There shouldn't be the engine and gun-related delays as was the case with P15B. The engine is locally made through license and Gun has been finalized - BAE mark45
The engines are locally assembled, not made. India doesn't make Naval engines of diesel above 3MW and Turbofan above 12MW. THE 10-12MW Diesel engine and 25MW gas turbine engines are imported or assembled under license.

New Delhi, May 13

In what will be a significant step towards India’s ‘Act East policy’, India and Vietnam will conduct their first bilateral naval exercise later this month, marking the continued upswing in relations.

The exercise will be conducted in Vietnamese waters in May-end. The exercise will be conducted in what China’s considers its backyard. To put it in perspective, it’s like the navies of China and Bangladesh practising in Bay of Bengal.

A flotilla of three Indian warships — INS Shayadri, INS Kamorta and INS Shakti — is on its way to Vietnam, sources said while confirming the first-ever bilateral exercise at sea. Two of these ships on Sunday reached Thailand on a separate visit and one reached Malaysia. The warships will go to Vietnam before heading to the Pacific Ocean for a joint exercise called ‘Malabar’ with the US and Japanese navies.

The naval exercise comes just four months after the armies of the two countries conducted their first-ever land–based exercise in January-end this year at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

India-Vietnam relations have gained momentum in the past decade. In November 2009, the two countries had signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation. This was preceded by strategic partnership agreement in 2007.

During PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Vietnam in 2016, the bilateral relationship was elevated from a ‘strategic partnership’ to a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership’. Modi had, in his first year in office in 2014, said: “Our defence cooperation with Vietnam is among our most important ones.”

India is already training the Vietnamese navy in operating its small fleet of Russian-origin Kilo-class subs and has announced an increase in its efforts to train more personnel. India and Vietnam have set a target of $15 billion in bilateral trade by 2020, from $7 billion at present.

WHY it’s significant

  • Vietnam is one of the six countries locked in a maritime territorial dispute with China in hydro-carbon rich South China Sea
  • Its seabed holds trillions of cubic feet of gas and billions of barrels of crude oil
  • Indian warships INS Shayadri, INS Kamorta and INS Shakti will participate in the exercise

Refuelling barge for INS Vikramaditya launched

A refuelling barge specially designed for carrying fuel mid-sea to Indian Navy's flagship aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya was launched here today.

The privately built fuel barge with a capacity of 1000 tonnes was launched about 10 days ahead of schedule, Vice Admiral M S Pawar, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, said at a ceremony at Titagarh Shipyard on the banks of River Hooghly.

The fuel barge will depart for Mumbai dockyard ofIndian Navy for delivery following various trials of machinery and speed, J P Chowdhury, chairman of Titagarh Wagons Limited (TWL) that manufactured the specialised vessel, said.

"Fuel Barge 14 has been specially designed for carrying fuel mid-sea to INS Vikramaditya, Indian Navy's flagship aircraft carrier," Chowdhury said.

"It may be a small step in warship building activity in the country, but it is a giant leap for private ship building in India for the Indian Navy," Vice Admiral Pawar said.

He said that the barge has collapsible masts to cope with the huge overhangs of an aircraft carrier.

The availability of the fuel barge would mean that it can carry fuel for the huge aircraft carrier as well as for the warplanes on it at an anchorage away from the Mumbai port, a senior Navy official said.

The construction of the barge had started on May 9, 2017, TWL sources said.

"TWL is building another 1000 tonne fuel barge for the Navy, which is scheduled to be launched in July 2018," Chowdhury said.

Two other vessels would also be built by TWL thereafter at the Titagarh Shipyard for Ministry of Earth Sciences for research and exploration purposes, he said.

Role : Observations.
Location : INS Dega , Vizag / Visakhapatnam
Sub : Strange Activity.
Civil Air services were stalled for about 1 hour. 3 Mi-17 , one modern boeing made Dolphin hunter and few Dornier sorties were spotted this evening. Sadly at that time mom talking on my mobile so I couldn't take shots of Mi-17 and Dolphin hunter. But managed to capture Last dornier aircraft approaching for landing.
Anything special taking place ?
Hunter and group of Russian birds arriving with few minutes apart has raised curiosity in me.
My home is just 2.6 km away from Airport. One can spot Indian navy ATC from my apartment terrace.

Indonesia gives India access to strategic port of Sabang

Sabang, also known as Weh island, is located 710 km southeast of the Andaman Islands and less than 500 km from the entrance of the Malacca Strait, through which almost 40% of India’s trade passes.

Indonesia has agreed to give India economic and military access to the strategic island of Sabang at the northern tip of Sumatra and close to the Malacca Strait, an Indonesian minister said on Thursday.

Luhut Pandjaitan, Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime affairs and a former military officer, said India will invest in the port and economic zone of Sabang and build a hospital.

He noted the port’s 40-metre depth is good for all types of vessels, “including submarines”. In time, he said, the coast guards of the two countries could also work together.

Sabang, also known as Weh island, is located 710 km southeast of the Andaman Islands and less than 500 km from the entrance of the Malacca Strait, through which almost 40% of India’s trade passes.

Pandjaitan made the remarks while speaking on India-Indonesia maritime cooperation at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi, days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia on May 31.

An Indonesian official accompanying Pandjaitan said his understanding was that besides development of the port, Indian naval ships would be allowed to visit Sabang under the understanding.

“It’s a verbal understanding at this stage. The Indonesian side will hold a meeting next week to seek ways to turn it into a reality,” said another official familiar with discussions on the issue.

An Indian diplomat, who didn’t want to be named, said the Sabang arrangement would “logically follow the Act East policy of the government”.

The Malacca Strait is considered one of six choke points, or narrow channels, along widely used global sea routes. They are critical for global energy security because of the high volume of oil transported through narrow straits. At least 15 million bpd of oil flows through the Malacca Strait from West Asia and West Africa.

India and Indonesia began exploring the idea of developing Sabang in 2014-15, said India’s former envoy to Indonesia, Gurjit Singh. However, the economic viability of the port was questioned.

Common concerns about Chinese assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region have led both governments to again take up the island-port’s development.

Pandjaitan outlined the reasons for closer bilateral cooperation. He was critical of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, saying: “We do not want to be controlled by BRI.” He also questioned China’s unilateral claims on the South China Sea, noting this includes parts of Indonesia’s maritime exclusive economic zone.

Indonesia had positioned a plan called the “global maritime fulcrum” that is “designed to balance the BRI”, he said. Indonesia and India are big enough that “we don’t have to lean towards any superpower, and this makes India a sensible partner for Indonesia”, he added.

Pandjaitan said the two countries, which held naval exercises most recently in 2017, should also cooperate in counter-terrorism initiatives and maritime safety.

This marks a major shift in Indonesia’s attitude towards China and India. Until recently, Jakarta had been reluctant to seek strategic alignment with New Delhi and was in two minds about Beijing’s role in the region.

The Sabang arrangement will seal a new strategic partnership in the Indian Ocean. Admitting that Indonesia had ignored the Indian Ocean until recently, Pandjaitan said, “India and Indonesia relations are important to the balance of power in Asia.”

The situation at this port is like the situation with the airport at Hambambota, Sri Lanka. India will invest simply to keep the Chinese out. The port is being offered to India now but if we decline there is no guarantee it will not be offered to China as they are one of the few Asian actors with the money and expertise to develop the port.

We did this in Sri Lanka where we bought a stake in the nearly empty Hambambota international airport to block the Chinese from making any potential use of the port for an FOB for PLAN because one of the critical factors of operating a foreign FOB is connectivity by air, which India ostensibly cut off.

I guess main positive development to take away from this is that states in the western Pacific are seeing India as an ally worth defying China for. Previously many such states where afraid to engage with india for fear of offending China.

INS Tarini will be back on Indian soil on Monday!!!

wouldn't it be nice if boats available in GOA go ahead and escort them from the sea back to the shore. it would be a nice photo-op if navy can muster 100-200 boats for escort in the last leg.

i am sure aerial footage and photos would look amazing.

Okay, coming up are a series of photos of a whale shark and ya baby escorting INS Tarini.back home. Truly amazing pictures.

That is not a baby but remora. Remora are symbiotic fishes which eat the parasites, excreta and worms from the whale's body for its survival and helps whale lead healthy life.
