Opinion: Why terrorists specifically attack Indian army camps

Major Amit Bansal

Since the NDA government came to power in the centre, we have noticed two major things related to terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The first is an all-out integrated approach to target terrorists and neutralise them under "Operation All Out” and second is the reaction of the terrorist outfits in the form of increased frequency of attacks on the camps of the security forces.

Under "Operation All Out” all the stakeholders, including Special Forces, Army, Rashtriya Rifles, Paramilitary forces and Jammu and Kashmir Police are acting as a joint team not only to neutralise the terrorists, they had also been successfully handling stone pelters in the valley. The joint operation yielded very good results and, in 2017 alone, more than 213 terrorists were killed by the security forces which gave a big blow to the aspirations of people across the border.

This was a matter of serious concern for Pakistan ISI as well as the terrorist organisations like Lashkar-E- Taiyaba, Jaish-e- Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen. “Operation All Out” not only gave a major blow to the Pak sponsored terrorism but also lowered the morale of the terror outfits. There was a time when no one was ready to take over the top position in the terror group as many of the newly joined recruits from Kashmir were killed by the security forces.

Pak Army was also worried over the Indian Army and the BSF's response to retaliatory firing at border posts and growing casualties of its men. They were finding it difficult to carry out the old strategy of BAT and sniper attacks on Indian personnel as forces were giving befitting responses. More than 138 Pakistani soldiers were killed when Indian forces strongly retaliated at the ceasefire violation caused by them. ISI too had a serious concern and that’s why the Pakistani authorities called for a meeting of the ISI and leaders of various terror outfits at Rawalpindi in the last week of December 2017. Members of the ISI, Pak Army, Hafiz Sayeed, Massoud Azhar and other representatives of Hizbul Mujahideen participated in the same.

Their prime worry was low morale of their cadres and difficulties in recruitment of fresh terrorists from Kashmir. During the meeting, they worked out a two-pronged strategy. Firstly, to infiltrate militants under heavy cover of LoC firing to support Kashmiri militants and, secondly, to weaken the morale and operation capacity of SF by attacking their convoys and camps.

Indian agencies which had the knowledge of the meeting have begun their counter preparations to tackle fresh designs of attacks from the ISI in the coming months. Indian intelligence agencies confirmed the news of this meeting and the same was further confirmed on 5th January 2018 when IGP of CRPF, Ravideep Singh Sahi revealed that in near future terrorists are going to resort to a new kind of tactics which will include standoff attacks on security forces, hit and run as well as grenade lobbying.

This new tactic was aimed to address some of the concern of the Pakistan Army and the ISI.

• The very first aspect was to compel security forces to adopt a defensive strategy in separation from the existing offensive one, thus, saving their cadres from being killed mercilessly.

• Secondly, because these attacks will be carried on in areas full of sympathisers, it would have helped in ushering the morale of their cadres.

• They thought that this hit and run tactics will save their cadres from getting killed easily and there will be more chances of damage to the security forces.

• Putting IEDs on the routes frequented by security forces will slow their movements and they will now be more cautious. This will affect the speed and agility of the forces by which they were attacking the terrorists by now.

• Praising and popularising such attacks through Islamic radicals and their recruiters in the valley to facilitate new recruitments.

• Attacking military installations will affect the morale of the security forces too.

The terror outfits soon started to perform as per the new tactics of their masters as is evident from the number of attacks carried out in 2018 itself. There has been a total of 22 attacks in just 44 days which means one attack every alternate day. Most of the attacks are hit and run type and were targeted to lower the speed of the security forces. The suicide (Fidayeen) attack on the camps were majorly targeted to lower the morale and cause a panic in the families of the soldiers.

So, with the changing strategy of the terror outfits, the security forces have also changed their tactics and started acting accordingly. The recent attacks on CRPF Headquarters in Srinagar and Damana in Jammu were successfully thwarted.

As far as the attack on Sunjuwan camp is concerned, my personal take is the security forces did a wonderful job. I had seen several suicide (Fidayeen) attacks in the past and know about their planning and intensity. The way this attack was immediately detected and repulsed with minimal casualties, the security forces deserve an applause. While we salute our martyrs, who laid down their lives in this attack, the overall operation will definitely be called a success. We must keep the fact in mind that the terrorists were supported by locals and were holed up in a built-up area full of the families of soldiers and all of them were unarmed.

With all these sequence of events, one thing is absolutely clear that the morale of terrorists as well as their masters sitting across is breaking down. They are looking for ways and means to keep this movement going but finding it difficult. The cracking down on separatists, their financial network as well as over ground workers (OGWs) is making the task furthermore complicated.

The need of the day is now a final blow to the terror camps across the Line of Control. India must break the so-called sanctity of the Line of Control because the area across LoC belongs to us and we have full rights to thwart any unlawful activity from that area. This is the right time and right momentum and just need a strong political will. A perfectly planned and executed action now will certainly give lot of tactical and strategic mileage to the Indian security forces.

On eve of inter-Korean summit, Indian Army's 'forgotten' role in Korean war

On Friday, the world will watch when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meets South Korean President Moon Jae-In in the Panmunjom village in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides both their countries.

Also keeping a watchful eye on this Inter Korean Summit will be India - a country whose role in bringing the Korean War to an end in 1953 was recognized internationally at that time with even United Nations observers having paid tributes to India's voice that had called for moderation to end the crisis.

And that's why it's important to recall another chapter in India's involvement in the Korean war which is relatively less known, almost forgotten - that of an Indian Army's medical unit which treated 2.2 lakh patients during the war and that of a Brigade Group which was instrumental in assisting in the repatriation or migration of 25,000 Prisoners of War.

Korea invaded South Korea in 1950 and the Korean War continued till 1953. And while it declined to get involved militarily in that conflict, India offered medical aid and deployed an Army Medical Unit in South Korea.

Indian Army 60th Parachute Field Ambulance Unit that served in South Korea had 627 personnel in all. It treated over 2.2 lakh patients including civilians during the Korean war.

No wonder, it earned laurels from the Korean people for its efforts. During its stint there, the 60th Parachute Field Ambulance Unit suffered three fatal and 23 non-fatal casualties.

Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel A.G. Rangaraj, the 60th Parachute Field Ambulance Unit disembarked at Pusan in November 1950 and was initially deployed at Pyongyang.

The Unit was then divided into two sub units. The first was the 'Forward Element' which was grouped with 27 British Brigade and the "Administrative Element" located at Daegu to assist the Korean Army Hospital and also treat civilians.

It was this "Forward Element" which was in the thick of action including a major airlift called "Op Tomahawk" with the 8th US Army in March 1953 in the area of Munsan.

When the Korean War finally ended with an Armistice agreement in July 1953, the members of the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission (NNRC) selected India to head this body to supervise the exchange of Prisoners of War (POWs).

India dispatched a Brigade Group having 5,230 personnel to Korea. This Brigade group was named Custodian Forces-India (CFI). It was then that 60th Indian Field Ambulance Unit was merged with the CFI as the latter took charge of over 25,000 Prisoners of War to assist in their repatriation.

The POWs who refused to be repatriated were then assisted in migration to neutral nations of their choice by the CFI. It's professional conduct won the CFI widespread respect among the Korean people.

This brigade is now known as Korea Brigade.

This brigade is now known as Korea Brigade.
Not only that - because of India's conduct during the war- India became the Key Arbitrator that lead the ceasefire negotiation. The success of India's "Korean Adventure" made India and overnight Diplomatic Power which lead to the formation of (india led) non aligned movement.

Probably the greatest Achievement of the Nehru Goverment - Honestly no matter your opinion of the man - it was a master stroke of military and soft diplomacy that still holds India in good sted today.

Indian Army rescues over 2,500 stranded tourists in Sikkim
The tourists were returning from the India-China border at Nathula

The Army has rescued over 2,500 tourists stranded near the 17th Mile area in east Sikkim, close to the India-China border, because of heavy snowfall, officials said on Saturday.

The tourists were returning from Nathu La pass and Tsomgo (Changu) Lake on Friday evening when snowfall blocked roads, leaving 300-400 vehicles stranded at various points on Jawahar Lal Nehru Road, East Sikkim District Magistrate Kapil Meena said. He said the Army swung into action and rescued the tourists. They were brought to a camp in the 17th Mile area and served food and medicines. Arrangements were being made to transfer the tourists to the State capital.

Here's what the tourists had to say......

Delhi: War memorial ready, 60 years after it was first proposed
TNN | Jan 1, 2019, 03.00 AM IST

NEW DELHI: “When you go home, tell them of us, and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today”. This evocative eulogy to soldiers who make the supreme sacrifice to defend their country is all set to resonate in the New Year.

The National War Memorial (NWM) is now finally ready, around 60 years after it was first proposed by the armed forces and remained stuck in general politico-bureaucratic apathy, to honour the over 22,600 soldiers who have laid down their lives in wars and operations since Independence. Defence officials say Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the “world-class” NWM, adjoining the India Gate complex on the majestic Rajpath in the capital, on January 25. “India was probably the only major country not to have a NWM,” said a senior officer.

“The life of an Indian soldier, after all, comes dirt cheap. The NWM will finally fulfil this long-pending emotional demand of the armed forces, which over the years successfully resisted moves to shift it elsewhere or to the outskirts of Delhi,” he added.

India Gate itself was constructed by the British in memory of the 84,000 Indian soldiers killed fighting for the Empire in World War-I and the Afghan campaign, with the Amar Jawan Jyoti later being built under its arch to honour the 3,843 soldiers who died liberating Bangladesh in 1971.

The NWM, built at a cost of Rs 176 crore after being approved by the government in October 2015, was initially slated for inauguration on August 15 in 2018, but missed its deadline for completion. Built in keeping with the “aesthetics and sanctity” of the Central Vista and India Gate, it has a layout of four landscaped concentric circles spread over 40 acres.

The Amar Chakra (circle of immortality), Veer Chakra (circle of bravery), Tyag Chakra (circle of sacrifice) and Rakshak Chakra (circle of protection) will include a 15-metre tall central obelisk with the eternal flame, bronze murals, graphic panels, inscription of names of martyrs and busts of the 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees, as earlier reported by TOI. “The NWM, with a central congregation space, has been designed to ensure it does not obstruct the existing layout of Rajpath and its iconic structures,” said the official.

‘Come back before sunrise’, PM Narendra Modi was anxious about safety of soldiers during Surgical Strikes
The Surgical Strike was planned in response to the terror attack at Uri which resulted in the deaths of 20 soldiers. Modi said that there was a "rage" building within him, similar sentiments also prevailed in the Army.

January 1, 2019

Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Engagements325

In an interview to ANI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has opened up about the Surgical Strikes in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir perhaps for the first time. Modi revealed that the date of the strikes on terror camps was changed twice due to safety and security issues.

The Surgical Strike was planned in response to the terror attack at Uri which resulted in the deaths of 20 soldiers. Modi said that there was a “rage” building within him, similar sentiments also prevailed in the Army as there were soldiers who were burnt alive in the attack at Uri. Hence, the strikes were planned.

The Prime Minister said, “That incident made me restless and there was rage within me. I had gone to Kerala and made a mention of this. Because I could not stop myself.”

The Prime Minister also revealed that he issued clear instructions that the operation should be over by sunrise. He also mentioned that he was up all night receiving live information as he was extremely worried about the safety of the soldiers. He said, “I gave clear orders that whether you get success or failure, don’t think about that but come back before sunrise. Don’t fall for the lure and prolong it.”

Modi said that he didn’t want any harm to befall the commandos as they were “willing to sacrifice their lives on our word.” He also revealed a moment in time when he became “anxious”. It was when the flow of information stopped for about an hour in the morning.

“In the morning, information flow stopped, for an hour. My anxiety increased. Even one hour after sunrise. That time was extremely difficult for me… then came the information that they have not reached back yet but two-three units have reached the safe-zone, so don’t worry. But I said I won’t be safe till the last man returns.”

Answering a question on the politicization of the Surgical Strikes, Prime Minister Modi said that it was started by the Opposition who started peddling the Pakistani narrative. Modi said, “It was necessary for Pakistan to speak like this (denial), to keep their morale intact. But what Pakistan was saying, was being said here too. To lend weight to their views, they were citing the Pakistani version. Politicization started from that point.”

As we had reported earlier, Arvind Kejriwal’s demand for providing video proof of surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army had found backers across the border when Pakistanis had come out in support of Kejriwal.

Pakistan had been vehemently denying the occurrence of surgical strikes on its soil by Indian armed forces in 2016, in which approximately 40 Terrorists were killed when Indian Army personnel ambushed 4 terror launchpads and subsequently destroyed them. Indian Armed forces have already put out videos corroborating their claim of conducting a successful Surgical Strike deep inside Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

The Prime Minister also asserted that it would be “big mistake” to think that Pakistan will mend its ways after a single surgical strike. It would take a long time for them to start behaving themselves, he said. He also said that the Army was given a “free hand” to plan and execute the surgical strikes and all necessary equipment was provided.

The Surgical Strikes have also provided the inspiration for a Bollywood movie set to release on the 11th of January: Uri

Russia screws up Korea’s arms sales to India

http://mengnews.joins.com/view.aspx?aid=3057687

Russians r forcing India to buy their inferior short range anti aircraft missiles using dirty tricks
Its not the Russian who is building pressure, but SoKo is doing it with this sort of news. Even the American mouthpiece V Raghuvanshi agrees.

However, a senior Indian Army official said both the upgraded Tunguska system fielded by Almaz Ante and Pantsir by KBP Tula systems were not fully compliant during the trials. The program calls for procurement of five regiments, or 104 systems, of gun missiles systems, including 4,928 missiles and 172,260 rounds of ammunition costing $1.6 billion. The winner will have to provide full maintenance technology transfer for missiles to state-owned Ordnance Factory Board. The proposed gun and missile system should have a day and night camera functionality and a built-in simulator, and the gun should engage a target at 350 rounds per second, while the missile should have a range of five kilometers. The system should be able to operate up to 50 kilometers on a single fuel tank, and should have a minimum operation endurance of eight hours without refueling.

SoKo is going bonkers here.

But if the SoKo System was indeed superior and won out (keeping in mind that the Indian Army Got to see the Performance of the Panstir and Tunguska performance in Syria) then we should not be holding this up.

These systems are critical to the IBG offensive capability

Actually no one is holding this up. SoKo and US are trying to build up pressure in their own sweet way. Russia on other hand is objecting to some of the tests which they didn't qualify. They have the very right to do that. Remember that SoKo too complained when they were disqualified in the Carbine deal.

But Russia would hold edge anyway as IA is well versed with Pantsir system. Being a user, first preference would be given to the well known and used system rather then a complete new one. E.g VSHORAD. But as of now IA has not shown any such tendency.

Fair - But didnt understand the point regarding SoKo pressure: - they won the contract. Anybody would defend it correct?

Ru has the right to process. and the IA/MOD has the right to say done deal and move on.

Russia ofcourse has the ability to protest in places where they have more leverage?!

Point is....... SoKo is desperate for the deal to be signed. As I said, Pantsir holds the edge of being a system which is in use with IA. So SoKo wants to build up the pressure keeping in mind the current nonsense going on in Indian politics over Rafael deal.

Russian equipment failed to match the performance of the SK systems. Thats the point. Russians using other ways to scuttle these deal can be called as arm twisting tactics
