Why are three Scorpene so expensive? I think Singapore spent half that per submarine on their more advanced Type 218.
The build time of 6 years after an order is placed isn't that bad and is around the time it would take if we ordered directly from German or South Korean shipyards. If we want to induct a submarine every year then we need a continue stream of orders. To get to 24 SSK they need to place an order for 12+ so that after 6 years we can a sub every year.

some good news
No proposal, only ‘internal discussions’ so 1-2 more years of deliberations, 2-3 years of paper moving between ministries, 3 years for delivery. Aka not this side of 2030 and meaning this development shafting would play little part in the development of TEDBF

typical clownish behaviour. This move should’ve happened 5 years ago but senior leadership couldn’t think beyond paper specs

A day late and a dollar short should be Indian military’s motto

Wouldn’t be so expensive if the order had been placed few years back. Cos the line was running in india and abroad. Now they have to restart from scratch. India should have ordered more scorpenes in batches with improvement in every batch.
Korean subs are German subs I think and now they made it their own and they are selling to others. We should have made scorpenes our own. With each iteration increase indigenous content. At the end of 24, sub should be called 100%

Bulk order. Better scale of economies.

Indian Navy, Airforce and Army does not like the word Bulk order

Singapore only ordered 4 Type 218s. The price for a lower end SSK shouldn't be more than 500 million a boat. Maybe we pay extra to manufacture it here but even then the cost for setting up the production line in India should have already been paid for the last order.

More tenders= more opportunities for ‘sweeteners’

every 15-20 years one last batch

Modi should be taking the commissions of some of these officers

Somebody explain to me how this is a good decision, and how it is any different from just throwing a bone at DRDO so that they don't feel bad about developing NCLA ?
1) as noted in the article- currently all navy fighter pilots have to go to the US to become carrier qualified, even 10+ years after they took delivery of the 29K. N-LCA 2-seater would allow fighter pilots to become carrier qualified in-house. Any serious navy would’ve done this by now
2) the % of KUBs to Ks is pretty low and a number have already been lost so having some more 2 seaters would be beneficial for the falling apart 29K fleet
3) the IN desperately needs TEDBF to succeed. Having converted N-LCA to a tech demonstration project years ago, they (and ADA) don’t have the expertise of operationalising a clean sheet design. A trap/take off of a test airframe every few months/years from SBTF/a Carrier is nothing like having the thing with users and shaking down in real time. That kind of thing will help refine designs and identify issues that a test program may take decades to do

it really is a no-brainer hence why it’s unlikely to happen within the next 8 years, if at all.
