Come May, India will take a significant step towards operationalising its indigenous experimental Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD)system that can target incoming missiles with its owninterceptor missiles.
The system, which will provide India with the capability to counter missile threats from China and Pakistan, will be tested at 200-km altitude in May.
"We are preparing to test the interceptor missile at 200-km altitude this May," DRDO chief Dr V K Saraswat said here on Tuesday.
The DRDO is also preparing to operationalise the phase-Iof the BMD system to provide a missile shield to major cities including the national capital by 2014.

regarding bmd our home grown effort is a very well executed project. but well for protection against conventional atillery and rockets which pakis and chinese possess i think drdo should develop something like iron dome and david sling.

from big to small, first is big missile coming our way, then we will go to anti artillery/rockets and then anti tank type of things.

All in due time, as the senor become small and miniature, things will come through

An Israeli missile shield, which created some buzz in the defence ministry last year following its success in Gaza Strip, may not finally come to India, as the armed forces are not satisfied with its utility because of its short range.

Known as Iron Dome, it is an air defence system — meant to neutralise rockets and artillery cells fired from a distance of up to 70 km — which emerged as one of the world's most successful missile shields.

As the ministry was scouring the market for an effective missile cover for Delhi and Mumbai, Iron Dome caught its attention. Preliminary discussions were held with Israeli officials, too. But now, questions are being raised by the armed forces over its efficiency.
"Our challenges are bigger. We have to cover a bigger distance.

We have a dense airspace and a long border. Iron Dome is not the answer for our requirement," Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne, chief of Indian the Air Force and chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee, said at the airshow here on Thursday.

The Iron Dome system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defence System, is on display at the show along with the launchers, which drew curious crowd in the last three days.

Incidentally, this is one of the few pavilions, which Defence Minister A K Antony visited after inaugurating the airshow signifying Israel's importance as military supplier. Along with the USA and Russia, Israel is also one of the largest suppliers of military hardware to India.

"One of the highlights of this year's airshow, presented for the first time in India, is the Iron Dome system. This is an indigenously developed, game-changing, first-of-its-kind missile interception system.

It performed with notable distinction, protecting over half of Israel's population from a barrage of over 1,500 rockets and missiles," Israeli ambassador Alon Ushpiz said. Last year alone it neutralised more than 400 rocket attacks.

"We have seen the performance of Iron Dome in Gaza last year. It proved successful in that environment. But the system is still being fine-tuned and the Indian environment is different. Other systems like David's Sling are also being developed," Browne said.

Unlike the short-range Iron Dome, a longer-range defence system called David Sling, with an interceptor missile known as Stunner, is in the making. Only one trial had been carried out, but the two countries have begun preliminary discussions. The Stunner too is on display at the Bangalore airshow.

Saraswat, who has just been awarded the country's third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, said that DRDO had been able to develop key RF (radio frequency) seeker technologies for missiles in cooperation with Russia, and that in the last missile test, the seeker used was made in India. Digital processing in any case is based on DRDO's own software.

Without the seekers, a missile would be an aimless vehicle.

The RF and IR (infra red) seekers (?) are meant for proximity and precision engagement of targets, and both these technologies are required for the anti-ballistic missile (ABM) capability as well as all kinds of missiles. Saraswat did not give details but said that India also was working on seeker technologies with other countries. (who?)
As for an ABM shield, he said that DRDO had conducted four endo-atmospheric (within the atmosphere) and two exo-atmosphere (outside the atmosphere) missile interception tests and that all six had been successful. "We certainly need more tests but we can say we have been successful in developing this capability."

The last one, designated Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile, and fired on November 23, was in fact a hit-to-kill test.

So far, DRDO has mostly been working on proximity, near-miss or zero-miss acquisition of targets. With these systems, an ABM missile blows itself up some nine metres from its targets. From now on, the effort will be to develop the hit-to-kill capability by directly impacting hostile targets.

US comments from the recent Chinese missile test

China launched a rocket into space on Monday, but no objects were placed into orbit, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. The object re-entered Earth's atmosphere above the Indian Ocean.

"We tracked several objects during the flight but did not observe the insertion of any objects into orbit and no objects associated with this launch remain in space," said Lieutenant Colonel Monica Matoush, a Pentagon spokeswoman.

Many years ago i saw one programme where in they have tracked some object going out of earth atmosphere, that time i was wondering why on earth US military keep personals deputed for such kind of work, specially to keep tab on this that go out of our atmosphere.

One more thing, if Chinese test their missile which is being tracked by US, then Uncle also track our missile and BMD tests.

Many years ago i saw one programme where in they have tracked some object going out of earth atmosphere, that time i was wondering why on earth US military keep personals deputed for such kind of work, specially to keep tab on this that go out of our atmosphere.

One more thing, if Chinese test their missile which is being tracked by US, then Uncle also track our missile and BMD tests.
That is the reason Uncle Sam wants to have a joint research and development with INDIA into the area of BMD.......

India to use geo-stationery satellites for missile defence

KOCHI: India has launched an ambitious programme to use its array of geo-stationary satellites (G-sats) to monitor missile activities in an area of 6,000 km. With this, the country's constellation of G-sats will become the first line of defence in its anti-missile shield. This programme is independent of the observation grid installed by defence and intelligence agencies. The advantage of using geo-stationary satellites is their fixed position at a height of 36,000 km and synchronised with the earth's movement.

Allaying fears that this deployment could compromise India's space policy, sources clarified that it is not meant as an offensive posture and data won't be shared with any other country. "We're using these satellites to warn us of an impending danger even as they continue with their primary tasks of transmission and meteorological observations," sources said.

A top source told TOI that special lens and processing electronics are being developed to significantly improve the power of G-sat cameras and telescope. "The Centre has given ISRO the go-ahead. The programme is into a crucial development phase,'' he said.

The project is aimed at installing sensitive surveillance equipment along with other payload on the G-sats. "They will capture the signature of any missile launch activities happening in a radius of 6,000 km.This signature will be transmitted to a central control unit which would initiate necessary counter-mechanism," sources said.

The Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing the interceptor missile which has entered trial phase. "Given their strategic position, we can even have exclusive facility to monitor a country or a particular region. Given the G-sat's capability to map anything to a resolution of one metre, we will be able to capture the slightest of movements or even heat signatures,'' sources said.
