  • Embargo on imports is planned to be progressively implemented between 2020 to 2024: Rajnath Singh
  • India is now ready for the big push to the atma nirbhar or self-dependent initiative announced by PM Modi
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that India is now ready for the big push to the atma nirbhar or self-dependent initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier his office tweeted that he will make an important announcement at 10 am today. “Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh will make an important announcement at 10.00 am today," RMO India tweeted. This comes a day after senior military commanders from India and China held talks on reducing tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh

The list of 101 embargoed items comprises of not just simple parts but also some high tech weapon systems like artillery guns, assault rifles, corvettes, sonar systems, transport aircraft, LCHs, radars & many other items to fulfil needs of our Defence Services.
-Embargo on imports is planned to be progressively implemented between 2020 to 2024. Our aim is to apprise the Indian defence industry about the anticipated requirements of the Armed Forces so that they are better prepared to realise the goal of indigenisation: Defence Minister
-Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a clarion call for a self-reliant India based on the 5 pillars Economy, Infrastructure, System, Demography & Demand and announced a special economic package for Self-Reliant India named ‘Atamnirbhar Bharat’.

Taking cue from that evocation, the Ministry of Defence has prepared a list of 101 items for which there would be an embargo on the import beyond the timeline indicated against them. This is a big step towards self-reliance in defence.
-Ministry of Defence (MoD) is now ready for a big push to Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. MoD will introduce import embargo on 101 items beyond given timeline to boost indigenisation of defence production.

So what happens to sig saur rifles and 7.62*51 rifles which are to be procured? Does it means that IA will only have to buy ofb made rifles or the foreign companies can enter into JV and then will be able sell it to IA?

The list has a catch everything to be implemented by 2024.

They will probably make a lot of purchases before that.

It seems local production of foreign designs are still considered. Because we have examples like these.

3.Tracked Self Propelled (SP) Gun (155mm x 52 Cal)
4.Towed Artillery Gun (155mm x 52 Cal)
73.Assault Rifle 7.62 x 39mm
14.155mm/39 Cal Ultra-Light Howitzer
etc

Here you go !!

Some of us were super exited with the emergency purchases and thought that the flood gates are now open for them to earn some commissions ...

They under estimated the current governments [ I am no spokespersons for current government ] resolve for domestic development and production for armaments and ammunition ...

Very good decision indeed ... I would like to congratulate the government for this decision. It will help the nation in becoming self reliance ...

This decision must be supplemented by very strong accountability for all Defense research organizations. Government must think about my following suggestions.
  1. Do not allow changes to requirements {GSQRs] once they are agreed with research institutes.
  2. Better project management framework for all defense R & D initiatives.
  3. Modernization of OFBs is a must, they cannot simply provide high quality with 50 years old machines.
  4. Bring into Quality Assurance [QA] thinking in production. Think of 6 sigma tools and management.
  5. Ban all strikes at Ordinance Factories and units involved in weapons and ammunition productions... It is a service to nation not any other public sector institutes ...
  6. Bring in person with military service background to lead the OFBs.

local production of foreign designs
That's their workaround for this embargo
Foreign equipment manufactured in India is still foreign equipment. Yes, it's better than off the shelf, but we can do better.
We should be supporting maximum R&D and Indian OEMs.

Yes, there is NO need to take designs like humvee type vehicles or wheeled ICVs for examples. There are several armored vehicles trialing, trialed, etc.

This list is mostly to reign in MOD babus and armed forces to fall in line and acquire local products.

Otherwise, these 2 groups for various reasons would be clamoring for imported items,
Now with this embargo, they will have no reason to even look outside, which limits the damage these 2 two groups have been doing for decades.

Mostly spared along with the Carbines; could pave way signing of CAR 816 deal. IMO,

Item 2 (7.62x51 Sniper) for SVD replacement; contenders are SSS defense Viper and that OFB bolt action abomination.

Item 73 (7.62x39 AR) category already allocated for AK 203 & OFB clones.
