Indian Navy accepts first batch of two MH-60r Multi Role Helicopters (MRH)

Indian Navy accepted the first two of its MH-60R Multi Role Helicopters (MRH) from US Navy in a ceremony held at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego on 16 Jul 21. The ceremony marked the formal transfer of these helicopters from US Navy to Indian Navy, which were accepted by His Excellency Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Indian Ambassador to USA. The ceremony also witnessed exchange of helicopter documents between Vice Adm Kenneth Whitesell, Commander Naval Air Forces, US Navy and Vice Adm Ravneet Singh, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (DCNS), Indian Navy.

MH-60R helicopters manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corporation, USA is an all-weather helicopter designed to support multiple missions with state of the art avionics/ sensors. 24 of these helicopters are being procured under Foreign Military Sales from the US Government. The helicopters would also be modified with several India Unique Equipment and weapons.





The induction of these MRH would further enhance Indian Navy’s three dimensional capabilities. In order to exploit these potent helicopters, the first batch of Indian crew is presently undergoing training in USA.

Navy, Coast Guard get new 12.7mm M2 heavy machine guns


Tiruchirapalli-based Ordnance Factory on Saturday handed over a total of 25 12.7mm M2 NATO standard heavy machine guns or the stabilised remote control gun system to the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, amidst its restructuring process.


Of these, 15 guns were handed over to the Indian Navy while 10 to the Indian Coast Guard.


Manufactured under the Transfer of Technology agreement from Israeli weapon maker Elbit Systems, the guns are meant for marine applications and can remotely engage targets.

Designed and developed in-house, the SOV 400 will be capable of carrying a crew of ten along with the ten more special operations troops. The submarine is positioned to provide smaller navies with constrained budgets an asymmetric capability. The vessel will be utilized to deploy and recover special forces while submerged for intelligences, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) as well as sabotage, rescue and evacuation missions."

The vessel will carry two heavyweight torpedoes outside the pressure hull for shallow-water attacks. It will be able to dive to depths greater than 100 m and travel up to 2000 nautical miles(3704 km). SOV-400 can also be carried by conventional submarines to be deployed as per mission requirements.

The 44 m long, 490 ton displacement midget submarine will have an endurance of 21 days and be able to traverse submerged for 80 nm and cruise for 2000 nm at a speed of 4 knots. Two 400 kWe generators will charge two 4 Mha lead-acid batteries. These will power a 300 kW electric motor to provide propulsion for the submarine."

A lock-in lock-out chamber will separate the two hulls of the submarine with crew and special forces personnel, combat information centre and battery banks accommodated in the forward compartment. The aft section containing machinery will be unmanned. Automation of the submarine operation will enable minimal manual operation of the submarine.

Apart from its small size and greater than 100 m operational depth, the submarine will utilise slow-turning propellers with sweptback blades and special damped mounts for machinery to achieve underwater stealth. Hull structures will be made from indigenously developed DMR 249 steel. Batteries, torpedo tubes, paints, coatings, pipes, valves, switchgear, cables, AC plants, compressors etc. will all be sourced from India.

Diesel generators will be sourced from Isotta Fraschini Motori. The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) will be sourced from Jeumont which supplies multiphase AC synchronous propulsion motors for the French Scorpene submarines. Swimmer delivery vehicle (SDV), sonar, periscope, electronic support measures (ESM), snorkel masts will also be sourced from abroad. This split once again brings to light, the need for investments and orders for domestic products to enable production of such hi-tech sub-systems in India.

While the current variant utilizes lead-acid batteries, an advanced variant with lithium-ion batteries is being developed. Apart from the Indian Navy which plans to buy such vessels, there also exists a market for such submarines in navies of friendly countries.

Preliminary design for the program has been completed and in-principle approval by DNV GL is awaited. L&T intends to complete model testing this year."

The Navy initially planned to get five such vessels with an option to buy more later. In 2015 the Ministry of Defence finally decided to contract Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) to construct two Strategic Operating Vessels (SOVs) at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore. After other shipyards like L&T objected to this move for not offering them an even playing field, the program floundered. It remains to be seen if the SOV 400 will finally fulfil the Indian Navy’s midget submarine requirements. "

Ya'll Nibbiars I think it's Range, Crew Size, displacement, Endurance could be greater than stated.

Ya'll Nibbiars this is just speculation's but I think.

Displacment : Greater than 600 tons.

Endurance : 30 days atleats.

Range : Greater than 5,000 Km.

Crew : Atleast more than 20.

Sensors : Various atleast 12.

EWS : Yes.

Test Depth : Greater than 200 meters.

Armamnet : 4 to 6 Torpedo/ Missiles and 2 SDV's. 24 mines carried externally.

Why is there a great difference between submerged range and cruising range ??

@FalconZero @Gessler do any of you know how muvh space do we have on kolkata , vizag , shivalik , nilgiri etc respectively and talwar too for vlsrsam .

And what are dimensions of barak 8 vls and brahmos vls , can we get our own sm 3 type missile if we make it

Kolkata/Vizag class DDG seems to have enough space in between the Barak 8 VLS cells and Brahmos UVLM to house anywhere from 16-24 VL-SRSAM VLS cells.
Shivalik class will have to rip out the old single arm Shtil-1 launcher to make space for VLS cells, similar to how the Russians adopted VLS cells instead of arm launcher for their Admiral Grigorovich class frigates which are similar to our Talwar class frigates.
P17A frigate's design is somewhat similar to the Kolkata class and looking at the renders, there seems to be enough space for 32 VL-SRSAM VLS cells in the front section

That will be the most fearsome ddg of in , hope we take up bigger superstructure design so can pack up more missile in same tonnage , present one is too flat
