Indian Navy's six new indigenous submarines won't have indigenous AIP for prolonged underwater stay

3-4 minutes

The Indian Navy would soon come out with the tender for over Rs 50,000 crore project to build six indigenous conventional submarines but they would not be fitted with the indigenous Air Independent Propulsion system that is being developed by the DRDO.

As per sources, the Indian Navy has asked the DRDO to prove the AIP on a platform before it is allowed to be put on the Scorpene-class submarines when they start coming for their scheduled refits, they said.

It has veen the part of deal but still not a good news tbh

Whats the point in having DRDO demo the AIP and then not use it.
I guess DRDO has to get its own small forces theatre command prepared that just uses weapons developed by DRDO.

And subsequent indigenous SSK.
It's just that for P75I, Navy wants no surprise and to have AIP from get go. Therefore AIP from OEM is chosen
If DRDO AIP takes time to mature, Scorpene will wait or be fitted with progressive designs from DRDO.
I think indigenous aip for indigenous ask is a long way to go and a different beast , they are working on solid fuel cell and other counterparts too ,might turn out to be best in world

Well we can't seriously expect them to put an unproven AIP module (with potentially explosive fuel-cells) on an actual submarine without any kind of at-sea testing. So far the MAREEM has only seen shore-based testing and will have to conduct underwater tests on a pontoon or something before going on Scorpenes.

any idea which design is this?
Shortfin Barracuda
The one in glass case? That's a Triomphant-class SSBN.

Ya'll Nibbiara the earlier design posted by the @Gesslar nibba has some similaritries with the Shortfin may be a derivatives but I may be wrong.
I can definitely see some Naval Group influence in design, but if those are really VLS cells and/or a LOX tank for fuel cell AIP, then it can't be Shortfin as it has neither.

Fair enough....subs are serious business and DRDO needs to prove above and beyond doubt.

India to appoint National Maritime Security Coordinator for maritime security

The appointment of NMSC fills the need of the hour as the Navy, Coast Guard and state maritime boards all tend to work in silos with overlapping jurisdictions and are constantly at odds with each other.

Indian Navy Comes Aboard For Massive Indigenous Multi-Role Chopper Development Project

Called the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH), the plan is said to have been progressing as per schedule. The scale model testing has already been completed successfully and the first test flight is expected by 2025-26. The next stage where the prototypes are to be built will require a fund infusion for the estimated Rs 10,000 crore into the project.

Another P8i from Boeing lands in Goa! Will boost Indian Navy’s Maritime Reconnaissance Capabilities

On Tuesday, US based Boeing Company delivered the 10th P8i long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft with anti-submarine warfare capabilities. This is the second aircraft which has been delivered under an option contract for four additional aircraft that the Ministry of Defence had awarded to the Company in 2016. As has been reported earlier, when the company was awarded the initial contract, Indian Navy became its first international customer for P-8 and today it is operating the largest non-US fleet.
