The trade deficit is due to India mainly exporting raw materials to China while importing computing and chemical goods of high complexity.

Presumably, those goods are imported from China because of cost. India cannot be without those goods as they are necessary for India's service, medical, and chemical industries, not to mention consumer goods for improved quality of life.

Buying the goods from other countries (more expensive) will hurt the Indian economy and the Chinese economy. Buying from China will help the Chinese economy but also help the Indian economy.

However, exports to India only make up 2.43% of China's total exports while making up 17.9% of India's total imports. Reducing trade with China to the point of ending the trade deficit will likely hurt India more than it hurts China.

India should focus on scaling up manufacturing of products of increasingly higher complexity, and slowly phase in imports from other countries to replace China as the Indian economy grows. More and more products should be produced domestically instead of imported from China, but moving up the complexity chain takes time. It won't happen immediately, border dispute or not. The GOI is taking steps in that regard, but results won't be immediate.

The abrupt lowering of Chinese exports that some on this forum want, however, will be counterproductive and weaken India relative to China.

true . similar thing going on in AP now . when we lose valleys there we can ask same thing again.

no roads to LAC at some places while chinese can come in vehicles . about 30 or so border outposts are supposed to be build - sanctioned in 2020 . dont think anything has happened since then .
