Somebody explain to me how this is a good decision, and how it is any different from just throwing a bone at DRDO so that they don't feel bad about developing NCLA ?
1) as noted in the article- currently all navy fighter pilots have to go to the US to become carrier qualified, even 10+ years after they took delivery of the 29K. N-LCA 2-seater would allow fighter pilots to become carrier qualified in-house. Any serious navy would’ve done this by now
2) the % of KUBs to Ks is pretty low and a number have already been lost so having some more 2 seaters would be beneficial for the falling apart 29K fleet
3) the IN desperately needs TEDBF to succeed. Having converted N-LCA to a tech demonstration project years ago, they (and ADA) don’t have the expertise of operationalising a clean sheet design. A trap/take off of a test airframe every few months/years from SBTF/a Carrier is nothing like having the thing with users and shaking down in real time. That kind of thing will help refine designs and identify issues that a test program may take decades to do
it really is a no-brainer hence why it’s unlikely to happen within the next 8 years, if at all.
