Vice Admiral Robin K Dhowan is the new Navy chief

Delhi: Vice Admiral Robin K Dhowan is the new chief of the Indian Navy. His appointment has been cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Vice Admiral Dhowan had taken over as the acting Naval Chief on February 26 after the incumbent, DK Joshi put in his papers owning "moral responsibility" for a series of accidents. Vice Admiral Dhowan, who would have otherwise retired on May 31, will now serve for an additional two years. Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, currently the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Western Naval Command, based in Mumbai, is senior to Vice Admiral Dhowan. He was tipped to be the next Navy Chief but a majority of the accidents that have plagued the Navy in the 7-8 months, have taken place in the Western Naval Command. Vice Admiral Dhowan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and has served in various operational and staff appointments. However, he hasn't headed an operational command, seen as a prerequisite for becoming the Navy Chief. As the new Naval Chief, Vice Admiral Dhowan will be confronted with the challenge of navigating the Indian Navy through very trying times. In March, a Commander-rank officer was killed in an accident on board a yet-to-be-operational Kolkata class destroyer. In February, two officers were killed in a fire that broke out aboard submarine INS Sindhuratna off the coast of Mumbai. In August last year, another submarine, INS Sindhurakshak sank in the Mumbai harbour after an explosion, killing 18 sailors.

Indian naval ships visit Thailand

Bangkok: Four Indian naval ships visited Thailand's Phuket island, as part of a professional exchange cooperation programme, signalling a further boost in defence ties between the two countries which astride one of the strategic international maritime shipping lanes.

Naval exchanges form an important component of the overall bilateral cooperation between India and Thailand.

"The visit of the ships of the 1st Training Squadron of the Indian Navy to Royal Thai Navy has further enhanced the close cooperation and friendship that exists between the two navies, India's Ambassador to Thailand Harsh Vardhan Shringla told PTI.

HI I read few articles about our INS vikramaditya which actually lead to confusion ....
Though i belive that it was the best option available as IN chose it but still...

Source which made me happy wasINS Vikramaditya , The Indian Power at Sea INS Vikramaditya , The Indian Power at Sea

Which made me sad Choppy first ride home for INS Vikramaditya Choppy first ride home for INS Vikramaditya - Hindustan Times
also referring to 'INS Vikramaditya will be a game-changer' - The Times of India

Then there is again the issue of Cost which was increased and some suggest we could have had a new aircrafts carrier in app same cost though no with all the facilities of Vikramaditya ..?Though i doubt this information

But there is a long history of this aircraft carries having issues with the boilers then why did we go for it ...?

Navy Has Taken Serious Note of Mishaps: Naval Chief

The Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan today said that the Indian Navy has taken a 'serious note' of the recent accidents involving its submarines and the probe reports are in different stages. "Inquiry procedures are very detailed. These are different incidents. The inquiry reports are in different stages. Some submitted by command, some at examination at naval headquarters," the Naval chief, who is on a two day visit to Kerala, said in a brief interaction with media here. Responding to queries if probe reports on mishaps concerning naval ships and submarines had been submitted, he said, "What was important is that even before the probe report has been submitted, some 'stringent recommendations' have been made on measures to be taken and these have been communicated to every single platform of the Indian Navy including ships, submarines and aircraft." The intention is that we should operate these platforms in a professional manner to ensure that we follow procedures and see that we do not make mistakes, Dhowan said. About some reports quoting 'Q' branch police at Chennai that interrogation of a Sri Lankan national, a suspected ISI agent arrested recently, revealed that there were plans to attack the Southern Naval command and Ezhimala Naval academy, he said "We are always alert. We are a fighting force and we will always be alert to take on any contingency and the aspect of safety and security of our assets and personnel is of paramount importance."

Navy on high alert

Based on an intelligence report of possible terror attack, the Eastern Naval Command has declared 'State One' level of alertness here on Thursday. As per the order, the Navy has beefed up its security level at all its vital installations and vital points, under its command. As part of it, the security levels have also been heightened at INS Dega. INS Dega, which also forms part of the commercial airport, is also manned by the personnel from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). According to a CISF official, the security of the instrument landing system (ILS), Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the runway is taken care of by the Indian Navy, and the commercial aspects such as terminal building and passenger security are addressed by the CISF. Assistant Commandant of CISF A.K. Mitra told The Hindu that the CISF has been on red alert post the twin blasts on May 1 aboard the Bangalore-Guwahati Express, in Chennai . "The alert is continuing since then. All airports are put on high alert across the country, whenever there is a terrorist attack. And this has been a regular practice, people need not be alarmed," he said.

If this indeed is true, than somebody has to be held accountable. The incoming government has to set an example and take serious note of such cases and set bureaucratic accountability. This is a very serious threat to national security and war preparedness of the country.

Modi had declared to revamp defence procurement and one hopes he will do so in right earnest.

Just imagine! An aircraft carrier and a destroyer without AD missiles and a sunmarine without torpedoes! What next?

Why, this probably means that the Arihant is also without torpedoes! And what about the Kamortas? ASW corvettes without torpedoes! And what type of torpedoes are in the Kolkatas?

Hang somebody! Please!

In the interim, perhaps the Varunastra heavy torpedo is an option. The user trials were to have started this year. As per info, production can start within a year of completion of user trials.
How long the trials take and whether it passes the trials and fits navy requirement is however, another matter altogether.

This is so disheartening. And I am sure there are more such cases of the MoD. What I don't understand is the inaction of the service chiefs. Shouldn't they be pursueing such matters in right earnest? If they have an un-co operative bureacracy and a reluctant minister they should go to the commander in chief and the PM. Don't they have any balls?

I am going to forward such links/cases (as quoted) to my MP and to prominent parliamentarians and the standing parliamentary committee on defence when it is constituted.
And obviously to leading members of the new government particularly the PM and Def Min via twitter, facebook, email, petition ... you name it.
