Barring some bumps here and there, Mirage 2000I/TI looks quite similar to Tejas MK-1. Is it accidental or intentional??

With Defence Aerospace reporting that Italian prosecutors have dropped the final 2 outstanding charges against Finmeccanica executives, another sorry and ridiculous chapter in our country's long history of defense procurement cock-ups is seemingly heading towards the dustbin.

To quote from the article (can't post links yet!) , "By dropping the final charges still standing, the prosecution has acknowledged that it never had a valid case to prosecute, and that the two Finmeccanica executives were charged and put on trial on the uncorroborated allegations of a single person, Lorenzo Borgogni, who had been fired by Orsi....Although the charges are now known to be false, as many had maintained from the beginning, the two executives have nonetheless lost their jobs, the Indian government has canceled the €560 million contract, AgustaWestland has had to pay hundreds of million euros in surety and performance bonds, and countless people had had their reputations ruined...India is continuing its own investigations, and although having so far failed to find any evidence of bribery – which the Italian court says never happened – its Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation have not dropped charges against over a dozen people...Not a glorious episode for Italy's judicial system, nor for India's politicians who jumped the gun by canceling the contract with no evidence... investigations in Italy began after stories alleging bribery were published in the Indian media, sparked by parliamentary questions by a handful of MPs...Proponents of conspiracy theories could have a field day digging into when, how and with whose assistance this affair was artificially created, inflated and prosecuted"

I wonder if there will be any legal repercussions against the GOI for cancelling this contract and liquidating the damages on what has now proved to be false allegations. Whatever the outcome however it is without doubt that substantial damage has been done to our Armed Forces and to the MOD's already shot reputation in international procurement circles. If we weren't a laughing stock already...we surely will be now.

]An Mi-35 helicopter gunship of the Indian Air Force crashed while on a military exercise in Suratgarh, Rajasthan late on Friday night. All three crew were reported safe.

The gunship was taking off from a makeshift helipad on a night-flying mission when it crashed. The Mi-35 was part of an ongoing Exercise Brahmashira being undertaken by the Ambala-based 2 Corps. The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry.

The IAF operates two squadrons of the Russian-built Mi-25 and Mi-35 attack helicopters used to destroy enemy battle tanks, fortifications and transport special forces. Crashes of the helicopter are rare. The last reported Mi-35 crash was in Patnitop in Jammu on August 1, 1991

NEW DELHI: Indian fighter pilots are now planning to match their air combat skills with among the best in the world, first against their British counterparts this year and then against American top- guns next year. IAF pilots are gearing up to fly their Sukhoi-30MKI "air dominance" fighters and IL-78 mid-air refuellers to the UK to take on the Royal Air Force during the "Indra Dhanush" exercise, which is scheduled for July-August. But the real test of their skills will come if they take part in the world famous "Red Flag" exercise to be held in Alaska in the US in April next year. If the IAF does indeed get all the requisite clearances for the Red Flag exercise, it will be the second time for the force in the high-voltage, "network- centric" exercise. IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha on Monday left for a four- day visit to the US, during which he is slated to receive a detailed briefing on the Red Flag combat manoeuvres at the Nellis US Air Force base in Nevada, northwest of Las Vegas, among other consultations. It was in 2008 that the IAF had earlier participated in Red Flag at the Nellis airbase, which is considered the "mother" of all air combat exercises since it comes closest to realistic air combat without actually going to war. It was also the first time that the Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI fighters had flown over the American mainland. Though not quite familiar with operating in an AWACS (airborne warning and control systems) environment then, the IAF fighter pilots had performed quite well in the demanding exercise.

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha visits United States of America

IDR News Network
Issue Net Edition | Date : 18 May , 2015

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) and Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) has proceeded on a four day visit to the United States of America, today. The IAF Chief is visiting USA on the invitation of General Mark A. Welsh III, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force (USAF).

During the visit, Air Chief Marshal Raha is scheduled to hold talks with senior military leadership and discuss a wide range of bilateral issues on the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries. While at Washington, the Air Chief will also call on the Indian Ambassador H.E. Shri Arun Singh.

The itinerary also includes a conducted tour of airbases under Special Ops Command and a visit to the Combined Air Operations Centre at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada where he would be briefed on IAF participation in multi-lateral Air Exercises.

In recent years, there have been close and frequent contacts at political and military levels between the two countries. Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha’s visit to the US would further boost bilateral relations between the two Air Forces and is likely to provide greater convergence at the operational level.

New Delhi: World War II veteran Wing Commander Karun Krishna `Jumbo` Majumdar`s Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and bar will soon return to India, an officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF), which has bought the medals from a Britain-based auction house, said on Monday. Wg. Cdr. Majumdar, a daredevil fighter pilot, was the first Indian officer to be awarded the DFC and the only Indian to get a bar to the medal. He was killed on February 17, 1945 when his Hawker Hurricane stalled and crashed during an air show in Lyallpur. The medals were bought for around 31,000 pounds (around Rs.30 Lakhs), made available by the IAF from its its internal funds after the process to get the amount from defence ministry resulted in almost losing the medals. According to the IAF officer, the medals are presently with Indian High Commission`s Air Attache in London and will be soon brought to India. "We are working on the plan to bring the medals back. They are presently with the Air Attache in London," the officer told IANS. The medals were put up for auction by Majumdar`s son, who reportedly said he wanted them to "go to a serious collector". The medals on auction included Wg. Cdr. Majumdar`s Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and the Indian General Service Meddal awarded to him by the British government in the 1940s before India`s independence. However at an auction in November last year, the medals could not be sold as the reserve price for them was 20,000 to 30,000 pounds, but the highest bid received was in the region of 16,000 pounds. Later the IAF had entered into an agreement with London-based auction house Morton and Eden that it would internally raise the funds to buy the medals.

Parachuting woman officer lands on power line

A young woman officer of the Indian Air Force sustained burns after she landed on high-tension power supply lines when her parachute went astray during a para-sailing training at the Air Force Station in Tambaram on Wednesday morning.

Residents noticed the officer – Flight Lieutenant Mohana Chandra – hanging from the branch of a neem tree and crying for help around 6.30 a.m. About 15 minutes later, an IAF rescue team from Tambaram station came to her help, administered first aid at the station and rushed her to Military Hospital in St. Thomas Mount.

A senior IAF officer told The Hindu : “She was on her regular sortie when the gusty wind swept her off the campus. Her parachute went astray and came in contact with high tension wires. She is being treated now.” However, there was no official communication on the incident by the IAF.

Defence sources said Flt. Lt. Mohana and 20 others were undergoing training in para-sailing in the morning when strong winds swept her off course. (In para-sailing, a jeep pulls the participant, who has a parachute strapped at the back. The participant has to run for a distance once he or she gains enough height, the rope is removed).

Noticing her going away from the normal course, the IAF rescue team followed her and saw her hanging from the tree branch in Professor’s Colony. But before the rescue team could arrive, the officer tried to free herself, but touched the power supply cable, received a shock and then lost her consciousness. Defence sources said she is likely to be under observation at the hospital for couple of days.

Joy Mathew, a resident of Air Force Station Road, said: “The woman officer suffered a few bruises on her hands in her effort to save herself from the tree branch. But the efforts taken by the Air Force rescue team saved her and the victim was rushed to hospital in 5 minutes,” he said.

A first for IAF: Fired from fighter jet, anti-ship missile hits bullseye

The Indian Air Force launched an anti-ship Harpoon missile from a fighter plane for the first time at a pre-designated target in the Arabian Sea last week. The missile, built by US defence giant Boeing, was launched on May 22 from a Jaguar maritime strike fighter that flew 200 nautical miles off the west coast to carry out the mission, a source said.

The fighter belonged to the IAF’s maritime strike squadron based at the Lohegaon airbase outside Pune. The Jaguar was refuelled midair during the mission, the source added.

An official confirmed it was the “first live firing” of the Harpoon from a warplane in India after integration by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. “It was successful,” he added.

With a range of 124 km, the Harpoon is capable of land-strike missions too.

The navy tested the Harpoon last year when a Boeing P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance aircraft launched the subsonic missile to take out a ‘target’ in the Bay of Bengal.

IMHO, Tejas MK1 are more modern than Upgraded MIR-2000, Comparing them to MIG-21+++ is futile ..

But again for the knowledge, Here a fruitless comparison =========== >>

Full Glass Cockpit: No (1HUD+1MFD+limited HOTAS+HMCS)
LCA: Yes (3MFD, HUD, full HOTAS, Helmet Mounted Display - better than cueing sight)

LCA -far more modern ejection seat, the Martin Baker Mk16 as compared to that on the Bison which is the KM-1M, one that is unchanged from the Bis.

Radar: Bison - Kopyo (range limited to 57Km for 5SqMtr, limited scan angles thanks to Bison nose)
LCA: Hybrid MMR - 100 plus Km for a 5 sq meter target, wide variety of modes, scan angles of the order of 60 degrees

EW suite: Bison - Tarang MK1, external jammer which if carried, reduces number of pylons (already limited to 5, by 1)
LCA: Integrated internal suite, with both RWR & jamming capability

Litening pod for the LCA; not on the Bison

Propulsion: LCA - modern more reliable powerplant with FADEC
Bison: Older gen powerplant, no FADEC, issues with reliability and maintenance

LCA: FBW for carefree handling and pilot friendlyness; has FBW dictate maneuvering limits with loads, stores, and other criteria preventing errors
Bison: No

LCA: Special measures for reduced signature in design itself - canopy, airframe, use of specific materials, Y shaped intakes displaced for signature reduction
Bison: Original MiG-21 design, only RAM possible, comes with weight penalty, important as weapons add radar signature

LCA: Able to carry dedicated LDP/Special store on dedicated pylon
Bison: No

LCA: Has 7+1 pylons per design
Bison: 4+1, limiting flexibility

Payload: Edge to LCA even using 6400 Kg empty aircraft weight (~900 kg over original 5.5T) and 10.5T, empty weight with 2R73E missiles included. Has payload of 2.5T for 5 remaining pylons

Growth potential: Edge to LCA - items such as Oxygen generating equipment being included, plus In Flight Refuelling

Stores flexibility: LCA has 1760 standard avionics fit allowing for western, Indian, Russian weapons
Bison: No

Avionics: LCA has provision for datalink, has modern avionics, computers etc
Bison: Limited upgrade, few of these are included in current aircraft

Systems: LCA designed around test kits, with simulators for crew
Bison: Limited by original MiG-21 design, only part task training

Combat Radius : Tejas +500Kms, Bision limited to under 300kms ..

---

With 7 pylons and more fuel capability + even disregarding IFR on the way, its a joke to say LCA == MiG-21 as some folks have been pushing on ..

I believe both Mig 21 bison and LCA can fire BVR's , could you please clarify on it, also how good is the weapons delivery package of LCA viz a vis Mig 21.

i had a verbal fight with a guy over the specs of both these fighters and his claim is that LCA is just another Mig21 and the fact that both of them fire BVR's further proves his point. since then i decided to not entertain such nincompoops who claim Horse poop has Kheer and Gold as Iron.

.

The MiG 21 Bison fires BVR Missiles, But till The LCA didn't fired any BVR. it's belived that Derby will be integrated and fired from Tejas before the FOC.

both of them fires the Heat seeking missiles using bore sight.

If we compare the LCA with 1960 plane MiG 21, the newest plane wins every aspects, But new generation means new Tech New Threats. But LCA is a good Fighter when in 1990's for his capabilities.

Means LCA is 30 years of advance tech than MiG 21 Bison.
