India's Missile Defense: Is the Game Worth the Candle? | idrw.org

An Indian BMD system could also provoke a Chinese reaction.
LOL LOL  This statement in the article is really REALLY funny

I am reading a book on how an attempt was made to organize Tibetan resistance just when the Chicoms were taking over and at that time the Brits, Americans and India did not want to actively support Tibet because it might attract Chinese attention.

Guess what the Chinese did? They came anyway

The brainless idea that not developing BMD will somehow keep the Chinese happy shows the miserable lack of quality in these institutions that like to call themselves think tanks.

We would rather have sumthing and not need it, than need sumthing.....and not have it.

I thought that parts of the article were quite good, but agree that the comment on China did not make sense. There will be no nuclear war with China, as long as there is MAD (Mutually Assured Dedtruction). MAD is an effective doctrine provided that, per Game Theory, both parties are 'rational' and do not want to risk annihilation. MAD would work against the Chinese as although, the Chinese Communist party is belligerent, they are still rational. MAD presents a risk against Pakistan, as they are not rational - hence Kargil, Mumbai etc. Pakistanis are literally mad. Hence the BMD programme is essential to keep Pakistan in check and punish it the next time there is another Kargil, etc.

Raytheon continues Patriot push in India | idrw.org

SOURCE: SP's Special Correspondent

A decade after Raytheon first began its big push of the Patriot PAC-3 integrated air and missile defence system to India, the company remains committed to India as a potential customer. Raytheon CEO William Swanson recently described the PAC-3 as a "never-ending opportunity" and listed India as one of the countries that remained interested in the system and technology.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which describes the indigenous BMD project as equal to, if not better than the Patriot, has said the country doesn't need an imported system, but has indicated that it is willing to forge technological partnerships. Discussions have continued over the years at various levels in this regard. With the Indian system to be ready for deployment in the next 18 months, it remains to be seen what partnership DRDO will be looking for.

Interceptor missile test in the offing
The first phase of the defence system can destroy enemy missiles with a range of up to 2,000 km

As part of a bid to secure major cities of the country from external attacks, India's missile technologists will, for the first time ever, conduct a crucial, high-altitude interceptor missile test in the exo-atmosphere.

The exercise is part of the developmental trials for the first-phase of the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, designed to tackle incoming enemy missiles with a range of up to 2,000 km.

India plans to deploy in two phases a home-grown, two-tiered (interception in endo and exo-atmosphere) BMD system to protect major cities.

First phase

In the first phase, the BMD system seeks to intercept and destroy incoming enemy ballistic missiles with a range of up to 2,000 km. The second phase would aim at targeting missiles with a higher range of 2,000-5,000 km.

The first-ever high-altitude interception at around 125-140 km has been proposed, missile scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said.

Critical simulation tests were being carried out by scientists in the run-up to the major trial, to be held in the last week of November.

How it functions

Both the interceptor missile, the PDV, and the target missile would be totally new, two-stage missiles and equipped with advanced technologies.

Once the target missile is launched from a ship, the attacker missile, carrying a dual seeker, would try to waylay the incoming missile, destroy it in a "hit-to-kill" mission. Both missiles would be travelling at a speed of around 1500 metres per second at the time of interception.

However, one of the challenges during the trial, the scientists said, would be for the interceptor to discriminate between the booster and the payload once the first stage of the target missile gets separated.

Earlier, DRDO missile technologists have carried out exo-atmospheric interception at altitudes of 47 km and 80 km. So far, six of the seven interceptor missile tests conducted by DRDO have been successful. While two were in exo-atmosphere, the remaining took place in endo-atmosphere (above an altitude of 50 km).

DRDO scientists said that while endo-atmospheric interception had been validated in earlier tests, some more trials needed to be conducted before deploying the first phase of BMD system. They said the design of the interceptor missile for the second phase had been completed and the trials would be held next year.

Pls do as many tests as needed.

interesting part of the Hindu news is new target missile. It appears that they were concern about stage seperation, as they want to have average size RV for the test. PDV is good news.

Does Saraswat have the authority to make this statement. Does the system not have to go through Operational clearance first?
Is it reasonable that they can use PAD in live configuration given that it is not solid fuelled?
Is guess this answers my question from back in April. Phase 1 will be with PDV. interesting that they announced ready for roll out back in April, but they are still to do a test in November. Does anybody know if Delhi and Mumbai are already protected with PAD?

Indian scientists are capable to develop indigenous Technology and that should be done instead of spending billions in buying military hardware .

Technology transfer is done to stop that country for developing Indigenous technology .

On the contrary technology transfer allows us to study contemporary technology and move forwards on to newer ones. No point in reinventing the wheel, right now we must focus on reverse engineering everything we can get our hands to compensate for the 5 decade lag. No point in reinventing the wheel.

When technology is transferred , there are certain terms and conditions for the buyer side like copy rights of the technology etc in which the buyer cant work on that technology for a limited time etc.

International rules and guidelines are too tough when its about technology transfer from one country to another country

Technology transfrer entails deliverance of specifics such as manufacturing, designs etc. to the user. The product itself might come under the EUA however with ToT, we are being guaranteed thee technologies that went into making the product.

Sure there are some riders, but they aren't enough to offset the immense gains we make from gaining access to key technologies. I am opposed to buying foreign defense equipment off the shelf, however if the suppliers agree to provide us with the tech. and we can absorb it and implement it in our own industry, it is a massive win.

Right now India is having technology of the major arms exports .. Russians, Americans, British, French, Israelis etc , but have to move slowly and steadily . All the India's indigenous projects will be seen in the next coming 10 to 20 years .
