Planning to buy 12 units of S400 systems. If the contract is signed during this visit of defence minister to Russia, first shipment may come as early as 2017.

Even the Russians don't have the S500 yet it's going to take ar least another 15 years before export of an S500 system will be considered.

Discussions for Purchase of Ten systems initiated, also possible off the shelf buy of 60-65 Sukhoi T 50 in the works! Exciting times of Indian defence planners nowadays with he NAMO-Parrikar combine in office.
India is now finalizing the procurement of ten S-400 systems, which can destroy hostile aircraft, stealth fighters, missiles and drones at ranges up to 400-km, in what will be a game-changing acquisition. Though the cost of the government-to-government deal will be decided through negotiations, it will be upwards of $5 billion, making it one of the largest-ever arms contract to be inked with Russia.
But Russia is still to address India's technical and price concerns over the fifth-generation fighter project, which envisages IAF inducting the Sukhoi T-50 (PAK-FA) jets. Under the original plan, 127 of these fighters were to be built in India for over $25 billion. But India is now also examining the possibility of directly buying 60-65 Sukhoi T-50s since the co-production plan has been hit by long delays.

But didn't Modi say no more fighters to be bought? He wants India to manufacture their own.
Operational realities often make politicians reconsider their statements, this may be such a case.
I do not forsee HAL being able to close the LCA order before 2025 let alone start building FGFA . Simply put if we want a 5th gen platform we have no choice as of now.

each system has 8 battalions correct?
so this would mean 80 battalions with up to 720 launchers and around 3500 missiles deployed, adequate for our needs i'd think.

so 480 launchers and around 2000 missiles deployed?
still enough for both our land frontiers at least.
It depends on what package India will choose as a system.
There are 6 possible options:
1 - Full Regimental Complect - 4 Battalions 4 Batteries (4 TELs + 4TLV) each.
2 - Shortened Regimental Complect - 2 Battalions 4 Batteries each;
3 - Shortened Regimental Complect - 2 Battalions 2 Batteries each;
4 - Shortened Regimental Complect - 4 Battalions 2 Batteries each;
5 - Full Battalion Complect;
6 - Shortened Battalion Complect.

The short answer to that would be Yes!
However I'd say our operational doctrine would evolve around taking out the NASR launchers before they got within launching range, it's pretty simple actually.
1)Use BRAHMOS/PRAHAAR/NIRBHAY to take out Pakistani SAM and fixed command and control/ communication/ radar assets
2)impose no fly zone using S400
3)Use LCH/AH-64 SU-30 strike packages along with Jaguar to create forward interdiction and strike for any OPFOR asset traveling towards our forces say around 150km in front of our advancing columns.
4)Wait for a TEL to show and hit it with a SMERCH barrage or any of the aircraft aforementioned.

India seals Rs 70,000 cr missile deal with Russia

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) In what could easily be said the biggest ever defence deal with Russia, India has stitched a contract to acquire S-400 anti-ballistic missile systems from Moscow at a cost of around Rs 70,000 crores, top sources in the Defence Ministry said here today.
The modalities, including the price of deal and number of systems to be acquired, were agreed upon in the meeting of India-Russia Inter Governmental Commission on Military-Technical-Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC) which concluded today in Moscow, with Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar co-chairing it jointly with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu.
The mega deal, along with an agreement to get another nuclear submarine, is likely to be formally signed during the visit to Russia of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who would be travelling to Moscow sometime in December for an annual summit with President Vladimir Putin, the sources told UNI.
