#IAF finalising norms for 114 jets

.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is close to finalising the technical parameters for the 114 fighter aircraft tender in process and the case is expected to be put before the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in June. “The Air Staff Quality Requirements (ASQR) are being finalised by the Air Force Headquarters. After that the file would be sent to the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) within two months for formulating within the Service Capital Acquisition Plans,” a defence official said.

However, the next meeting of the DAC is scheduled only in June after the elections, the official said and added, “We will put it up before the DAC then for getting the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN).”After the AoN is granted, the IAF will issue the detailed Request For Proposal (RFP) to the vendors based on the ASQRs.

Last April the IAF had issued the Request For Information (RFI) which states that the government plans to buy 114 fighters jets, of which 85% will have to be built in India under the Make in India programme in partnership with a “Strategic Partner/Indian Production Agency.”

The procurement will be processed through the Strategic Partnership (SP) model of the Defence Procurement Procedure under which the selected global company has to tie up with an Indian private partner and build the jets locally under transfer of technology.

Seven global companies responded to the tender of which two are single engine jets and others are twin engine fighters.

After Successful Balakot airstrikes, DRDO offers Netra AEW&C on a new platform Published April 3, 2019 | By admin SOURCE: RAUNAK KUNDE / NEWS BEAT / IDRW.ORG The Netra airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft flying well within inside Indian Airspace was the operational brain that guided Indian Air Force’s 12 Mirage 2000-5 fighter jet which was used to bomb multiple camps operated by the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed in Balakot and in other areas. Operational success and continues use of Netra AEW&C for providing surveillance and radar coverage in the area has improved image of the aircraft among Top brass of IAF who always favored bigger AWACS platform with longer radar coverage and platform range that DRDO is now planning to offer upgraded Netra AEW&C Radar package on new platform to IAF. While DRDO is working on Bigger ” AWACS INDIA ” program which will use a bigger platform like Airbus A-330 wide-body jets, DRDO has approached IAF and has offered upgraded Netra AEW&C Radar package which can be mounted on an Airbus C295 tactical air-lifter which now will be manufactured by Airbus-Tata locally in India soon. Airbus C295 Netra on offer to IAF by DRDO will have same Two radiating planar arrays assembled back-to-back and mounted on top of the fuselage in an active antenna array unit (AAAU) will provide 240° coverage but with improved capabilities, Airbus also has an Airborne Early Warning version of C295 which has a static radar dome to provide a 360 Degrees coverage which DRDO is also ready to offer as a by-product of AWACS INDIA if IAF wants it aircraft in this package. DRDO already has started testing static radar dome mounted on top of a building to test new radar developed for the AWACS INDIA program. India is yet to ink a deal for procurement of Airbus A-330 wide-body jets due to high procurement cost due to which the whole program is not likely to materialize before 2025 due to which upgraded Airbus C295 Netra has been offered to IAF as an interim solution after spectacular performance in Balakot airstrikes. IAF’s long-pending quest to induct two more AWACS based on Israeli Phalcon early-warning radar systems mounted on Russian Ilyushin-76 too has been pending due to the increased price quoted both by Israel and Russia which has forced IAF to solely depend on 3 Phalcon AWACS procured earlier. Second Netra aircraft is yet to be inducted into IAF due to changes and improvements asked by IAF. DRDO also plans to offer an Airbus C295 variant for Maritime Patrol and Anti-Submarine Warfare missions to Indian Navy. Two Netra AEW&C developed by DRDO are mounted on Embraer ERJ 145 platforms procured from Brazilian Embraer Aerospace company and third Netra AEW&C will be retained by DRDO for development of AWACS INDIA and further upgrades to the Netra AEW&C Radar package.

Why sell? We need it in the field. At least till the 2 Phalcons arrive.

IAF did not welcome Netra in their Ops with open arms and even though the DRDO themselves set to work on 3 prototypes IAF took only 2 and that too after a lot of Tamasha.... I am sure post Balakot they must be repenting. However no harm done as the 3 Netra is still with DRDO who is using it as a testbed for fine tuning and AWACS -INDIA project

Why sell? We need it in the field. At least till the 2 Phalcons arrive.

Not quite true. It is a common consensus that IAF is indeed under-equipped for a two front war.

It is not anything new that MoD is the primary roadblock to our defence preparedness. Just see what happens with most procurement processes. The Mirage2000 denied again and again and then after over a decade even MMRCA did not come through. Every process gets mired in bureaucracy at MoD. It is Parrikar who actually helped improve the situation. I find barely any improvement since then. Seetharaman is more a DefMin for optics.
One must understand that all countries are under-equipped for any major war. The reason is that if any country starts mass manufacturing weapons, it will be considered as aggression and alarming which may result in panic reaction by others. To keep things cool, no nation keeps enough equipments to attack decisively. Even USA which appears to have large amount of equipments actually are not having to their potential but only to compensate for them being far away from population hubs of the world

Used in Balakot airstrike, Spice Bombs & Litening pods being made in India

In the spotlight after the path breaking Indian airstrike on the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror camp at Balakot in Pakistan on February 26, the Spice smart bomb fired with telling effect from Mirage-2000 fighters, and the Litening precision targeting pods which enabled the hits are being made in India.

Yuval Miller, Executive Vice-President of Rafael, the Israeli Original Equipment Manufacturer of these munitions and targeting systems, told SP Guide in an exclusive interview, at the recently concluded Aero India 2019, that the second lot of Spice bombs recently supplied to the Indian Air Force were produced by the Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS) joint venture at Hyderabad.

Getting in line with the Make in India policy, Rafael is considering producing its entire range of weaponry in India at this JV. It is offering in response to an Indian RFI, the long-range glide bomb "with almost 100 per cent Indian content", and Rocks, the extended range version of Spice, capable of being fired at moving or fixed, highly fortified targets "hundreds of kilometres" away, Miller disclosed. "There are strong requirements in the arena that is evolving here," Miller said prophetically, a few days before India launched the Balakot airstrike. "There's always better (enemy) air defence. IAF is trying to find the right solutions for those challenges," he added.

The Litening pod is also being made substantially in India with another Rafael partner, Defsys. Almost the entire IAF fighter fleet is expected to be fitted with Litening pods.

Rafael is also supplying software designed radios for the "entire airborne network" of the IAF. "The state-of-the-art radio systems are being produced in India." Miller said, referring to the Astra Rafael Comsys (ARC) joint venture, which was given a cheque of $30 million at Aero India in fulfillment of offsets obligations for the radio contract. This JV will also bid for further orders by the IAF, and a separate procurement for the Indian Army.

The Israeli company has still not given up hope on selling the Spike anti-tank guided missile to the Army, Miller said.

Quite possible as An-32 is to be replaced as well. But i think this MTA ship has sailed. India has plenty US$ now and wants to buy the best.

Hjt36 is back
I hv remembered....many defense journous had said....its dead
It comes then goes down

Then comes back and goes down again

While the Airforce suffers

They have tied the IAF like no one else can do and then HAL complain that IAF don't support indigenous products.

IAF has already bought Hawk. HAL is now offering Sport based on LCA trainer.
IAF may buy HJT36 if it passes tests. It will be much cheaper than Hawk and will supplement Hawk in training.
