Can't India make bombs or Laser guidance on its own? These are primitive technology. Also, it is easily possible to reverse engineer these things after acquiring even 1 of them. India had got some of the laser guided bombs in 1999 Kargil war itself and had about 20 years time to reverse engineer.

India had developed Sudarshan bombs which was laser guided. Why is it not used??

We can, but the present stock of ordnances are abysmally low. Which is why we are seeing a flurry of buying sprees to replenish everything from tank and artillery ammo to these bombs.

OFBs need to privatised or operated under PPP to make them efficient and capable of meeting the needs of the Armed Forces. We have the technology, but manufacturing infrastructure and lackadaisical attitude is killing us.

Indian Air Force to upgrade Jaguar planes with Rs 5,000 crore firepower

The IAF has five squadrons of Jaguar aircraft, which have to be maintained by equipping them with new engines from American firm Honeywell to maintain the present force-levels.

A +A -

In a bid to maintain force levels and enhance firepower, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is pushing its plans to upgrade the capabilities of the Jaguar deep penetration strike aircraft by equipping them with new engines under a deal worth over Rs 5,000 crore, which has been stuck for more than six years now.

The deal would be crucial for the IAF to maintain its standards in the coming decade as the squadron strength would be going down due to indecision by the UPA from 2004-2014 in procuring any fighter plane for the service.

The IAF's sanctioned strength of fighter aircraft squadrons is 42, but it has been operating at a much lower strength due to delays in acquisition of replacements for MiG 21s and delays in deciding on the new fleet of multirole combat aircraft.

It has 32 squadrons at present. The IAF has five squadrons of Jaguar planes, which have to be maintained by equipping them with new engines from American firm Honeywell to maintain the present force-levels.

"The stuck project is being revived and pushed by the Air Force. A number of sticky issues with Honeywell have been sorted out and it is expected that there will be some movement forward in the deal in the coming times," a senior government official said.

As per the programme, the Indian Air Force will re-engine around 100 of its Jaguar planes deployed in Jamnagar, Gorakhpur and Ambala with Honeywell power plants.

The Jaguars are currently powered by Rolls-Royce Adour 804/811 engines which are to be replaced with Honeywell's F-125N engine. The new engines are supposed to provide almost 1.5 times the power the existing engines provide to the aircraft.

On December 19, 2011, the UPA government had stated in the Parliament that the Jaguar upgrade would be completed by December 2017, but that deadline expired on Sunday and still, no decision could be taken on the issue.

IAF officials said though the planes are almost three decades old, but there is still plenty of life left in them and they will help India maintain force levels in critical times.

As per IAF projections, it would have air superior Su-30MKI as its main work horse in the coming years. The Force will have 13 squadrons of these planes while it would be retiring its MiG 21s and Mig 27s in the next few years.

"If upgraded and re-engined, the Jaguar can serve as a potent fighter while the government can go on deciding on new aircraft to be procured for the air force," a source said.

Recently, MoS for defence Subhash Bhamre said in the Parliament, "The IAF will have 32 fighter squadrons and 39 helicopter units by 2020." The Air Force currently possesses 32 squadrons but, as the minister put it, "Three squadrons of MiG-21 aircraft will be phased out by 2020."

Because the development wasn't successful, it reportedly had rolling issues and might be cancelled, with the aim on a new PGM kit with additional laser seeker, comparable to LJDAM, rather than a standard LGB.
However, the order for Russian bombs could be for Mig 29 upgrades and TV guided KAB 500s.

Who told that? The tests were successful for range of 9km even with the roll. This was in 2010. Development had begun for a 50km range bomb by removing roll.

How do you think India made SAAW bombs? Or Garuthmaa? Don't give bogus theories

Only last year modi government wasted 3 billion USD in emergency ammunition purchase :frusty:. Now we r paying almost 1 million USD to ruskies for single PGM bomb . What happened to joint development of barak missile?. Seems like another riff off by Israelis. Israel is using india's money to develop missile system. Then they selling the same missile to india :rotfl:. Sad news is non of these weapons will be used against adversaries. These weapons will rot in some army godowns. While soldiers continue to die

Barak misisle has Israeli seekers. When did it become fully Indian? WHo told that all money is for foreign countries? Why can't you understand that this is the money sanctioned and some part will be paid to BEL and some to Israel.

Also, the 3 billion dollars weren't on ammunition but on spare parts for tanks, additional T90 tanks, Heron drones and some ATGM and MRBL. Many of these are worthy purchases, not low end purchases

Joint development is for LRSAM / MRSAM also known as barak-8. This contract is for barak-1 (Short Range) for indian navy.

Raksha Mantri clears two procurement proposals

Raksha Mantri Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman cleared two procurement proposals here today.

The first proposal is related to procurement of 240 bombs, at a cost of Rs. 1254 cr. These bombs, which fall under the category of Precision Guided Munitions, are used by Indian Air Force (IAF). This procurement will address the deficiency of Precision Guided Munitions in the IAF arsenal, besides enhancing the offensive capabilities of the IAF.

A total of three tests with different release conditions and ranges were conducted and all were successful. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated the DRDO scientists and IAF for the successful tests.

There are two variants of the guided bombs-Garuthmaa (winged version with range upto 100 kms) and the Garudaa (non winged with range of 30 kms to scalable upto 100 kms). The latter also has on board navigation and guidance systems.

S Christopher, chairman of DRDO, said SAAW will soon be inducted into the armed forces. The SAAW
project was sanctioned in September 2013. In May last year, the DRDO conducted the weapon's first test from
an IAF Jaguar aircraft in Bengaluru. The second test was conducted from a Su-30MKI fighter in December
last year.

SAAW has been described as a 120 kg smart weapon, which is capable of engaging targets with highprecision up to a range of 100 km. The long-range will allow the IAF to easily hit targets across the border without putting the pilot and aircraft at risk. It can be integrated into the varied types of fighter jets with the IAF. The weapon can be used to destroy bunkers, runways, aircraft hangers and other reinforced structures.

DRDO's Garuda non-winged glide-bomb test was carried out to evaluate its precision for a range of 30 kilometres in August 2016

Man you really have no clue of what you are talking. Removing roll?
The extended range kits are different developments and have nothing to do with Sudarshan LGB.

Sudarshan LGBs were in for further development for accuracy improvement and increased range in 2013 itself. So, I was asking. The accuracy improvement was the roll removal part
