PLA-N submarine force.

In case, as Sayareakd explained that Nuclear may prove expensive then, India should work on Diesel Electric subs it will prove helpful for IN..
Besides nuclear Arihant we should work on similar Arihant`s type subs with by Diesel electric power-plant..

All Indian Scorpène boats will be built in India at Mazagon Dock Limited, and the last three will have the AIP module.

TOT involved then we have a good AIP deign..
